Teaching Science to Juries: Stent Litigation and Restenosis
For more information, refer to our blog post on scientific litigation: www.a2lc.com Used in a 2011 patent trial that resulted in the 6th largest patent verdict in history, this A2L Consulting litigation animation reflects the hard litigation consulting work that our firm does. This courtroom animation illustrates the problem that our client's invention solved. Namely, that using stents to treat a clogged artery can result in its reclogging when the body's natural processes create scar tissue where plaque had formerly been removed. This is called restenosis. This animation was produced entirely by A2L staff in house and reflects a capability simply not actually offered by other trial consulting firms. Trash for Teaching - Science Lessons - Optics
The Trash for Teaching Science Kit Project was inspired by a request from the Intel Corporation for an activity that their employees could do during a conference the company was having in Southern California. Steve Stanton, Executive director for Trash for Teaching recruited science writer and Cal Tech Alumni Dave Zobel to find a way to use industrial trash to help teach students about science. Zobel has thus far developed 4 different lesson plans: Principles of engineering (making a tin-can type telephone), Pathways of Light ( Optics principles including reflection and refraction), Moiré Patterns (examining complex visual patterns from simple textures), and Inductive, Deductive reasoning. The Intel employee activity turned out to be assembling the kits during their conference. The Pasadena Unified School District is in the process of testing the effectiveness of the kits in its science classes. Trash for Teaching (trashforteaching.org), a Los Angeles nonprofit organization, collects manufacturers' castoffs, discards, and overruns and in a variety of ways makes them available for use in art and science projects. Teachers and parents can contact Trash for Teaching about buying materials or kits for use in classrooms and at home. The materials are available at their warehouse or they have a fully stocked "Treasure Truck" can come to a school, park or a home birthday party. This video demonstrates how the new science kits can be used.
Jersey Shore Middle School Students Teach Science
Over two days in October 2011 all the students from the Jersey Shore Middle School hosted and taught all the students from the Jersey Shore Elementary School about science and technology with interactive exhibits. I think the video captures the excitement of the visits. However, I don't think my kinetic, fast editing style shows how well the middle school were at teaching. I am so proud of them! It's cool, too, that almost all of the teenage teachers experienced these middle school science events when THEY were in elementary school. So it goes full circle. My thanks to Michelle Moore and her parents, whose offer of apples set the whole thing in motion this year.
Teaching Science in Middle School
Now in its second year, IT-E3 (Information Technology - Engineering and Environmental Education Tools) is a program implemented at the University of California, San Diego by the Jacobs School of Engineering. It aims to help bring information technology into middle school classrooms, specifically by enabling teachers and their students to gather environmental data. The goal is to get students interested in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) careers. The program does this by providing new and innovative technology tools to classrooms, and educating middle school teachers on how to use those tools to help foster their student interest. About Teaching Science #1
This seminar deals with an approach to teaching science and technology (with some hints on performing arts thrown in) that takes into account the cognitive ability, the limitations and distortions that occur when children are introduced to new and for them unknown principles and concepts. Theoretical background in the beginning is followed by case histories and practical examples suggesting how we can help \children build a more complete database of knowledge that becomes invaluable in their future, more advanced studies.

Johnny Ball, stop teaching children junk science (02Mar11)
Ex-children's TV presenter Johnny Ball tells the politicians and school textbook writers to stop scaring children with the religion of climate change, and teach FACTS... it's no surprise that as the content of facts in schools has been dropping, so has the UK dropped in international tables on maths and other subjects. If you look at past papers for GCSE (free to download), you would be shocked how dumbed down subject like physics, chemistry, biology, geography have become. What science degree does Philip Hammond have? None, he has aw@nker PPE degree. What science degree does Alistair Darling have? None, he has aw@nker Law degree. And yet, it's these kind of politicians that claim they are right, and those that do not accept the religion of climate change are ALL wrong. Recorded from BBC's Daily Politics, 02 March 2011.

Operation Rocket - Smarter Every Day 39
TELL US YOUR PLAN! Then click this: - on.fb.me Watch the girls on the far right at 2:10. They had no idea what a rocket was. Happy Principal at 2:42 on the far left. The Gambia is the smallest country on the African Mainland. We went to a basic school and "performed an experiment" to measure the winds up in the sky. The teachers, children, and the principal loved it. The location of the school was deep into the heart of The Gambia: en.wikipedia.org ~~~~~~~~~~~MUSIC!~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The custom music was created by "A Shell In The Pit". The song used is "Rockets" by "A Shell In The Pit". Download it here: ashellinthepit.bandcamp.com Stevo was living in The Gambia while he served in the US Peace Corps. No laws were broken to get the Rockets to the School. I mailed them months in advance LEGALLY. They were in a book because the Gambian postal workers have a nasty habit of stealing things they want. Books are pretty good camouflage! We couldn't motivate kids to come out and watch, so we shot the first rocket for a small group of kids. After hearing the rocket and all their friends screaming and laughing they came running. The principal then instructed me to give an impromptu lesson on what rockets are, and why they are used to the whole school. While I gave the lesson, Stevo taught all the teachers how to reload and fire the rockets. In all, we did three shots and left the materials with the teachers for another day. The science teacher in particular was so excited he couldn't ...
Spirit Science 15 - Power of the Heart
As science looks more and more at the human body with greater technology, we have begun to come full circle in understanding what the ancients knew about the heart, the brain, and divine consciousness. What is the heart? Is it more than just a pump for blood? Or could the truth about its power be related to the essence of your entire being, and have a field of energy so great that it can transform not just your own being into that of light, love and happiness, but even those around you. What is the shining light of the heart, and how can you access it and gain the inner knowing of who you are and why you are here? Produced by Spirit Science Animated by Spirit Patch Colouring by The Atlantis King Music by Oliver Gregory, Jahon Mikal, Tilkanauts, and Matteo Penna. Thank you so much for sending us music to use in these videos!! This video was produced out of love for you and the entire human species, please help us share it with as many people as possible to maximize human ascension and get the information to as many people as possible :) Namaste, we love you with the full essence of our hearts!
Khan Academy and the Effectiveness of Science Videos
My PhD: www.physics.usyd.edu.au It is a common view that "if only someone could break this down and explain it clearly enough, more students would understand." Khan Academy is a great example of this approach with its clear, concise videos on science. However it is debatable whether they really work. Research has shown that these types of videos may be positively received by students. They feel like they are learning and become more confident in their answers, but tests reveal they haven't learned anything. The apparent reason for the discrepancy is misconceptions. Students have existing ideas about scientific phenomena before viewing a video. If the video presents scientific concepts in a clear, well illustrated way, students believe they are learning but they do not engage with the media on a deep enough level to realize that what was is presented differs from their prior knowledge. There is hope, however. Presenting students' common misconceptions in a video alongside the scientific concepts has been shown to increase learning by increasing the amount of mental effort students expend while watching it.
