Cleveland Metroparks Tobogganing
This winter, experience the thrill of tobogganing at The Chalet in Mill Stream Run Reservation, located on Valley Parkway between Routes 42 and 82 in Strongsville (a short distance from both I-71 and the Ohio Turnpike). The two 1000-foot refrigerated ice chutes operate with or without snow the day after Thanksgiving through the first weekend in March, weather permitting. In addition to tobogganing, guests can enjoy the facility with a snack bar, two fireplaces, a large-screen television, indoor restrooms, and a main gathering area.

This is a portion of our coverage of the Discraft Great Lakes Open a few years ago (episode 23). The action plays out over the outward nine of this highly regarded disc golf course, located in Kensington Metropark, Milford, MI. This is the lead card, final round. Highlights include Matthew Blakely's huge putt on #3, while the low point is watching David Feldberg break his throwing hand. Ouch. Not that he stopped playing, of course. But the real star of this clip is the fabled Toboggan course. The Toboggan plays host annually to the United States Amateur National Championship, a must-play event for any up and coming disc golf player. Leon Smith (camera), Dale Smith and Graham Stent race down the Val Thorens Toboggan Run - the longest in France. Top speed of 74.6 km/hr reached on a section of piste just before the start line (according to the GPS!). Top to bottom run took 13 minutes.

An excellent way to get down(quickly)from the Great Wall in Beijing,China.We were given some sterling advice by some cool students from UK who were in front of us in the queue: 'Don't pull on the brake...they will tell you to slow down but don't!" Never one to back down on a challenge.... Please forgive the high and girly voice,the speed was immense and all the SLOW DOWN signs did add a minor 'shiting-it' factor to the proceedings. Nearly came off at one point...Legs were still wobbly an hour after! Neither Mickey nor Simon were harmed in the making of this video.Thanks go to Robin for the loan of his driver for the day.

The Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race
The Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race (GNCTR) is an annual event that challenges the creativity of engineering students. The first competition was held in 1974 after being created by Dr. SH Simmonds, president of the Alberta chapter of the American Concrete Institute. In the time since the first competition, GNCTR has grown to include universities and technical schools from across Canada with occasional entries from the United States and Europe. The project involves designing and constructing a toboggan with a metal frame and a running surface made completely out of concrete. The sled must weigh less than 300 pounds (136 kg), have a working braking system, and be fitted with a roll bar to protect its five passengers. Each competing team must complete a technical report summarizing the design, which is presented at a public technical exhibition. Teams are judged for top speed, best run, most improved team, braking, and aesthetics. Each year an award is also given for the best overall entry. It is traditional for teams to choose a theme for their sled; they often wear appropriate costumes and incorporate elements of the design into their technical exhibit and sled aesthetics. This has become a major part of the competition, making up a large part of the spirit award, as well as the best uniforms award. Theme ideas are most often drawn from pop culture or retro references, or based on the team's home university and its location.

This is the first in a 3-part series presented by the PDGA on this year's Amateur National Championship, which takes place June 11th - 13th. This segment takes a look at a few of the key holes at the famed Toboggan course in Kensington Metropark, Milford, MI, where the nation's top amateurs will vie for this coveted title. Presented by Discraft, the USADGC is a PDGA Major event, and since 2002 has been held at this unique course featuring some of mother nature's finest challenges to a disc golf player's skills.
