UNESCO: Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity - 2008 URL: www.unesco.org Description: Kabuki is a Japanese traditional theatre form, which originated in the Edo period at the beginning of the seventeenth century and was particularly popular among townspeople. Originally, both men and women acted in Kabuki plays, but eventually only male actors performed the plays: a tradition that has remained to the present day. Male actors specialized in womens roles are called onnagata. Two other major role types are aragoto (rough style) and wagoto (soft style). Kabuki plays are about historical events and moral conflict in relationships of the heart. The actors speak in a monotone voice and are accompanied by traditional instruments. The Kabuki stage is equipped with several gadgets, such as revolving stages and trapdoors through which the actors can appear and disappear. Another speciality of the Kabuki stage is a footbridge (hanamichi) that extends into the audience. Important characteristics of Kabuki theatre include its particular music, costumes, stage devices and props as well as specific plays, language and acting styles, such as the mie, in which the actor holds a characteristic pose to establish his character. Keshÿ, the particular make-up, provides an element of style easily recognizable even by those unfamiliar with the art form. Theatre director Simon Stone deconstructs some of the common visual and audio tricks of modern theatre in this first-ever performance utilising a cast of first-time volunteer actors recruited in the days prior to TEDxSydney 2011 and rehearsed just once, the night before the event! Simon is a writer, director and actor. After graduating from The Victorian College of the Arts, he acted in the films Jindabyne, Kokoda, Balibo, Blame and Eye of the Storm, and on stage in Benedict Andrews' Belvoir production of Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?. In 2007 Simon founded the independent theatre ensemble The Hayloft Project. For Hayloft he wrote and directed Thyestes and The Only Child; adapted and directed The Suicide, Spring Awakening, Platonov, and one third of the multi-director project 3xSisters; and directed BC. In 2009 he directed his first main stage production for Belvoir, The Promise. In 2010 he was invited by newly-appointed Artistic Director Ralph Myers to become Belvoir's Resident Director. His first production in this position was the 2011 production of The Wild Duck, which he wrote and directed after Ibsen's play of the same name. The Wayang Puppet Theatre
UNESCO: Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity - 2008 URL: www.unesco.org Description: Renowned for its elaborate puppets and complex musical styles, this ancient form of storytelling originated on the Indonesian island of Java. For ten centuries wayang flourished at the royal courts of Java and Bali as well as in rural areas. Wayang has spread to other islands (Lombok, Madura, Sumatra and Borneo) where various local performance styles and musical accompaniments have developed. While these carefully handcrafted puppets vary in size, shape and style, two principal types prevail: the three-dimensional wooden puppet (wayang klitik or golèk) and the flat leather shadow puppet (wayang kulit) projected in front of a screen lit from behind. Both types are characterized by costumes, facial features and articulated body parts. The master puppeteer (dalang) manipulates the swivelling arms by means of slender sticks attached to the puppets. Singers and musicians play complex melodies on bronze instruments and gamelan drums. In the past, puppeteers were regarded as cultivated literary experts who transmitted moral and aesthetic values through their art. The words and actions of comic characters representing the ordinary person have provided a vehicle for criticizing sensitive social and political issues, and it is believed that this special role may have contributed to wayangs survival over the centuries. This has been requested for a while, and as of yet, this is the only DVD available for the Thom Yorke shows at the Orpheum Theatre (now known as Atoms For Peace). What RLBayers has done is provide all of the songs for the 5th of October, but has used 5 tracks from the 2nd to complete the set. I'll leave the track numbers in the description to show what order the songs were played on the 5th. The Freedom Theatre, Jenin, West Bank, Palestine
An organization started by Juliano Mer Khamis that I volunteered at in the summer of '08 in the Jenin Refugee Camp in Jenin, the heartland of the West Bank in Palestine. During the summer Lisa Fender and I taught storytelling, cinema photography, video editing to the theatre's instructors. As a final project we all worked on this video telling people what The Freedom Theatre is and what it does. Lisa even managed to get 'detained' in a detention centre by the Israeli military while doing some of the filming for this piece. Palestinian theatre
This week Artsworld visits Freedom Theatre in the Jenin refugee camp. This pioneering project is the only professional venue for theatre and the arts in the north of the Palestinian occupied territories. Zakaria Zubeidi, the head of the al Aqsa Martyr's Brigade in Jenin in the West Bank, has now put down his weapons and believes that children's theatre is an important way to fight for Palestinian statehood. The programme also features the China Disabled People's Performing Arts Troupe, which has entertained audiences in more than 50 countries. The troupe consists of 100 performers who say their tightly knit community has given them a renewed sense of pride and purpose despite a history of discrimination that continues to haunt many of China's 80 million people with disabilities.
