Wonderful performance by Joan Sutherland, still in great vocal shape. She sings both the high Db in the cavatina and the low Ab in the cabaletta. Her coloratura and her trill as stupendous.

Renata Tebaldi - Il Trovatore - Tacea La Notte Placida - Verdi - Live 1966

Maria Callas: Tacea la Notte Placida... Di Tale Amor (Live in Naples, 1951)

Maria Callas performing the arias Tacea La Notte Placida and Di Tale Amor, from Verdi's Il Trovatore, live in Naples in 1951 under the baton of Tullio Serafin. This recording is from the Gli Anni D'oro Collection (Vol. I, 1951-1953) of live Maria Callas opera recordings. I find her voice to be in fine form here, with no sign of the wobble that was later introduced into her higher register. I'm just amazed by the control she has over her voice! Everything is exactly as she wants it to be. She is phenomenal. I'm going to be uploading exerpts from live Callas recordings of Il Trovatore, I Puritani, Armida, Norma and Medea all recorded between 1951 and 1953. Hope you enjoy, and let me know if you have any aria/duet/ensemble requests!

Hina Spani - Tacea la notte placida (1929) - Lyrics/Translation

The "nocturne" from Verdi's Trovatore, accompanied by the Orchestra del Teatro alla Scala, conducted by Carlo Sabajno. Great is the word! Hina Spani (1896-1969) is absolutely wonderful here - the intensity, the power held in restraint until the climax, the ability to produce extraordinary pianissimi, so evident in "sì muto", and at the end - simply magnificent. Not to mention the joy that she communicates... Gioia provai che agli angeli Solo è provar concesso!... ------------------------------------- "Hina Spani (15 February 1896 - 11 July 1969) was an Argentine soprano. Her real name was Higinia Tuñón and she enjoyed a major opera career centred on Italy during the 1920s and '30s. Spani was born in Puán, Province of Buenos Aires ( ... ) She made her operatic début at La Scala, Milan, in 1915, in the secondary rôle of Anna in Alfredo Catalani's La Wally. rosa ponselle tacea la notte placida.tributeonher113birthday

The voice Rosa Ponselle's voice was one of extraordinary beauty and voluptuousness. In its richness and depth, it has been compared by commentators at various times to port wine, maroon velvet and dark chocolate. Luciano Pavarotti, who visited Villa Pace and vocalized with Ponselle when she was nearly 80 years old, likened her still-intact voice to "the color of amber." The voice was absolutely even in its scale, from top to bottom, with all vocal registers seamlessly integrated and no audible changes of gear. Her legato singing was exemplary. She could sing at all dynamic levels, from a powerful forte to a gossamer pianissimo that carried to all corners of the opera house, and she could execute a perfect messa di voce in all parts of her range. In her early years, she had a two-octave range from low C to high C. She possessed an exceptionally rich and mellow middle and lower register. In weight and caliber Ponselle's voice was a true dramatic coloratura soprano, capable of encompassing all the demands of roles like La Gioconda and Norma. Added to the above, Ponselle was a sensitive musician and an imaginative interpreter. She was a quick study and could sight-read with accuracy. She possessed an excellent sense of rhythm. She was a convincing and intense actress, at times (in the opinion of some critics) pushing drama and intensity past the bounds of good taste. One can hear something of this in the denunciation scene in a 1935 performance of La traviata, during which ...

Renata Tebaldi at Carnegie Hall, 1957 - Tacea la notte placida...Di tale amor

Carnegie Hall - New York, April 3rd, 1957 , concerto benefico, direttore Dimitri Mitropoulos, con The Philarminic Symphony Orchestra. I've never heard Leonora's opening aria from Il Trovatore sung with more passion. Tebaldi has so far been the only soprano to my ears who sounded truly in love with Manrico. She even surpasses her own earlier recordings in this live performance. Maybe it was the special relationship she had with the great maestro Mitropoulos that brought out the best of her like in all their performances together. Vocally she's in splendid form, notice the amazingly easy crescendo she does in many phrases without spreading the voice or how she always sings all those vowels and consonants clearly and crisply. This Leonora loves every word she sings! The sound is only average but warm and clearn enough to enjoy this great scene at Carnegie Hall.

Joan Sutherland - Tacea la notte / Di tale amor (Score Animation)

This is a mini-Assoluta role, requiring all the range and bifurcated tessitura of an Assoluta as well as the agility but without all the heroic coloratura, more like "spinto coloratura" in a sense. I love Joan's recording of it as she encompasses both the high D-flat in the cadenza at the end of "Tacea la notte placida" and the low A-flat in the cadenza during the cabaletta. Something you will notice is that at some point before the cadenza in the cabaletta the score goes blank, I put that because Joan and Richard Bonynge inserted some measures of coloratura that do not appear in the score.

Her highly successful Metropolitan Opera debut in 2004 sparked a media excitement with reviews from The New York Times: "At last an Aida," the Associated Press: "she combines a potent, dusky lower register with a striking ability to spin out soft high notes of shimmering beauty. There's no doubt her voice is powerful enough for Verdi," CBS Evening News: "the future of opera has arrived," and features on the front page of The New York Times and in Oprah Magazine, Essence Magazine, Ebony Magazine, Classical Singer, Reader's Digest, and Psychology Today. In fall 2009, Angela received the Governor's Arts Award from the Governor of Indiana, a Spirit of the Prairie Award from Conner Prairie in Indiana, and was inducted into the Indianapolis Public Schools Hall of Fame.

Callas - BJR102 - Il Trovatore, Mexico 1950 - Tacea la notte placida...Di Tale Amor

Improved audio! I bought a bottle of Record Revirginizer and cleaned this LP with excellent results, it removed all the excess noise. Regarding the audio - this is an exact rip of the BJR LP, i think it plays a little fast (either that or every other copy of this performance i've heard has been slowed down) - when i slowed it by about 5% it matched the melodram version i have. But in the interest of representing the BJR label as is, i've left it at original speed.
