The Timber Story - Homework Assignment.
So for my ASL 122 class we are required to sign a story in ASL -- I am a lumber jack who wears a red shirt, carries an axe, and lunch bag. I chop down 2 trees, then get hungry, drink some coffee, eat a sandwich, and eat an apple. I put my lunch items away and continue on to the next big tree. After attemping to chop it down, it does fall when I yell "timber" . I call the Doctor for help who uses a stethoscope to examine the tree. He finds out the tree is deaf, hence why it is not falling down when I yell timber. I then spell out the word "timber" and the tree falls to the ground.

Michael Gordon's Timber for six 2x4s -- excerpt
Michael Gordon's Timber, is an evening-length tour de force. Scored for six graduated wooden Simantras — percussion instruments devised by French composer Iannis Xenakis. The work brings the physicality, endurance and technique of percussion performance to a new level. In this new work, Gordon shapes the music in both polyrhythmic and dynamic waves of textures — often each players' hands are in separate rhythmic 'worlds', each traversing a different dynamic contour from loud to soft to loud, similar in some respects to his solo for percussion, XY. Much of Gordon's music demonstrates a deep exploration into the extreme possibilities and stunning nature of rhythm, as well as the enriching, yet disturbing, multidimensionality of polyrhythmic layers — what has been termed in his music to be, "glorious confusion." Many of Gordon's works, including Trance, Gotham, Decasia, and his most recent orchestral work, Dystopia, point to Gordon's interest in complex rhythmic and textural territory. Gordon's percussion sextet takes these elements and explores the extreme possibilities of rhythm and texture to a beautifully intense degree. The new hour-long work is indeed a unique and exciting addition to the world of percussion. Timber was co-commissioned by the Dutch dance company, Club Guy and Roni, Slagwerkgroep den Haag, Mantra Percussion, with generous support from the Nief-Norf project.
Sir Snake a Lot - Big Timber Rattlesnake on Kentucky Lake
We had our first on the water encounter with a big rattlesnake on Kentucky Lake. Some boats were beached in a bay and shooting what sounded like a large cannon. Moments later we saw something coming out to our boat. It was so big I thought it was a beaver or a big muskrat. As it got closer we had to start the boat up so he didn't try to get into the splash well. We circled him so we could share. We thought it might be a Diamond Watersnake until he popped his rattles up out of the water when he went into defense posture. According to the Ky Snake Guide he's the most poisonous snake in Kentucky. He was just spooked out of his den by those cannon shots.
