JRR Tolkien on Film
There are two clips here spliced together of JRR Tolkien talking on film. In the first from 1968, he talks about "The Lord of the Rings" books and gives some detail about where some of the ideas for characters came from in ancient stories. In the second (date unknown) he mentions the first time he ever wrote down the idea for "The Hobbit". The picture is better in the first clip--the audio is better in the second. Both clips are of very poor quality however. Tolkien was a member of the Inklings, a literary group of friends and writers associated with Oxford University and of which CS Lewis was the principal member. Tolkien and Dyson together were instrumental in introducing Lewis to Christianity.

JRR Tolkien reciting "Namárië"
This is a rare recording of JRR Tolkien from 1952, in which he recites the Quenya poem "Namárië", famously sung by Galadriel in the chapter "Farewell to Lórien" in "The Lord of the Rings". "Ai! laurië lantar lassi súrinen, yéni únótimë ve rámar aldaron! Yéni ve lintë yuldar avánier mi oromardi lisse-miruvóreva Andúnë pella , Vardo tellumar nu luini yassen tintilar i eleni ómaryo airetári -lírinen. Sí man i yulma nin enquantuva? The long years have passed like swift draughts of the sweet mead in lofty halls beyond the West, beneath the blue vaults of Varda wherein the stars tremble in the voice of her song, holy and queenly. Who now shall refill the cup for me? For now the Kindler, Varda, the Queen of the stars, from Mount Everwhite has uplifted her hands like clouds and all paths are drowned deep in shadow; and out of a grey country darkness lies on the foaming waves between us, and mist covers the jewels of Calacirya for ever. Now lost, lost to those of the East is Valimar! Farewell! Maybe thou shalt find Valimar! Maybe even thou shalt find it! Farewell!" Brought to you by www.chamber-of-records.com
The Tolkien Ensemble - Song of Durin
´These are not holes,´said Gimli. ´This is the great realm and city of the Dwarrowdelf. And of old it was not darksome, but full of light and splenour, as is still remembered in our songs.´ He rose and standing in the dark he began to chant in a deep voice, while the echoes ran away into the roof. The world was young, the mountains green, No stain yet on the Moon was seen, No words were laid on stream or stone When Durin woke and walked alone. He named the nameless hills and dells; He drank from yet untasted wells; He stooped and looked in Mirrormere, And saw a crown of stars appear, As gems upon a silver thread, Above the shadows of his head. The world was fair, the mountains tall, In Elder Days before the fall Of mighty kings in Nargothrond And Gondolin, who now beyond The Western Seas have passed away: The world was fair in Durin's Day. A king he was on carven throne In many-pillared halls of stone With golden roof and silver floor, And runes of power upon the door. The light of sun and star and moon In shining lamps of crystal hewn Undimmed by cloud or shade of night There shone for ever fair and bright. There hammer on the anvil smote, There chisel clove, and graver wrote; There forged was blade, and bound was hilt; The delver mined, the mason built. There beryl, pearl, and opal pale, And metal wrought like fishes' mail, Buckler and corslet, axe and sword, And shining spears were laid in hoard. Unwearied then were Durin's folk; Beneath the mountains music woke: The ...

JRR Tolkien recites 'The Hoard'
This is an audio clip where JRR Tolkien recites the poem 'The Hoard', from 'The Adventures of Tom Bombadil'. THE HOARD 'When the moon was new and the sun young of silver and gold the gods sung: in the green grass they silver spilled, and the white waters they with gold filled. Ere the pit was dug or Hell yawned, ere dwarf was bred or dragon spawned, there were Elves of old, and strong spells under green hills in hollow dells they sang as they wrought many fair things, and the bright crowns of the Elf-kings. But their doom fell, and their song waned, by iron hewn and by steel chained. Greed that sang not, nor with mouth smiled, in dark holes their wealth piled, graven silver and carven gold: over Elvenhome the shadow rolled. There was an old dwarf in a dark cave, to silver and gold his fingers clave; with hammer and tongs and anvil-stone he worked his hands to the hard bone. and coins he made, and strings of rings, and thought to buy the power of kings. But his eyes grew dim and his ears dull and the skin yellow on his old skull; through his bony claw with a pale sheen the stony jewels slipped unseen. No feet he heard, though the earth quaked. when the young dragon his thirst slaked. and the stream smoked at his dark door. The flames hissed on the dank floor, and he died alone in the red fire; his bones were ashes in the hot mire. There was an old dragon under grey stone; his red eyes blinked as he lay alone. His joy was dead and his youth spent, he was knobbed and ...

JRR Tolkien sings 'Troll Sat Alone On His Seat Of Stone'
This is a recording of JRR Tolkien singing 'Troll Sat Alone On His Seat Of Stone', the poem recited by Sam Gamgee in 'The Lord of the Rings: Flight to the Ford'. "Troll sat alone on his seat of stone, And munched and mumbled a bare old bone; For many a year he had gnawed it near, For meat was hard to come by. Done by! Gum by! In a cave in the hills he dwelt alone, And meat was hard to come by. Up came Tom with his big boots on. Said he to Troll: 'Pray, what is yon? For it looks like the shin o' my nuncle Tim, As should be a-lyin' in graveyard. Caveyard! Paveyard! This many a year has Tim been gone, And I thought he were lyin' in graveyard.' 'My lad,' said Troll, 'this bone I stole. But what be bones that lie in a hole? Thy nuncle was dead as a lump o' lead, Afore I found his shinbone. Tinbone! Thinbone! He can spare a share for a poor old troll, For he don't need his shinbone.' Said Tom: 'I don't see why the likes o' thee Without axin' leave should go makin' free With the shank or the shin o' my father's kin; So hand the old bone over! Rover! Trover! Though dead he be, it belongs to he; So hand the old bone over!' 'For a couple o' pins,' says Troll, and grins, 'I'll eat thee too, and gnaw thy shins. A bit o' fresh meat will go down sweet! I'll try my teeth on thee now. Hee now! See now! I'm tired o' gnawing old bones and skins; I've a mind to dine on thee now.' But just as he thought his dinner was caught, He found his hands had hold of naught. Before he could mind, Tom ...
