Scenes from the Great Depression
From the Dorothea Lange Collection - photos of migrants in California during the Great Depression (1935-1945). It is interesting how the thread of comments for this video has taken a life of its own. I posted this video as a tribute to Dorothea Lange, as her amazing photos transcend both race and time. She had a unique ability to recognize and capture the soul of people who struggled under extreme conditions. Many people from the Great Depression went on to lead long productive lives, and it is heartening to read comments from relatives of those who survived. Perhaps we can all learn from the photos and the glimpse they provide into American history.

The Great Depression - Professor Chesterton
"Many volumes have been written about the Great Depression of 1929-1941 and its impact on the lives of millions of Americans. Historians, economists and politicians have all combed the wreckage searching for the "black box" that will reveal the cause of the calamity. Sadly, all too many of them decide to abandon their search, finding it easier perhaps to circulate a host of false and harmful conclusions about the events of seven decades ago. Consequently, many people today continue to accept critiques of free-market capitalism that are unjustified and support government policies that are economically destructive." - Lawrence W. Reed Text based on the essay "Great Myths of the Great Depression" www.fee.org Published by the Foundation for Economic Education FEE's Website: www.fee.org FEE's Facebook page: www.facebook.com Written, Illustrated, Produced and Read by Professor Chesterton © Chesterton Cobb, January 2012 Contact Professor Chesterton at: professorchesterton@gmail.com Factual Correction: By "Roosevelt loses the next election" I mean "Roosevelt died in office."
US History Overview 2 - Reconstruction to the Great Depression
Reconstruction to the Great Depression
Alan Watts - Money
The following is from another speech given by Alan Watts entitled "From Time & Eternity". *"Do you remember the Great Depression? One day everything was going all right. Everybody was pretty wealthy and had plenty to eat. The next day everybody was in poverty. What had happened? Had the fields disappeared; had the dairy vanished into thin air; had the fish of the sea ceased to exist; had human beings lost their energy; their skills and their brains? No, but on the morning after the Depression a man came to work building a house and the foreman said to him "Sorry chum you can't work today, there ain't no inches." He said "What do you mean there ain't no inches?" "Yeah" he said, "Yeah, we got lumber, we got metal, we even got tape measures." The foreman said "The trouble with you is you don't understand business. There are no inches. We have been using too many of them and there's not enough to go around." Because what happened in the Great Depression was a slump in money. Human beings are so unbelievably stupid, that they confused money with wealth. They don't realize that money is a measure of wealth, in exactly the same way that meters are a measure of length. They think it is something that is valuable in and of itself. And as a result of that get into unbelievable trouble, in exactly the same way time is nothing but an abstract measure of motion. And we keep counting time. We have the sensation time is running out, and we bug ourselves with this as we sit and watch the ...

Where are the Jobs? The Parallels between Today and the Great Depression
The Great Recession officially ended way back in June of 2009, so why are so many Americans still out of work? It's not because politicians were twiddling their thumbs. Indeed, from from bailouts to "Cash for Clunkers" to the massive stimulus plan, government has busied itself with trying to fix the economy. And, according to President Obama, this "bold, persistent, experimentation" has brought our country back from the brink. Obama borrows that phrase from President Franklin Rooselvelt, and today's president has a lot in common with the original bold, persistent, experimenter. Like Obama, FDR was a charismatic Democrat who replaced an unpopular Republican during a time of crisis. And like Obama, FDR championed a slew of policies designed to get America back to work. Today many Americans credit FDR with rescuing our nation from the Great Depression, but there's plenty wrong with that view, says Lee Ohanian, a UCLA economics professor who specializes in economic crisis. "What's wrong with that view is that private-sector job growth did not come back under Roosevelt," says Ohanian, who notes that Americans often forget how long the Great Depression lasted. Unemployment stood at 17 percent in 1939, a decade after the infamous stock market crash, and, although times were much worse back then, Ohanian sees troubling parallels between the Great Depression and the Great Recession. In both instances our nation emerged from a severe downturn with strong productivity growth and the ...

IMPORTANT: There have been a few requests concerning this video. The first is to notify people that when preparing lentils to check for stones. There should be a warning about this on the packaging of your lentils and please follow their instructions. The second item is a question about why Clara reuses the lemon from the marinade. It has long been known that citric acid (in this case a lemon) is nature's anti-bacterial agent. Today it is more commonly known as produce wash or FIT (Fruit and Vegetable Wash). There are many studies out today that consider FIT a more successful anti-bacterial agent than chlorine dioxide (which is produced chemically rather than naturally). Many cultures continue to use the citric acid from lemons and limes to cleanse meat and fish as this marinade does. Clara cooks quite responsibly and always uses the freshest meats and fish when preparing her meals. You must always cook any meal at any time at your own risk. Clara is only providing you with lessons she has learned and she has lived to a ripe old age. If you are nervous about her tips then just enjoy the videos for the historical value. The Road to World War II - Program Five - The Great Depression and Foreign Affairs
The Depression is a traumatic national experience which shatters US self-confidence and paralyzes foreign policy, leading to further isolationism. The worldwide depression gives rise to national dictators, but the US is so preoccupied with domestic problems that it ignores the threat. President Hoover is not equipped to deal with the national crisis. The London Naval Conference insults Japan and when the Japanese invade Manchuria, a preoccupied United States does nothing. This classic documentary series, The Road to WWII, follows the events that inevitably sparked World War II, capturing the drama, the excitement and the juxtapositions of these crucial years between the end of World War I and Pearl Harbor. Former CBS News correspondent and commentator, Eric Sevareid, one of the world's most respected figures in journalism, presents this extraordinary series which features stunning original newsreels, soundtracks, and rare archival footage. It was the era of Lucky Lindy, bootleg, Babe Ruth, Valentino and assembly-line Fords. It was also the time of market collapse, Klan meetings, demagogues abroad, red scares at home and bread lines. The best of times, the worst of times, and the times in which the United States reluctantly moved center stage. The Road to WWII is an innovative 16-part series that examines this crucial time as it progressed from the Armistice in 1918 to the attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. You will see the people who made history, hear their voices, and ...
