SIG 522: "Tactical .22 Done Right" by Nutnfancy
Imagine a Tactical .22 carbine that will feed pretty much whatever rounds you throw in it. If it seems far fetched then you must have some trigger time of similar .22s that will occasionally jam and bobble unless fed a high impulse round like CCI Mini Mags, which are more expensive. The Sig 522 achieved amazing reliability in the Nutnfancy testing regime with several brands and types of rounds...not one jam in over 2000 rounds fired! And most of those rounds were low quality Federal WalMart HP ammo that gives my other tested guns fits...including the CMMG AR-15 conversion. This ability to take regular quality .22 ammo makes the 522 very cheap to shoot. This stellar reliability is contained within an original and cool rifle design that mimics the Sig 550/556 Classic lines and is often mistaken as such (the fake gas block adjustment is another nice touch). Its forend is trim and ergonomic and can be accessorized with useful railing for light and VG attachment (highly recommended for tactical practice). The barrel profile is perfect for a .22 and is topped off by a standard AR-15 threaded flash suppressor...outstanding. This means the Sig 522 can readily accept a suppressor. The receive is stout, milled from 7075 aluminum and when mated with the precision bolt is one reason the gun is so reliable: the bolt rides precisely in a milled aluminum channel. Quark AA2 Tactical flashlight: Pack Leader
4Sevens continues to be a standard setter in the world of high performance, multi-mode portable lighting products. A great representation of this is the Quark AA2 Tactical light reviewed here. It has an amazingly clean beam that throws very efficiently (and far for an AA torch) and kills the competition in terms of cleaniness, lack of artifacts, and concentricity. It is effective to about 50 (maybe 75) yards when detailed indentification is needed. Put that beam in a durable 6061 aluminum body that wears a Type III hard anodizing that features IPX-8 waterproofing. Proven in my own extensive water testing, I found the Quark AA2 Tactical to be extremely waterproof with no failures noted (even in open water testing to about 25 feet). Weight on the AA2 Tactical will vary from a very light 3.2 ounces to 4.0 ounces depending on the type of cells. It is extremely portable and will fit into just about any POU. The Quark AA and 123 series utilize a common emitter head and tailcaps which also can be interchanged with each other (and ordered separately) to create your own lights...very cool. Burn times and brightness levels achieve excellent capability for the utilized emitter heads (XP-E R2 LED version reviewed and tested, XP-G R5 version referenced and current as of Mar 2010): Moonlight mode @ 0.2 lumes for 30 days, Low @ 3.5 lumens for 5 days, Med @ 18 lumens, High @ 70 lumens for 5 hrs, Max @ 170 lumens (R2 version, 206 lumens R5 version) for 1.3 hours (2.5 hours R5), Beacon ...
Ruger Mini-14 Tactical: "Arrival of the Underdog" by Nutnfancy
It's built like a tank and costs around $650 in 2010. That's the high value of the now-improved Mini-14 "Tactical" offers. Model #5847 is reviewed here but its representative of the whole Ruger Mini-14 Tactical and Ranch rifle lineup. Some will discount the Mini as a viable tactical choice, saying that it is wildly inaccurate and cannot be depended upon for hard use. The accuracy criticisms held some truth as the older Mini-14s (and their poor quality, pencil-thin barrels) often had heat-stringing issues and about 4-7 MOA accuracy (with rack-grade ammunition). In this thorough Nutnfancy review of Mini-14 Tactical model (and NRA Model providing more data points), I cut through this chaff and attempt to get to the truth. Fact is, with factory Ruger mags or other high quality options (discussed), the fixed-piston Mini-14 is has been a durable and ultra-reliable rifle (when used with good mags), proven in my own shooting since 1983. Based on the battle-proven M1 Garand action, the rotating open bolt design is tolerant of mud, water, and dust and keeps shucking, often when other gun systems have shut down in tough conditions. But a main focus of this review is not the long-established reliability but the improvements made on the 580 Series of Minis since 2004, particularly BARREL IMPROVEMENTS. Mobile / Tactical High Energy Laser (M-THEL) Technology Demonstration Program Developer: Northrop Grumman Corp. The fixed-site version Advanced Concept Technology Demonstration (ACTD) Tactical High Energy Laser (THEL) THEL, was developed by TRW Inc. under a $89 million contract. During several tests in the USA, the system has shot down 25 Katyusha rockets, but has not been deployed. The system also known as Nautilus, has not progressed much since the end of the demonstration program, since the lack of mobility and the fixed base limitations of the system made in insufficient to counter long range rockets currently employed by Hezbulla at the Israeli northern border with Lebanon. While Katyusha rockets had a range of 20 kilometers, and could hit only a few urban targets, the long range rockets have a range of 70 kilometers and can hit strategic facilities and large urban areas in the Haifa bay. A laser-based defense against such weapons must rely on more systems, which could be rapidly mobilized to protect a much larger area. Such design is currently being implemented under the MTHEL program. Similar threats could face US contingencies in other parts of the world. This requirement is driving the need for an air-mobile version of the beam weapon. Tactical Solutions .22 Testing in Snow, Pt 1 by Nutnfancy
Join The Nutnfancy Project up in Boise, Idaho as we touch base with Tactical Solutions and crew. For years they have made some the coolest and most useful modifications to Ruger and Browning .22s: the Pac-Lite and Trail-Lite receiver barrels and the X-Ring .22 barrels for 10/22s. The TacSol barrels transform these guns into super lightweight and good looking guns with perhaps a tactical flavor. The threaded barrels help too, prepping the gun for either the TacSol proprietary compensator or a suppressor (perhaps their own Cascade design), both useful in many POUs. Produced in some wicked colors, PFIDude and myself check out the production and finished products of these and some other newer TacSol products here. Kinda' like their new full size Glock TSG-22 .22 conversion slide (milled out of 4140 steel), the 2211 .22 1911 conversions, AR-22s, and X-Ring 10/22 receivers. Of course while we kid around along the way, I make sure we hit the key points of the designs and make some honest observations where appropriate.
