The Band - The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down

From the 1978 film 'The Last Waltz' Virgil Caine is the name, and I served on the Danville train, Til Stoneman's cavalry came and tore up the tracks again. In the winter of '65, We were hungry, just barely alive. By May tenth, Richmond had fell, it's a time I remember, oh so well, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, when all the bells were ringing, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, and all the people were singin'. They went, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Back with my wife in Tennessee, When one day she called to me, Said "Virgil, quick, come and see, there goes the Robert E. Lee!" Now I don't mind choppin' wood, and I don't care if the money's no good. Ya take what ya need and ya leave the rest, But they should never have taken the very best. The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, when all the bells were ringing, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, and all the people were singin'. They went, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Like my father before me, I will work the land, And like my brother above me, who took a rebel stand. He was just eighteen, proud and brave, But a Yankee laid him in his grave, And I swear by the mud below my feet, You can't raise a Caine back up when he's in defeat. The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, when all the bells were ringing, The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down, and all the people were singin'. They went, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na, Na,

And the band played Waltzing Mathilda

www.atheturk.com In memoriam of thoses, anzacs, turks, frenchs who lost their lives in Gallipoli. The song "Waltzing Mathilda" is performed by the Pogues. When I was a young man I carried my pack And I lived the free life of a rover From the Murrays green basin to the dusty outback I waltzed my Matilda all over Then in nineteen fifteen my country said Son It's time to stop rambling 'cause there's work to be done So they gave me a tin hat and they gave me a gun And they sent me away to the war And the band played Waltzing Matilda As we sailed away from the quay And amidst all the tears and the shouts and the cheers We sailed off to Gallipoli How well I remember that terrible day How the blood stained the sand and the water And how in that hell that they called Suvla Bay We were butchered like lambs at the slaughter Johnny Turk he was ready, he primed himself well He chased us with bullets, he rained us with shells And in five minutes flat he'd blown us all to hell Nearly blew us right back to Australia But the band played Waltzing Matilda As we stopped to bury our slain We buried ours and the Turks buried theirs Then we started all over again Now those that were left, well we tried to survive In a mad world of blood, death and fire And for ten weary weeks I kept myself alive But around me the corpses piled higher Then a big Turkish shell knocked me arse over tit And when I woke up in my hospital bed And saw what it had done, I wished I was dead Never knew there were worse ...

Eric Bogle - The Band Played Waltzing Matilda

****Note added 25 April 2010: When I was asked to create this presentation for a Remembrance Day assembly, I didn't know how I would show an "anti-war" song at an event that is supposed to honour our veterans. At the same time, war and military conflict was such a distant concept for our students, I wanted to some how make history relevant to them, let alone an "Australian" song that most of the our middle school students have never heard. The more I listened to Bogle's words, the more I realized that this song was about more than a moment in history. It's about how history repeats itself and the great sacrifices that are made during war and how futile it all is if we fail to learn from our mistakes. Making the transition from B/W to full colour to coincide with Bogle's words "We started all over again," I wanted to show how war is part of our past, present and (unfortunately) future. Great sacrifices have been made because of war. Bogle asks "What are they marching for?" I say they are marching to honour those sacrifices. If any veteran is offended by this video, I truly do apologize. ************************* April 25 - ANZAC Day November 11 - Remembrance Day "Waltzing Matilda" is a very famous Australian folk song and a "Matilda" was the name given to the pack that Australian farm workers carried on their backs. To "Waltz Matilda" meant to carry your pack of belongings through the bush. The song "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" by Eric Bogle is about Australian ...

The Band - When I paint my masterpiece

From their 1971's LP "Cahoots", one of the well known Bob's songs. Oh, the streets of Rome are filled with rubble Ancient footprints are everywhere You can almost think that you're seein' double On a cold, dark night on the Spanish Stairs Got to hurry on back to my hotel room Where I've got me a date with Botticelli's niece She promised that she'd be right there with me When I paint my masterpiece Oh, the hours I've spent inside the Coliseum Dodging lions and wastin' time Oh, those mighty kings of the jungle, I could hardly stand to see 'em Yes, it sure has been a long, hard climb Train wheels runnin' through the back of my memory When I ran on the hilltop following a pack of wild geese Someday, everything is gonna be smooth like a rhapsody When I paint my masterpiece Sailin' round the world in a dirty gondola Oh, to be back in the land of Coca-Cola! I left Rome and landed in Brussels On a plane ride so bumpy that I almost cried Clergymen in uniform and young girls pullin' muscles Everyone was there to greet me when I stepped inside Newspapermen eating candy Had to be held down by big police Someday, everything is gonna be diff'rent When I paint my masterpiece

Up On Cripple Creek - The Band (The Band 5 of 10)

UP ON CRIPPLE CREEK The Band The Band (1970) When I get off of this mountain, you know where I want to go? Straight down the Mississippi river, to the Gulf of Mexico To Lake Charles, Louisiana, little Bessie, girl that I once knew She told me just to come on by, if there's anything she could do Up on Cripple Creek she sends me If I spring a leak she mends me I don't have to speak, she defends me A drunkard's dream if I ever did see one Good luck had just stung me, to the race track I did go She bet on one horse to win and I bet on another to show The odds were in my favor, I had 'em five to one When that nag to win came around the track, sure enough she had won Up on Cripple Creek she sends me If I spring a leak she mends me I don't have to speak, she defends me A drunkard's dream if I ever did see one I took up all of my winnings, and I gave my little Bessie half And she tore it up and threw it in my face, just for a laugh Now there's one thing in the whole wide world, I sure would like to see That's when that little love of mine, dips her doughnut in my tea Up on Cripple Creek she sends me If I spring a leak she mends me I don't have to speak, she defends me A drunkard's dream if I ever did see one Now me and my mate were back at the shack, we had Spike Jones on the box She said, "I can't take the way he sings, but I love to hear him talk" Now that just gave my heart a throb, to the bottom of my feet And I swore and I took another pull, my Bessie can't be beat Up on ...

THE BAND live at Big Pink 1969 "Up On Cripple Creek" beyond rare

Incredible footage of The Band (said to be) from the house they called Big Pink (Bob Dylan's "club house"). Up On Cripple Creek - Robbie Robertson, Levon Helm, Garth... everyone sweet and young and rockin'. Although this turns out to not be Pig Pink, the footage is equal to the time frame and area. Awesome stuff this one, big time rare and early. ** Introduction by Robbie + Grace Slick speaks for a few seconds part way through).** Regardless of location, it is excellent footage...

The Band - The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down (1969) w/Lyrics [720p HD] *For Levon, With Love!*

[Video #27] from www.youtube.com the address for MetalGuruMessiah's Musical Paint Box! Check out my other videos! The 27th video in my series is a live version of The Band's song "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" which was originally released on their 1969 debut album, The Band. The version in the video is actually from The Last Waltz concert from 1976. I originally worked the video to the original version, but changed to the live one later on and neglected to change the album art in the opening and closing credits to reflect that change (it would be immediately corrected were it not for certain hassles involved with re-uploading). I like both versions of the song equally well, but the applause in the live version seemed to add another dimension to the images and as a bonus the live version was a bit longer allowing for more images. Levon Helms vocals are absolutely perfect....truly one of the greatest folk/rock singers of all time. I've always been a huge fan of The Band, in great part to Levon's extraordinary talent and contributions. UPDATE 04/18/12....Levon is very sick and is in the final stages of his battle with cancer. Having just recently lost my own father in the same way, I'm wishing Levon a peaceful exit from his tired physical vessel to a higher state of enlightenment and being. Levon has shined brightly for so many years and i'm going to miss him! Thanks for the happiness you brought into mine, and so many other's lives.......soon you will shine even ...

Inspired Bicycles - Danny MacAskill April 2009

Filmed over the period of a few months in and around Edinburgh by Dave Sowerby, this video of Inspired Bicycles team rider Danny MacAskill (more info at www.dannymacaskill.com) features probably the best collection of street/street trials riding ever seen. There's some huge riding, but also some of the most technically difficult and imaginative lines you will ever see. Without a doubt, this video pushes the envelope of what is perceived as possible on a trials bike. Credit to Band of Horses for their epic song 'The Funeral.' Levon Helm of The Band Dead After Cancer Battle

UPDATE: Levon Helm is reportedly dead after a battle with cancer at the age of 71. www.spinner.com Fans and musicians around the globe are sending positive vibes toward The Band's Levon Helm, after his family announced via the legendary drummer's website that he was losing a battle to cancer. Helm—whose no-trappings tenor can be heard on some of The Band's biggest hits, like "The Weight" and "Up On Cripple Creek"—was first diagnosed with throat cancer a decade ago, for which he went under intensive radiation treatments. But the musician continued to perform, host events and record bands at his studio in Woodstock, NY. He also appeared in films over the years, including The Right Stuff and Coal Miner's Daughter, playing the father of country music star Loretta Lynn. A message from Helm's family said "Please send your prayers and love to him as he makes his way through this part of his journey." Many fans are doing just that on Twitter today, by sharing links to clips of his music.
