CHSR and The Capital Complex Present: The CHSR Sessions with Tony Dekker of the Great Lake Swimmers recorded at Wilser's Room in Fredericton, NB on March 12, 2009
City Sonic: Tony Dekker (Great Lake Swimmers) at Spadina Subway Station
Director: Anita Doron, 2009 Songwriter Tony Dekker was new in town and stuck commuting to a day job several subway stops from his home on the Bloor line a routine that seemed to keep him underground day in and day out. So the singer/guitarist, who records haunting folk music under the name Great Lake Swimmers, penned I Will Never the See the Sun, an ode to his daily ride along Spadina, St. George, Bay and Yonge. Soon after his music career took off, and Tony began using more rural environments all across Ontario for writing inspiration and recording spaces. Now, through the wonder of graphic novel-style animation, we follow him back beneath the streets at Spadina subway station to experience the urban sounds of the TTC that were his first connection to our citys sonics. Your Rocky Spine - Tony Dekker @ The Capital Bar
I was lost in the lakes And the shapes that your body makes That your body makes, that your body makes That your body makes The mountains said I could find you here They whispered the snow and the leaves in my ear I traced my finger along your trails Your body was the map, I was lost in it Floating over your rocky spine The glaciers made you, and now you're mine Floating over your rocky spine The glaciers made you, and now you're mine I was moving across your frozen veneer The sky was dark but you were clear Could you feel my footsteps And would you shatter, would you shatter, would you And with your soft fingers between my claws Like purity against resolve I could tell, then and there, that we were formed from the clay And came from the rocks for the earth to display They told me to be careful up there Where the wind blows a venomous rage through your hair They told me to be careful up there Where the wind rages through your hair

Jenny Omnichord - Do You Know Karate Ft. Tony Dekker
"Jenny Omnichord" is a solo side-project of 23 year-old Jenny Mitchell, vocalist, song-writer and multi-instrumentalist for Guelph, Ontarios noted young indie band The Barmitzvah Brothers. In fact, it was the purchase of an omnichord in Jennys fathers thrift store 8 years ago that set her along this path, its carnivalesque, slightly Hebraic sounds leading two young gentile girls to pick the somewhat ironic "Barmitzvah Brothers" as the name for their band. And while Jenny subsequently branched off into other instruments, among them bass and electric guitars, trumpet, banjo, and keyboards, it is the omnichord that has always remained her first love, a slightly geeky invention played by almost no one, capable of a myriad of sounds and effects, and for some reason scorned or unknown or ignored for almost all of its life. Well, now, it is time for the omnichord to take its rightful position among the upper echelons of musical instruments, and Jenny shall be the liberator who shall set it free, the vessel through whom this most intricate of the keys shall finally achieve the appreciation and respect that it so richly deserves. Or not. Come what may, Jenny will still continue to love and play it, will try to learn even more of its many and hidden secrets, and will keep trying to bring its joyful wonders to the world, whether we are ready or not. So be prepared to smile, to be amazed and to be bewildered. The omnichord is coming, and we will all be the better for it. To order the ...
Catcher Song ~ Great Lake Swimmers -- Ongiara
Great Lake Swimmers is a Canadian band built around the melodic folk rock songs of singer-songwriter Tony Dekker. Originally from Wainfleet, Ontario, the band is currently based in Toronto. The current touring line-up includes Tony Dekker on lead vocals, acoustic guitar and harmonica, Erik Arnesen on banjo, electric guitar and harmonium, Greg Millson on drums, Bret Higgins on upright bass and Miranda Mulholland on violin and backing vocals. "Music is interesting because it brings people together, and the more that I do this the more I realize the importance to that." ~ Tony Dekker, Great Lake Swimmers Catcher Song (by Tony Dekker) Well the ropes are taut, And the stories have all been caught. There's a frost-cover drawn on the shore, And the catcher still seems to want more. Through the reel and through the unreal, It's not what you see but what you feel, And what transpires here, And what I hear transpires. And it falls, falls, falls. And it falls, falls, falls. It rises up, it rises up. And it falls, falls, falls. I just want to break even. I just want to pass on through, Like a ghost through a household tune, Under light of the early dusk hues. Navigating and dealing extremes Is not what at first it seems; But I keep my ship tight and true, For the next time that I will see you. And it falls, falls, falls. And it falls, falls, falls. It rises up, it rises up.
Great Lake Swimmers - "Pulling On A Line": SXSW 2012 Showcasing Artist
Great Lake Swimmers is a Canadian indie folk band which formed in 2003 in Wainfleet, Ontario, Canada. The band began with Tony Dekker (vocals, guitar, harmonica), Erik Arneson (banjo, guitar, harmonium), Bret Higgens (bass), Julie Fader (keyboards, vocals) and Greg Millson (drums). Julie Fader subsequently left, and Miranda Mulholland, on violin and backing vocals, joined. Fifty-five years ago, Marilyn Bell took a plunge and traversed Lake Ontario. Back then, being a Great Lake swimmer was a big deal; now, it's an astonishing physical feat taken for granted. It's a rapidly forgotten part of history, like a faded map or a tattered photograph. Or a lost channel. Tony Dekker's Great Lake Swimmers have spent the past seven years performing on stages around the world - though, like Bell, they should never be taken for granted. LOST CHANNELS, their fourth album set for release on March 31st, finds them once again recording at historic locations. This time in the Thousand Islands region of Ontario and New York state, telling tales of hidden histories, still "mining for light in the dark wells," still "tuned to an instrument of greater and unknown design." The instrument in question is the singular voice of Tony Dekker, a voice that summons ghosts from times past.

Its a voice that is capable of conveying heartache and comfort all in the space of a single phrase. Though his supporting cast has changed over the years—with the exception of longtime right-hand man Erik Arnesen — Dekker has always encircled him self with sympathetic players who value spacious arrangements that frame his vocals. Over time, the band has evolved from a sparse, delicate and hushed unit into a well-rounded folk rock band, sacrificing none of their original intimacy while upping both the volume and tempos when necessary. LOST CHANNELS also features the talents of Julie Fader (flute/backing vocals), Greg Millson (drums), Darcy Yates (bass), with appearances by Erin Aurich on violin; Mike Olsen on cello; and Paul Aucoin on vibraphone; along with special guests / Swimmers collaborators Serena Ryder with vocals on Everything Is Moving So Fast and Bob Egan on pedal steel. Music composed and performed by Tony Dekker and Great Lake Swimmers. My last book of photography of the 1000 Islands had to be the very best, both in content and quality. Lost Channels is nominated for the prestigious Polaris Music Prize: www.polarismusicprize.ca --- When Great Lake Swimmers Tony Dekker wrote the song Everything is Moving So Fast, he couldnt have predicted that it would foreshadow the rapid success of the Toronto bands fourth album, LOST CHANNELS. For a project that has seen a slow upward trajectory since its humble beginnings in 2001, the Great Lake Swimmers are suddenly getting exponentially more attention across North America and Europe, entrancing newcomers to the band with Dekkers unforgettable voice and compelling songwriting. That LOST CHANNELS was a success in Canada is no surprise: Great Lake Swimmers have long been a word-of-mouth favourite for whom critical mass was inevitable, and they are regarded as a national treasure by the countrys public broadcaster, the CBC; LOST CHANNELS recently topped the chart on CBC Radio 3 (which is also broadcast in the US on Sirius Satellite Radio). #181 Great Lake Swimmers - moving pictures silent films
Tout est très simple. Les coulisses du Glaz'art quelques heures avant le concert. Un peu de bruit. On se réfugie dans cette grande pièce. Avec juste un vieux canapé. On attend.

Cute kittens in the wild
These cats were born and raised in the wild on the streets of Nijmegen (NL). I discovered them in their presumably sixth week and took care of them since then. The mother and two of their kittens now live at our place, the other three were brought to the animal shelter where they were in good care before they found a good home.
