My father and I travelled to Saipan and Tinian Island in March 2010 to visit the WWII historic sites. This is Part I of our Tinian trip as we travel up to the very historic North Field which in 1945 was the largest and busiest airport in the world. It's best known for the launching of the atomic bombs that hit Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945.

Atomic Bomb Footage: Tinian (1945) - Part 2
Part 2 of this raw, silent footage from Tinian during World War II contains footage of the landing of the B-29 "Enola Gay" after completion of its atomic bomb mission over Hiroshima, and the awarding of the Distinguished Service Cross to its pilot, Colonel Paul Tibbets. It then shows preparation of the "Fat Man" bomb for the second atomic mission over Japan. Source: Naval History and Heritage Command, Photographic Section, UV-1.
Tinian - a small island that helped save the world
Tinian is a small island far out in the pacific about half way between Australia and Guam. It is just a short 7 minute flight south of its sister island Saipan. After invading Saipan we moved on to Tinian where a large base was set up. The Seabees set up the base to resemble Manhattan with all of the roads accordingly. There is even Central Park. They built 2 airfields (North and West Fields). It is from the North Field's Runway Able that the Enola Gay and Bockscar took off loaded with the atomic bombs Little Boy and Fatman respectively, enroute to Japan. On our trip to Tinian we take the short 7 minute flight in several small planes, visit several places including the 2 invasion beaches (White Beaches 1 & 2) which are incredibly small for what you'd imagine and then moved onto the North Field where we visited the bomb pits where the bombs were loaded and then drive down Runway Able The included B&W pics in my video were taken during the war by the military and can be found on Wikipedia. Diving - Saipan & Tinian, Northern Mariana Islands
In early summer of 2008, I went to Saipan, Northern Mariana islands for diving, where is only 3.5 hrs.-flight from Tokyo. Enjoyable & Relaxing diving with warm water ( temperature approx. 28 degree C. ), high water visibility up to 40 m, almost no current and lots of colourful fishes. The dive site " Spotlight " was really fantastic and remarkable !!

Guy Gabaldon fought as a 17 year old Marine in Saipan during WWII and returned in 1980 where he lived for the next 20 years. In 1987 he flew his Dehavilland Beaver to the Atomic Bomb Pits on the island of Tinian.

Tinian Trip Part III
My father and I travelled to Saipan and Tinian Island in March 2010 to visit the WWII historic sites. This is Part III of our Tinian trip as we travel up to the very historic North Field which in 1945 was the largest and busiest airport in the world. It's best known for the launching of the atomic bombs that hit Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945. This video begins with the exact taxi and takeoff path of both the Enola Gay and Bockscar as they left atomic bomb pit #1 with their weapon loaded and taxied southwest to the western end of Runway Able and took off down Runway Able going West to East. The video also shows the path to the foundation of the assembly building where the bombs were assembled.

I took this video from the beach road area of Tinian near the Kammer beach.I'm standing near the area where you can see the wreckage of a WWII battleship.I pan the camera from the shipwreck swinging to the beachroad and on to Kammer beach then slowly tilting downward to the boulders along the beach.Its quite a good spot to take a picture from here cause you promote the beauty and serenity of this island TINIAN.And its History The rusty derelict gives us an impression that this place was once a staging area of the Pacific War.Hence we got the name of the place like `Banzai Cliff' and `Suicide Cliff' unquestionably Saipan and Tinian ,Northern Marianas.
