Canto a tenore, Sardinian Pastoral Songs
UNESCO: Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity - 2008 URL: www.unesco.org Description: Canto a tenore has developed within the pastoral culture of Sardinia. It represents a form of polyphonic singing performed by a group of four men using four different voices called bassu, contra, boche and mesu boche. One of its characteristics is the deep and guttural timbre of the bassu and contra voices. It is performed standing in a close circle. The solo singers chants a piece of prose or a poem while the other voices form an accompanying chorus. Most practitioners live in the region of Barbagia and other parts of central Sardinia. Their art of singing is very much embedded in the daily life of local communities. Often it is performed spontaneously in local bars called su zilleri, but also at more formal occasions, such as weddings, sheepshearings, religious festivities or the Barbaricino carnival. The Canto a tenore encompasses a vast repertoire that varies within Sardinia. The most common melodies are the serenade boche e notte (the voice of the night) and dance songs such as the mutos, gosos and ballos. The lyrics are either ancient or contemporary poems on present-day issues, such as emigration, unemployment and politics. In this sense, the songs can be regarded as both traditional and contemporary cultural expressions. Giuseppe Giacomini was born at Veggiano near Padua, Italy, on the 7th of September 1940. He began his vocal career under the guiding hands of Elena Fava Ceriati in Padua, Marcello del Monaco in Treviso and Vladimiro Badiali in Milano, and won song contests in Napoli, Vercelli and Milano. His professional debut followed in 1966 at the theatre of Vercelli as Pinkerton in Puccini's Madame Butterfly, followed by performances in Parma and Modena in 1969 as Turiddu and Des Grieux. He was then fortunate to appear outside Italy and starred in Manon Lescaut in Berlin 1970, in Il Tabarro in Lisboa 1971, Tosca in Barcelona 1972 and Wien in 1973, and in 1973 at the state theatre of München. Upon his return to Italy in 1974 he received considerable successes at the the prime Italian opera houses; La Scala di Milano, where he performed in La forza del destino in 1974 and La Boheme in 1975; Teatro San Carlo of Napoli, the Teatro Reggio in Torino, the Opera Di Roma and the Teatro Reggio in Parma. The Italian successes took him to the Teatro Colón of Buenos Aires, the Théâtre de la Monnaie in Brussels, the Grand Opéra Paris, Berlin, Köln, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt am Main, Hamburg, München and Wiesbaden; he performed at the national opera of Budapest, in Barcelona, Lisboa, Zürich and Boston - the USA debut took place 1975 at the Connecticut Opera as Ramirez in La Fanciulla del West.The awaited Met debut came in 1976 as Alvaro in Verdi's La forza del destino, triggering a series of apperances ...
