timbre
What is Timbre?
mitcables.com http twitter.com audioevo.org In music, timbre is what makes one instrument sound different from another, even when they are playing at the same note and volume. Two trumpets, for example, playing the same notes can sound different from one another, and usually do. Timbre is caused by the fact that each note from a musical instrument is a complex tone containing more than one frequency. A sound generated on any instrument produces many modes of vibration occurring simultaneously. The vibration that has the slowest rate is called the fundamental frequency and is the loudest. The other frequencies are either harmonics, overtones, or inharmonics. The fundamental is the frequency at which the entire wave vibrates. We've learned that a musical tone requires three or more harmonics for the ear to identify it. However, a tone with only three harmonics will not produce high quality timbre that is suitable for high end audio playback. In our opinion, high end audio playback requires the fundamental plus as many as seven simple harmonics in order to possess dense timbre. For a maker of high end audio gear, the goal is always to manufacture audio interfaces, components, or loudspeakers, that will affect the natural harmonic structure of the audio to the smallest degree possible-- thus, retaining the music's natural timbre and realism. It's a quest we all share. At MIT, we've spent the past three decades leading the quest to perfect the science of audio interfacing by ...

This is a ten minute discussion intended both for my Online Lessons page and the Science Olympiad page. It deals with overtones/timbre as applied to brass winds. However the simple theory underpinning it applies to all instruments. I only allude to Fourier Synthesis. A link will appear on the Science Olympiad page for further study.

Timbre Russian Accordion Group (Русский тембр)
K.Weil - Mekki-Messer The Timbre Russian Accordion Group was founded in Moscow in the year 1982 by Valeri Somorov. There where five musicians in the Group until today: Paul Zaitsev, Viacheslav Stoma, Aleksej Kochurov, Michail Dmitrokopulo, Viacheslav Kuzminskiy (art.director of the group). In the ensemble are only promovated solists. This is the only professional group in Russia, which plays the unique instruments made by the Russian Engineer Nikolai Kosorukov and called timbre accordions. Those instruments dont have any analogues in the world. Their sound quality resembles closely that of symphonic orchestra wind instruments made of brass or wood. So they were called Oboe, Clarinet, French horn and Tuba. The traditional multitimbral accordion is also used in the Group. Included in the repertoire of the Group are works of Russian and foreign classical compositions, folk songs from all over the world, Jazz and contempory music. At the present the Timbre Russian Accordion Group is the leader of all Russian accordion ensembles. It has made a lot of recordings on the radio and TV. The Group has record many CDs as well. The musicians gave Concerts in many countries of the world: Germany, Switzerland, France, Greece, Finland, Holland, Italy, Portugal and many more. They are also winners of all Russian (Moscow 1985, Tula 1986, Sverdlovsk 1990, Moscow 1997, 2007) and several foreign competitions: Grand Prix International (France 1991), Citta di Castelfidardo (Italy 1991). 19 of ...

THE SINGERS WITH GREATEST LEGATO AND TIMBRE / COLORATION
Sadly most people do not consider these qualities when discussing a voice, instead focusing on range or power. Yet it is these two qualities that make a voice expressive and beautiful. The most powerful and versatile voice is nothing when lacking in legato and timbre, being totally displeasing to the ear. And yet limited voices become heart rendering when endowed with such gifts. Now, some may think me a fool for showcasing these two particular voices to make this point, being they are from such different genres. However, my years of studying great voices in the entire spectrum of music has led me to believe there are none better. I present legendary Italian tenor Enrico Caruso, and revered folk and spiritual bass singer, Paul Robeson. For those who would like a short musical lesson to know what I am talking about, continue reading:) For the already wise, simply listen and enjoy:) In music, timbre is the quality of a musical note or sound that distinguishes different types of sound production, such as voices or musical instruments. The physical characteristics of sound that mediate the perception of timbre include spectrum and envelope. Timbre is also known in psychoacoustics as sound quality or sound color. For example, timbre is what, with a little practice, people use to distinguish the saxophone from the trumpet in a jazz group, even if both instruments are playing notes at the same pitch and amplitude. Timbre has been called "a wastebasket category", or "the ...

Timbre Music Video - I will go plant little flowers
I stumbled across Robert and Josh's videos a few months back and literally spent 2 hours watching everything they'd made, laughing so hard with tetra and a couple friends. I immediately wanted to ask them about making a music video for "I Will Go Plant Little Flowers". I had wanted a video that would be very joyful and playful, and what could be happier than a video made by two 12 year old brittish boys? It doesn't hurt that they're maybe the funniest people on the planet. They write, video, edit, and star in all their films, and they're so wonderfully witty. This song really represents joy to me, and the desire to let people truly know you, to be silly and real and honest and transparent. I love having such a playful video for it! Please go look at Robert and Josh's other films! I love them! www.youtube.com This song is available on iTunes and at timbre.Bandcamp.com facebook.com
