We forge out the tang (handle) of the sword and we draw out the blade to make it longer without making it any wider. About the Steel I use. I am using 01 steel which is great for knives but is just ok for swords. If you have a choice of steels I recommend you go with 5160. You can also use the leaf spring from a car. Can get it at a junk yard. This is usually 5160.
