The battle of Thermopylae has a big significance in Greek history. It's the battle that showed the various Greek states that they are members of the same nation and they sparked the idea of a future unification. That unification came with Philip II the king of the Greek kingdom of Macedonia, who united all Greek into one single country. With this unified country, Philip's son, Alexander the Great, vanquished the Persian empire in retaliation for their invasion against Greece and spread the Greek culture all over the ancient world. The battle of Thermopylae was also important cause it showed that the Persians could be beaten and it led to the final Greek victory, which secured the western world and the birth of democracy. Battle of Thermopylae - Last stand of Leonidas & the 300 Spartans
The Battle of Thermopylae ( Greek: Μάχη τῶν Θερμοπυλῶν, Machē tōn Thermopylōn) was fought between an alliance of Greek city-states, led by King Leonidas of Sparta, and the Persian Empire of Xerxes I over the course of three days, during the second Persian invasion of Greece. It took place simultaneously with the naval battle at Artemisium, in August or September 480 BC, at the pass of Thermopylae ('The Hot Gates'). The Persian invasion was a delayed response to the defeat of the first Persian invasion of Greece, which had been ended by the Athenian victory at the Battle of Marathon in 490 BC. Xerxes had amassed a huge army and navy, and set out to conquer all of Greece. The Athenian general Themistocles had proposed that the allied Greeks block the advance of the Persian army at the pass of Thermopylae, and simultaneously block the Persian navy at the Straits of Artemisium. A Greek force of approximately 7000 men marched north to block the pass in the summer of 480 BC. The Persian army, alleged by the ancient sources to have numbered over one million but today considered to have been much smaller (various figures are given by scholars ranging between about 100000 and 300000), arrived at the pass in late August or early September. Vastly outnumbered, the Greeks held off the Persians for seven days in total (including three of battle), before the rear-guard was annihilated in one of history's most famous last stands. During two full days of battle, the small force led by ...

Bill Clinton - Battle of Thermopylae and the passengers on United 93
SHANKSVILLE, United States. Sept. 10 -- The United States on Saturday dedicated a new national memorial to commemorate the victims of United Airlines Flight 93 who were killed after the plane was hijacked in the 9/11 terrorist attacks ten years ago and crashed into fields of Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Former President Clinton makes a touching comparison between the 300 Spartan soldiers at the Battle of Thermopylae, and the heroic passengers on United 93, who overthrew the hijackers and prevented the plane from reaching its intended target in Washington DC ******************************************* There has always been a special place in the common memory for people who deliberately, knowingly, certainly laid down their lives for other people to live. President Bush is from Texas, and I sometimes think because I grew up in Arkansas that's the more important difference between us than our partisan differences. But every child I grew up with was raised on a memory of the Alamo, the defining story of Texas. Why? Because those people knew they were going to die. But the time they bought and the casualties they inflicted in the cause of freedom allowed the whole idea of Texas to survive. And those who live there now to enjoy the life they do. The first such great story I have been able to find that reminds me of all your loved ones, however, occurred almost 2500 years ago. When the Greek king of Sparta facing a massive, massive Persian army took 300 of his finest soldiers to ...

300 - Battle of Thermopylae
300 Summary: Sin City author Frank Miller's sweeping take on the historic Battle of Thermopylae comes to the screen courtesy of Dawn of the Dead director Zack Snyder. Gerard Butler stars as Spartan King Leonidas and Lena Headey plays Queen Gorgo. The massive army of the Persian Empire is sweeping across the globe, crushing every force that dares stand in its path. When a Persian envoy arrives in Sparta offering King Leonidas power over all of Greece if he will only bow to the will of the all powerful Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro), the strong-willed leader assembles a small army comprised of his empire's best fighters and marches off to battle. Though they have virtually no hope of defeating Xerxes' intimidating battalion, Leonidas' men soldier on, intent on letting it be known they will bow to no man but their king. Meanwhile, back in Sparta, the loyal Queen Gorgo attempts to convince both the skeptical council and the devious Theron (Dominic West) to send more troops despite the fact that many view Leonidas' unsanctioned war march as a serious transgression. As Xerxes' fearsome "immortals" draw near, a few noble Greeks vow to assist the Spartans on the battlefield. When King Leonidas and his 300 Spartan warriors fell to the overwhelming Persian army at the Battle of Thermopylae, the fearless actions of the noble fighters inspired all of Greece to stand up against their Persian enemy and wage the battle that would ultimately give birth to the modern concept of democracy.
300-The Battle of Thermopylae
The Battle of Thermopylae(Greek: Θερμοπύλαι), detailed primarily by Herodotus, was fought in August 480 BC,between an alliance of Greek city-states and the invading Persian Empire of Xerxes I, at the pass of Thermopylae in central Greece. Vastly outnumbered, the Greeks held up the Persians advance for seven days in total (including three of battle), before the rear-guard was annihilated in one of history's most famous last stands.During two full days of battle, the small force led by King Leonidas I of Sparta blocked the only road through which the massive Persian army could pass. After the second day of battle, a local resident named Ephialtes betrayed the Greeks by revealing a mountain path that led behind the Greek lines. Aware that they were being outflanked, Leonidas dismissed the bulk of the Greek army, remaining to guard the rear with 300 Spartans, 700 Thespian, 400 Thebans and perhaps a few hundred others. The Persians succeeded in taking the pass but sustained losses disproportionate to those of the Greeks. Nevertheless, in doing so, they conquered Boeotia and Attica, burning Athens in the process. However, the fierce resistance of the Spartan-led army had given the Allies valuable time to prepare the defense of the Peloponnesus, at the isthmus of Corinth, and later that year the Athenian-led navy was able to win a decisive naval battle that would do much to determine the outcome of the war.The Greek victory at the Battle of Salamis prevented a naval invasion of ...

And sorry for any mispronounciations. This is a video I made with my friends on "The Battle of Thermopylae", where the famous 300 Spartans lead by Leonidas AND 7000 Greeks faced 200000 Persians. And though the Greeks lost the battle in three days, they left 20000 dead Persians to only 2000 Greeks dead. These three days allowed the Athenians to build their fleet and defeat the Persians at the battle of Salamina. In the end, the Greeks lost the battle of Thermopylae, but they won the war. And, until today, this battle remains as one of the most famous battles in all European history.
