The Big Pink 4AD Session
Ahead of the release of their second album, Future This, The Big Pink have recorded a set of 5 songs as part of the 4AD Sessions series. Bringing to life the anthemic qualities of the new album, the session is a showcase of the unabashed step towards stadium dynamics the band have made on Future This, while also displaying the often-curveball influences that continue to underpin their best work. Filmed in 3 Mills Studios, the location was to have a coincidental resonance with the music. Based on Three Mill Island in Bromley-by-Bow, the island is London's oldest surviving industrial centre with evidence to suggest that the mills it houses were listed in the Domesday Book. The grand historical associations and JG Ballard-esque setting appears fitting of the darkened, industrial undertones that course through even the most pop moments of The Big Pink's music. Channeling the epic, immersive and otherworldy feel of the new album, the stark backdrop of the warehouse-like space was coupled with lasers used in a structural way to frame the band and change the physical surroundings. Playing several tracks from Future This, alongside spiritual cousin 'Velvet', taken from the first album, the session captures what makes The Big Pink such an intriguing band. The group consists of Robbie Furze (vocals, guitar) and Milo Cordell (keyboards, synths, vocals). They are best known for their 2009 single "Dominos", which peaked at #27 on the UK Singles Chart and #36 on the Billboard Alternative Songs chart in the United States. This London duo use gritty beats, droning guitars, abstract effects and dreamy vocals to create a soundscape that is arty yet tuneful. They have previously supported Muse, TV on the Radio, Florence + The Machine, Crystal Castles and Klaxons. Milo Cordell is son of 1960s pop producer Denny and runs the Merok label, which has released cutting-edge dance acts Klaxons and Crystal Castles. Robbie Furze is a former guitarist with electro-punk singer Alec Empire and is also a founding member of the band Panic DHH. To date they have released three singles - Too Young To Love/Crystal Visions (House Anxiety), Velvet and Stop The World (4AD). Their debut album "A Brief History of Love" was recorded at the Electric Ladyland Studios in New York and was released in the UK on the 14th of September 2009. The Big Pink bringing their live 'electro-rock' set to the legendary King Tuts Wah Wah Hut in Glasgow on 14th February 2012. 00.00mins - Stay Gold 03.55mins - Velvet Surprisingly only my first visit to King Tuts. Shocked by the size of the venue (tiny - imagining Oasis on that little stage being discovered by Alan McGhee left me bemused) and initially the sound in the venue. Unfortunately the sound engineers seemed to disregard the size of the stage to crowd area. Basically too much volume which distorted what should have been a clean sound - a distinct lack of clarity. Perhaps I had high expectations for a venue hyped to 'legendary' status. Perhaps I was annoyed that the visual intimateness (could have been your front room) was being ruined by an alien audio - it didn't marry up with what I thought I was about to experience. Later in the set (possibly at the request from the singer - he motioned to the sound guys around this time), the sound appeared to improve. Things became audible and less corrosive on the ear. The vibe that The Big Pink create on their records had a chance to be recreated. The band seemed fairly relaxed. No great showmanship - but plenty of signs of someone looking to deliver their music competently, with sporadic thanks to the "true fans" for coming out to see them. Several guitar switches conveyed the seriousness to deliver and a fairly swift jacket grabbing stage exit after the final song, let us know the job was done and dusted - encores were not ...
