Renata Tebaldi - Follie! Sempre libera - La Traviata - Verdi

Renata Tebaldi (Pesaro, Italy, February 1, 1922 San Marino, December 19, 2004). This is a true spinto soprano voice. The spinto voice is one that can open up to dramatic power while also being able to sing lyric roles. Traviata probably was not ideal for her voice because of the fioratura, but she sings it beautifully here nevertheless.

Renata Tebaldi in Puccini's Tosca - Vissi d'arte

This is, in my opinion, a perfect vissi d'arte. The chosen speed is slow yet the control of her vibrato and registers is exemplary, the phrasing heartbreaking without ever loosing sense of the musical line and the tone...well, Tebaldi's tone doesn't need introductions. Enjoy!

Renata Tebaldi in Verdi's Giovanna D'arco - Pronta Sono

Anyone who thinks Tebaldi was only great in sweet, Mimi-like roles will be surprised by how well the role of the mighty virgin suits her. She manages to remain feminine due to the gorgeous sound and beautiful phrasing but her power and determination tell us you can't mess with this girl! With Tebaldi we hear a young Carlo Bergonzi, only months after his tenor conversion. His Verdian style is already exemplary.

Renata Tebaldi sings Giuseppe Martucci "La canzone dei ricordi"

A very rare stuff, Renata Tebaldi beautifully sang this profound aria from a song cycle by an Italian Romantic composer, Giuseppe Martucci (1856-1909) "La canzone dei ricordi". This song (entitled "Al folto bosco") is one of the total 7 songs of the cycle.

Renata Tebaldi in Verdi's La Forza del Destino: Son giunta!

The forze of destiny by a force of nature. Renata Tebaldi singing Son giunta! Madre, pietosa vergine at La Scala in 1955. This is one of those performances I find completely overwhelming. She pours out so much sound, emotion and grandness it's all too much to fit on a recording. Imagine how it must have felt in the theatre to be surrounded by this sound. This is the singing Verdi's masterpiece deserves.

Renata Tebaldi in Verdi's Otello - Ave Maria

There are not many sopranos who can keep me interested in Desdemona's long scene. The reason is Tebaldi. Her natural phrasing, crystal clear Italian and combination of powerful and tender sound have made her my one and only Desdemona.

La bohème, sung by Renata Tebaldi & Placido Domingo (1966, Boston)

(Read below for my remarks on Placido Domingo and greatness.) Sì, mi chiamano Mimì... O soave fanciulla from Giacomo Puccini's La bohème, sung by a still splendid Renata Tebaldi as Mimì and and the justifiably great Placido Domingo (read my remarks below) as Rodolfo in Boston in 1966. The conductor is Vincent la Selva. On another note, may I express my annoyance at the many Domingo bashers here on Youtube. Perhaps it is because he tried to popularize opera and people feel like opera should be an exclusive art, but I have observed that so many talk only about his so-called technical fallacies - namely, temperamental high notes and (later on) some inconsistent breath control - while completely dismissing his artistry, musicality, and (vocal/physical) acting. It is sheer arrogant elitism, always coming from the same people who praise the likes of, say, Tebaldi, Di Stefano, and Corelli to no end. I love Tebaldi, Di Stefano, and Corelli too; they are three of my absolute favourite singers. In fact, Tebaldi is my second favourite soprano. But facts are facts. I sometimes don't mind the metal in Tebaldi's high notes (it is even thrilling sometimes), but after 1960 (and even in the late 50s) they were just flat. And by flat, I mean near-semitone flat. But - oh - let's ignore that and pretend that they are still 'glorious' and 'perfect.' And Di Stefano's technique in the high notes and passagio? Nonexistent after his great, lyrical period. Of course (and like Domingo) he sang ...

100 Greatest Singers: RENATA TEBALDI

THIS PROJECT IS RESERVED ONLY FOR THE GREATEST! What´s your opinion about Renata Tebaldi? Please comment! Renata Tebaldi, Soprano (1922-2004) Giuseppe Verdi - La Forza del Destino Pace, pace mio dio (Recorded live 1953) My personal opinion: When the important reformer of italian opera Arturo Toscanini in 1950 placed Tebaldi for a performance of Verdis Requiem on a position high above the chorus, a legend began. Her voice should sound like a voice from heaven and with this, "La voce d´Angelo" was born, an attribute Renata Tebaldi ever was associated with. But this was only a promotional etiquette for one of the greatest spinto sopranos the world ever knew. Her first recordings are surprising, we hear another Tebaldi that we expected. In scenes from Verdis "Giovanna d`Arco" (1951) she was a dramatic virtuosa, her voice almost flawless, full, rich and with exciting agility. But then came Callas with her canto fiorito and her own applications of dramatic singing and Tebaldi was intelligent enough, to think it over. She changed her repertoire and leaves belcanto. Renata Tebaldi was a friendly shy person and to avoided a feud with Callas fans, she focused herself on america. Her admiration for Callas was great, and she confessed she never was fit for roles like Norma or Medea. So, Tebaldi continued the tradition of verismo and lyrico spinto with a beauty sound unequaled. Tebaldis first roles were in Faust, Mefistofele (Boito) and in Lohengrin. Early she adapted Aida, probably ...
