London received a striking visitor today as the worlds newly-crowned tallest man, Turkish Sultan Kösen (26) who measures a staggering 8 ft 1 in (246.5 cm), toured the city in celebration of the launch of Guinness World Records 2010 edition (published 17th of September). Earlier this year, Guinness World Records Editor-in-Chief, Craig Glenday, travelled to Turkey to personally validate the claim of Kösen under strict Guinness World Records guidelines, which stipulate that the claimant must be measured three times in one day. The average of the measurements is the definitive height as it is medically proven that the body expands and shrinks throughout the day. To Glendays surprise, he discovered that Kösen also has the worlds largest hands and largest feet measuring 27.5 cm and 36.5 cm, respectively, making him a triple record holder. Kösen is also the first person in more than a decade to officially measure over 8 ft in height. He takes the record title from Chinas Bao Xi Shun (7 ft 8.95 in), after Ukrainian Leonid Stadnyks (8 ft 5.5 in) claim to the title was discredited in 2008 when he refused to be independently measured. Glenday said: We only know of 10 confirmed or reliable cases in history of humans reaching 8 ft or more. Dubai's tallest tower powers off for Earth Hour
The Burj Khalifa can be seen miles away, especially at night when the needle-like structure glitters over downtown Dubai. But the world's tallest man made structure went dark on March 31 to mark Earth Hour a worldwide event that aims to raise awareness on climate change. Amateur footage also captured an unlit Dubai Marina, its skyscrapers casting darkness over the pier. What started off as a one-city event in 2007 in Australia, Earth Hour has swelled into an international environmental campaign organized by the World Wildlife Fund, to increase awareness on climate change by demonstrating against carbon pollution. The premise is simple: people are asked to switch off their non-essential lights for one hour, be it in their homes, offices or landmark structures. While the Pacific island of Samoa kicked off the event, in the city of origin, Sydney's international icons, the Harbour Bridge and Opera House turned off their lights too. West-bound to Asia, Hong Kong's Victoria Harbour went dim, as did the distinctive 2008 Beijing Olympics stadium, the Bird Nest. In Shanghai, people gathered to see the Pearl Tower amongst other skyscrapers in the Chinese industrial hub go dark. Malaysia's Petronas Towers switched its blue radiance off as soon as the clock struck 8:30pm local time to mark Earth Hour. Igor Vovkovinskiy says he's had 16 surgeries in six years to fix problems created by shoes that didn't fit. He's 7 feet, 8 and one-third inches tall with a shoe size somewhere between a 22 and 26. American's tallest man, Vovkovinskiy says his only shoes have no traction, making it 'suicidal' to leave his home. 'I haven't been able to go for a joyful walk for six years now,' said Vovkovinskiy 'I look forward to just going for a walk with my dog, just walking around the neighborhood.' Vovkovinskiy traveled to Reebok headquarters in Canton on Thursday for a complex shoe-fitting that involved, among other things, custom pressure-mounting equipment, bio-foam, a device that takes precise measurements of length, a tape measure and a handful of technicians.

Queen's horse Digger, Britain's tallest, is being put through his paces with the royal regiment. Stationed with the Household Cavalry in Hyde Park Barracks, it is hoped 145 stone horse will take part in the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations as a Drum Horse in June. With his head up strapping eight-year-old Digger measures close to 9ft and his hooves measure 15in across. He eats up to four stones of food per day and guzzles 25 gallons of water. Princes William and Harry are also serving members of the Household Cavalry Regiment as Blue and Royal Officers. In this video, the latest from construction on Europe's tallest rollercoaster, Shambhala. The ride stands high above Dragon Khan in the parks Chinese themed area and will feature a mini themed area underneath the ride. The attraction spans over 1650 meters, and requires than 1600 tons of steel for the structure. The parks used over 4000 square metres of concrete for foundations which at some points reaches 18 meters. • The attraction will beat three European records: 1. Tallest rollercoaster in Europe (76 meters) 2. Roller coaster with the longest drop in Europe (78 meters) 3. Fastest European Hypercoaster, it will reach 134 km / h on the first descent. • Shambhala features 5 camelbacks (elevation during the ride), the lowest of which has a height equivalent to a 7-storey building. Malee Duangdee, 19, with Khagendra Thapa Magar, 18, the world's shortest man. Towering head and shoulders above her own parents this giant teenager is the tallest in the world. Standing at whopping 6ft 10ins (212 cm), Malee Duangdee could still be growing. Weighing 20.5 stone the 19-year-old from eastern Thailand has suffered painful school memories of bullies and a lifetime of loneliness. Malee was diagnosed with a brain tumour, which was pressing on a nerve causing a hormone imbalance. Malee has also lost the sight in her eyes as a result. Malee needs an injection every three months to control the benign brain tumour and stop her from growing. But itÕs costing the family almost 2000 GBP a time. For the time being Malee's condition appears to be under control and her life has turned around. Malee was in The Guinness Book of World Records as the tallest girl in January, 2009. And not even the Brazilian Elisany Silva, 16, has knocked her off the spot as she only measures 6ft 9ins (206cm) tall.

Self Proclaimed 'Spider-Man' Climbs France's Tallest Tower with His Bare Hands
A self-styled French 'Spiderman' who has made a name for himself by climbing some of the world's tallest buildings without permission made something of a career first on Thursday (May 10) by ascending the tallest skyscraper in France with the permission of its owners. Instead of being arrested and carted off at the top of First tower, Alain Robert was greeted by well-wishers and supporters. He reached the top of the 231-metre-high tower after roughly 1-1/2 hours of ascent using nothing but his bare hands and some talcum powder. Robert, who has climbed over 100 buildings including the New York Times building in New Yorkand Burj al Khalifa in Dubai, describes his occupation as the 'best job in the world'. But he says he is scared of heights. "I knew for sure that I was going to do it. Whether it's a good quality to have or not, I know that nothing's going to stop me. Sometimes I was even afraid for myself, because I know no matter (what), I will be doing the ascent and I did it," an elated Robert told Reuters after he took the lift back down. Instead of being dragged off by irate policemen, Robert was greeted with a cocktail party at ground level.

Hendrik Meurkens is the tallest Jazz harmonica player in the world. German-born but now based in New York, Meurkens' recordings and performances garner worldwide acclaim because the transcendent beauty of his music has universal appeal. A two-mallet player in the tradition of Milt Jackson and Bobby Hutcherson, Hendrik Meurkens was en-route to being an instantly recognizable vibraphonist when he heard Toots Thielemans. Inspired by the sound of Thielemans' harmonica, he taught himself the difficult-to-master instrument. Hendrik Meurkens' other life-changing musical experience was his introduction to samba and bossa nova. He was so moved by Brazilian music that after perfecting his unique musical voice at Berklee, as a vibraphone major, he moved to Rio in the early 80s to totally immerse himself in music and culture of Brazil. A regular Monday night gig at the popular Rio club, Bar 21, soon demonstrated his acceptance by Brazilian musicians. Meurkens' poignant, emotionally affecting harmonica proved to be a sound that Brazilians strongly embraced, and during his Rio days, he met many musicians who later became collaborators in both Europe and New York. Back in Germany by '83, he became a respected studio musician, recording with European Radio Orchestras and leading his own groups, as well as accompanying visiting legends like Harry 'Sweets' Edison and Buddy Tate.
