Surf Dog Ricochet - "An extra-ordinary miracle" fundraiser
Ricochet is raising awareness & funds for Finnley who was born with brain damage, and not expected to live for more than 72 hours. She is a miracle, and is now 2 1/2 years old! Her brain damage left her with cerebral palsy, seizures, and vision impairment. She's not able to walk or not at this time, but loves classical music. She also adores being in the water. Swimming is very therapeutic for her, but they've been using a community pool, and now want to purchase their own pool so she can get 4-6 hours of therapy a day. Patrick Ivison, an adaptive surfer, and surf dog Ricochet got together to tandem surf at Del Mar beach on Aug 20, 2009 for the first time. Patrick was run over by a car when he was a child, and suffered a spinal cord injury. He has used a wheelchair ever since. Ricochet fundraised to help offset costs of Patrick's physical therapy, and new service dog, and raised more than $10000 for him! And, one of her sponsors, the Rose Foundation awarded a grant that will pay for an additional three years of his therapy! DCX surf school is located on the island of Oahu in Hawaii. Oahu has some of the best surf in the world, and Waikiki is definitely the best place to take surf lessons in Hawaii. (Why you might ask). Surf in Waikiki on average is 1 to 2 feet, and nice rolling waves that can give you nice long 100-yard rides. We offer surf lessons from beginner to advance, and surf on small friendly waves. The Surfing USA culture was born. Today, when the best California surfers just happen to be canine lovers, they bring their dogs along for the ride. Every June, Loews Coronado Bay Resort in San Diego hosts its annual surfing dog competition, which draws seabound hounds and thousands of adoring fans from around the nation. The event takes place at Imperial Beach, a dog-friendly stretch of sand just about 5 miles north of Mexico. It's a dog-eat-dog competition, with only the best surfers taking home the prize. No dog paddling allowed! Heats are divided up into three categories Under 40 pounds, over 40 pounds and tandem surfing for dogs and their owners. These hot dogs have three waves to impress the judges and are scored on confidence level, length of ride and, of course, a bit of moxy. Want to get in on the action?
