Alex Ohan; Swaziland Reed Dance -

Umhlanga, or Reed Dance ceremony, is an annual Swazi and Zulu tradition held in August or September of each year. Tens of thousands of unmarried and childless Swazi/Zulu girls and women travel from their villages to participate in the eight-day event. In Swaziland they gather at the Queen Mother's royal village, which currently is Ludzidzini Royal Village, while Nongoma is the site of the royal reed dance in Zululand. After arriving at the Queen Mother's royal residence, or Enyokeni Palace in Zululand, the women disperse the following night to surrounding areas and cut tall reeds. The following night they bundle them together and bring them back to the Queen Mother to be used in repairing holes in the reed windscreen surrounding the royal village. After a day of rest and washing the women prepare their traditional costumes consisting of a bead necklace, rattling anklets made from cocoons, a sash, and skirt. Many of them carry the bush knife they used to cut the reeds as a symbol of their virginity. Today's Reed Dance ceremony developed in the 1940's and 50's from the Umcwasho custom where young girls were placed in age regiments to ensure their virginity. Once they reached the age of marriage they would perform labor for the Queen Mother followed by dancing and a feast. The official purpose of the annual ceremony is to preserve the women's chastity, provide tribute labor for the Queen Mother, and produce solidarity among the women through working together. The women sing ...

Swaziland

I go to school in the nation's capital, Mbabane, at the Waterford Kamhlaba United World College of Southern Africa. Being in such a different place - a country ruled entirely by a king - has been an amazing experience so far. This video, parts of which were aired on CNN International in May of 2009, shows, without any commentary, what I have been seeing.

Swaziland Salgaocar Parachute Display

On 9th March, 2012 the Aerial FX Team flew to The Ngwenya Mine, one of the oldest mines in the world, for one of Africa's largest budget demonstration jumps. The event was for the launch of the Salgaocar Swaziland railway line and ore trains that will link The Kingdom of Swaziland with Maputo. The choreographed display consisted of freefall smoke and a bomb-burst formation, into a Canopy Formation stack, with 8 Swazi flag-coloured smoke canisters being dropped either side of the stack. The Canopy Formation broke into a spiraling colour pinwheel with the Swaziland National Flag and the SALGAOCAR banner being dropped and flown. Swaziland's health services affected by economic crisis

Swaziland's healthcare is under added threat due to an economic crisis in the country. Swazi adults have the highest rate of HIV infections in the world. One in every four adults are infected. But now Swaziland cannot afford to meet the cost of its medical expenses. HIV-infected patients have consequently been limited to just a month's supply of HIV medication, Antiretrovirals, instead of the three-month treatment that they previously received. Other health and medical treatments have also been interrupted. Al Jazeera's Tania Page reports from Swaziland.

With Global Fund support, Swaziland has virtually eliminated malaria as a public health risk. Using GPS tracking technology, experts can now track new cases or outbreaks whilst plotting interventions. This integrated approach, combined with rapid testing and effective treatment, has made a real impact against a disease which once killed thousands of people every year.

Kudvumisa Foundation's CHIPS Program in Swaziland

Caregivers and by default their children living in rural Swaziland do not have the resources to access HIV/AIDS related interventions. CHIPS (Children's HIV Intervention Programme in Swaziland) was organized to identify children and/or caregivers in need of testing and to begin the process of counseling, testing, drawing blood for CD4 and blood chemistry, and providing transport for access to the health system in Swaziland. CHIPS provides long term health care management for CHIPS clients to ensure adherence and ability to obtain ART Refills. CHIPS future goals are threefold: to initially expand the local delivery of HIV related care to everyone in the target communities, to provide quality and compassionate local long term care to a stable HIV population, and ultimately to provide quality and compassionate local health care to the entire population regardless of HIV status. A fourth goal closely linked to battling HIV and malnutrition is to provide education and economic training to enable the impoverished people of this area to develop profitable businesses and skills.
