Google Chrome Speed Tests

These speed tests were filmed at actual web page rendering times. If you're interested in the technical details, read on! Equipment used: - Computer: MacBook Pro laptop with Windows installed - Monitor - 24" Asus: We had to replace the standard fluorescent backlight with very large tungsten fixtures to funnel in more light to capture the screen. In addition, we flipped the monitor 180 degrees to eliminate a shadow from the driver board and set the system preferences on the computer to rotate 180 degrees. No special software was used in this process. - Camera: Phantom v640 High Speed Camera at 1920 x 1080, films up to 2700 fps "Why does allrecipes.com in the potato gun sequence appear at once, and not the text first and images second? And why does it appear to render from bottom of the screen to the top?" Chrome sends the rendered page to the video card buffer all at once, which is why allrecipes.com appears at once, and not with the text first and images second. Chrome actually paints the page from top to bottom, but to eliminate a shadow from the driver board, we had to flip the monitor upside down and set the system preferences in Windows to rotate everything 180 degrees, resulting in the page appearing to render from bottom to top. "Why does the top one third of the page appear first on the weather.com page load?" Sometimes only half the buffer gets filled before the video card sends its buffer over to the LCD panel. This is because Chrome on Windows uses GDI to draw ...

Hearing Test

Set your volume to regular settings, as if you were watching any YouTube movie. Watch Hearing Test and listen very carefully using headphones. The video displays audio frequencies that are being played. You can determine what you can or what you cannot hear. Typically, depending on age, audible frequencies will be between 20-30 Hertz on the low side of the audio spectrum, and 10-16 kiloHertz on the high side of the audio spectrum. There are individuals, however, who can can hear the whole spectrum between 16 Hz (Hertz) and 20 kHz (kiloHertz). Because of the encoding used during the audio preparation, tests above 18 kHz are not very reliable. Please make sure that you do not increase the volume just to see if you can hear anything! Self-Driving Car Test: Steve Mahan

We announced our self-driving car project in 2010 to make driving safer, more enjoyable, and more efficient. Having safely completed over 200000 miles of computer-led driving, we wanted to share one of our favorite moments. Here's Steve, who joined us for a special drive on a carefully programmed route to experience being behind the wheel in a whole new way. We organized this test as a technical experiment, but we think it's also a promising look at what autonomous technology may one day deliver if rigorous technology and safety standards can be met. Squirrel Memory test? MUST SEE!!!!!

This entry for NewScientist proves that squirrels don't smell nuts. A squirrel's memory is phenomenal. If you try this experiment at home it is important to distinguish between different squirrels. In this experiment there were three of them. All three squirrels exhibited the same memory traits: They always returned to the same position. Collectively they made over 300 separate trips and seemed to work as a team to systematically clear the hoard of nuts. Here is a link to NewScientist's Channel on Youtube, I highly recommend their channel: uk.youtube.com I would love to be able to delve deeper into animal science at dawn/dusk but my camcorder is limited to bright sunny days, I don't expect to win the competition so I'll keep saving for a better quality video camera. Burrying nuts, never more than one or two per cache, leaves the squirrel with food stashed in thousands of different sites. The squirrel therefore ensures it will not loose everything in a single theft, but it must pay the price by having to remember where all those nuts were cached.

Airless tire test Humvee vs Hummer

Airless tire From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Airless tire Non-pneumatic tires (NPT), or Airless tires, are tires that are not supported by air pressure. They are used on some small vehicles such as riding lawn mowers and motorized golf carts. They are also used on heavy equipment such as backhoes, which are required to operate on sites such as building demolition, where tire puncture is likely. Tires composed of closed-cell polyurethane foam are also made for bicycles and wheelchairs. The main advantage of airless tires is that they cannot go flat, but they are far less common than air filled tires. Airless tires generally have higher rolling resistance and provide much less suspension than similarly shaped and sized pneumatic tires. Other problems for airless tires include dissipating the heat buildup that occurs when they are driven. Airless tires are often filled with compressed polymers (plastic), rather than air. Michelin is currently developing an integrated tire and wheel combination, the "Tweel" (derived from "tire" and "wheel," which, as the name "Tweel" suggests, are combined into one new, fused part), that operates entirely without air. Michelin claims its "Tweel" has load carrying, shock absorbing, and handling characteristics that compare favorably to conventional pneumatic tires. Automotive engineering group of mechanical engineering department at Clemson University is developing a low energy loss airless tire with Michelin through the NIST ATP project ...

REI Match Test

These are the Storm Proof matches from REI that easily surpass every other match stick claiming to be an excellent "wilderness" match. Unlike other matches that only have a wax coat over the sulfur to keep it "waterproof", these matches have more than half the stick covered in sulfur making it virtually impossible to snuff. These matches will burn in the most extreme conditions. Albeit highly unlikely that you would be able to start a fire in such conditions you can rest assured that the match itself will not fail. We put the match through a couple torture tests pushing the most extreme climates of gale force winds, monsoon rain storms and the complete abscence of oxygen. Even burying the match in muddy water was not enough to stop the sulfur from burning. These matches are an excellent addition to any survival situation or backpacking trip when the need for fire is priority one. Although somewhat expensive compared to regular matches, the peace of mind they bring is an invaluable asset. Furthermore, the money saved when you don't have to buy a water proof storage container more than compensates the price. They are about 6 bucks at any REI store.

nuclear testing.wmv

Japanese artist Isao Hashimoto has created a beautiful, undeniably scary time-lapse map of the 2053 nuclear explosions which have taken place between 1945 and 1998, beginning with the Manhattan Project's "Trinity" test near Los Alamos and concluding with Pakistan's nuclear tests in May of 1998. This leaves out North Korea's two alleged nuclear tests in this past decade (the legitimacy of both of which is not 100% clear). Each nation gets a blip and a flashing dot on the map whenever they detonate a nuclear weapon, with a running tally kept on the top and bottom bars of the screen. Hashimoto, who began the project in 2003, says that he created it with the goal of showing"the fear and folly of nuclear weapons." It starts really slow — if you want to see real action, skip ahead to 1962 or so — but the buildup becomes overwhelming.

Kids Marshmallow Experiment

The marshmallow experiment is a famous test of this concept conducted by Walter Mischel at Stanford University and discussed by Daniel Goleman in his popular work. In the 1960s, a group of four-year olds were given a marshmallow and promised another, only if they could wait 20 minutes before eating the first one. Some children could wait and others could not. The researchers then followed the progress of each child into adolescence, and demonstrated that those with the ability to wait were better adjusted and more dependable (determined via surveys of their parents and teachers), and scored an average of 210 points higher on the Scholastic Aptitude Test.

Nissan Juke-R vs GT-R track test - Auto Express

Full story here: www.autoexpress.co.uk Subscribe to Auto Express magazine and get 6 issues for £1 plus a free gift: subscribe.autoexpress.co.uk So how did the Juke-R and GT-R compare on a lap of the south circuit at Bedford Autodrome? The supercar went first, when the track was still slightly damp, but the low-down thrust of its engine came to the fore as it recorded a time of 65.8 seconds. By the time the Juke-R went against the stopwatch, the track had dried out a bit. The less aerodynamic shape held the car back over the circuit's long straights, and it took 1.3 seconds longer, with a time of 67.1 seconds -- a sterling effort considering its less powerful engine and additional weight.
