Climbing the Grand Teton, Upper Exum ridge, August 15-17, 2010

This video shows the whole climb, from parking lot to parking lot, including hiking through Garnet Canyon, through the meadows, camping at the moraine, up the lower saddle, and the entire Upper Exum route, including most major pitches and key route elements. We took our time with an approach on day 1 to a campsite on the moraine below the lower saddle. On day two we woke at 5am and headed up at 6am. There were plenty of groups on the Upper Exum, so it moved fairly slowly at times, but we were also being cautious and roped up for 4 different pitches: Wall Street stepover, Golden Staircase, Friction Pitch, and V-Pitch. We summited just after 1pm with some mild clouds overhead, but we got off the summit quickly after snapping a few photos. On the descent we took the normal Owen-Spaulding route with both rappels. Also on the descent I started getting major pain in my left knee just before reaching the lower saddle, so Jason and I decided to stay one more night at the moraine to rest before hiking out the next morning. After four hours of enjoyable hiking in the morning, we were eating hamburgers at Billy's Giant Hamburgers in Jackson, WY. John and Jason D. went on to climb the Middle with a Scout troop on Tuesday. An awesome climb. Seth Packham, Jason Packham, John Dilworth, and Jason Delight climb the Grand Teton (13775 ft) in Wyoming, USA, via the Upper Exum route. Weather in Grand Teton: Episode 2 of the From Valley to Peak series

Weather in Grand Teton National Park is the second of four videos in a new series, From Valley to Peak. The films were recently completed by Jackson-based videographers Jesse Ryan and Ryan Christopher of New Thought Media on behalf of Grand Teton National Park Foundation and Grand Teton Association. The project was commissioned in an effort to highlight the natural wonders of Grand Teton through a medium that is both contemporary and accessible. The four minute videos showcase a selection of striking natural occurrences through artfully captured landscapes, time-lapses and insightful narration. Grand Teton National Park Foundation provides private financial support for special projects that enhance and protect Grand Teton National Park's treasured resources. Since 1997, our organization has raised more than $20 million for education-based capital projects, work and learn programs that reconnect youth to nature, and wildlife research and protection. By funding initiatives that go beyond what the National Park Service could accomplish on its own, Foundation friends solve park challenges and create a solid future for Grand Teton. www.gtnpf.org

Grand Teton climb

Soloing the Grand Teton is the second most enjoyable thing you can do while breathing hard. BTW, the climber in the video who says "Shwing!" is Ken Jern, who, several years ago, slipped on ice (right where he's standing in the vid) and tumbled about 50 feet down the pitch below him, breaking several ribs. "It made for an interesting, painful day," he recalled with a smile. The song, "Simple Life," is from the Jason Spooner Trio. Check out their music at www.jasonspooner.com

The Teton Dam Disaster

At 11:57 am on June 5, 1976, the Teton Dam, a 305-foot high earthfill dam across the Teton River in Madison County, southeast Idaho, failed completely. At the time of failure, the reservoir was almost full and contained 251000 acre-feet of water. After the breach the main part of the reservoir emptied in about 5 hours. The snake river valley was devastated. My family was living in the Idaho Falls area at the time of the flood. My father and uncle took photos of the aftermath. This video is comprised of never-seen-before photos taken by them shortly after the flood ripped through the valley. Both my father and uncle took part in the battle to save Idaho Falls from the oncoming rush of water. Sources used in video: Teton Dam Failure Narrative and Teton Dam Flood. Teton Explorer 4000 Backpack review

This is my new Teton Explorer 4000. Its a 4000 cubic inch (65L) backpack. 2 medium sized pockets on one side and one larger pocket on the other give you plenty of room to store all your gear. Another large pocket on the top will hold raingear, trail bars, maps with plenty of extra room for more. The sleeping bag compartment is a little small but should work out nicely with a light weight sleeping bag. There are plenty of extra straps and tie off places to attach any gear from sleeping mats to tents. The shoulder straps are completly adjustable to fit any height. I am 6'2'' and it fits me well. The hip pad and lumbar regions are also heavily padded to give you extra comfort for longer hikes.Comes with a large rain cover to keep your bag dry. I would recommend this to all begginer backpackers or the experianced alike. I bought mine for $58.99 at www.amazon.com search Teton Explorer 4000
