Wear Sunscreen or the Sunscreen Speech are the common names of an essay actually called "Advice, like youth, probably just wasted on the young" written by Mary Schmich and published in the Chicago Tribune as a column in 1997. The most popular and well-known form of the essay is the successful music single released in 1999, credited to Baz Luhrmann. Mary Schmich's "Advice, like youth, probably just wasted on the young" was published in the Chicago Tribune as a column on June 1, 1997. In her introduction to the column, she described it as the commencement address she would give if she were asked to give one. The column soon became the subject of an urban legend, in which it was alleged to be an MIT commencement speech given by author Kurt Vonnegut in that same year (in truth, MIT's commencement speaker that year was Kofi Annan). Despite a follow-up article by Mary Schmich on August 3, 1997, in which she referred to the "lawless swamp of cyberspace" that had made her and Kurt Vonnegut "one", by 1999 the falsely attributed story was widespread. When the column was later turned into a song, Schmich's "wish" came true when the ...

Story on dangers of nano-sunscreens on Today Tonight (January 3, 2012)

In interviews for this report on Today Tonight (Jan 3, 2012), health experts and Friends of the Earth nanotechnology campaigner (Dr. Gregory Crocetti) question the need for nano-ingredients in sunscreens. "With nano-particles, rather than reflecting the ultraviolet light, they actually absorb it, and from absorbing that ultraviolet light, they produce free radicals at the surface of the nano-particle. And that could be a mechanism by which skin cancer could be produced," dermatologist Dr Robert Salmon said. Cancer Council NSW CEO Dr Andrew Penman adds "They are simply not necessary for sunscreen effect. They don't add to the sunscreen quality." Dr. Salmon also warns that certain people are more at risk when wearing nano-sunscreens: "Anyone that has a decreased barrier function in the skin, nano-particles penetrate further. They'll be people such as those that develop eczema, patients that are on certain treatments for acne." Also more vulnerable are outdoor workers and young children who wear nano-sunscreens every day. "Some of the studies show that with lots of flexion and movement around the joints, these nano-particles may penetrate further" he said. Recent polling of over 1300 people commissioned by Friends of the Earth Australia and carried out by The Australia Institute reveals that 85% of Australians want nano-ingredients labelled in sunscreens. "With 85 per cent of Australians wanting labelling, why is the Government sitting on its hands and doing nothing?" asks ...

The Truth about Sunscreens

Sunscreen chemicals are hazardous to our health and the environment. After 40 years of use, the incidences of melanoma and skin cancers have continually climbed rather than being reduced as they have been promoted to do. Dr. Plourde presents highlights from her book Sunscreens -- Biohazard: Treat as Hazardous Waste. Pervasive use has led to these chemicals now being found in the 97% Americans' blood streams even in 90% of those who claim to never have used them. The result is that sunscreen chemicals are now found in the lakes, rivers, and oceans of the world, leading to plankton and coral death. Potent hormones, mice demonstrate both general and reproductive problems, and fish exposed to them become what researchers term "intersex", as well as identified to be accumulating in larger species up the food chain. Passing through the blood-brain barrier, as well a through the placenta, they are capable of killing brain cells and causing DNA deletions in mice offspring. The book includes an entire chapter on the antioxidants that have been proven to protect the skin from solar radiation, allowing chemical-free safe time in the sun. This presentation was recorded at the Doctors Symposium at the 2011 Cancer Control Society Convention in Los Angeles. The slides shown were taken from Dr. Plourde's book: Sunscreens -- Biohazard: Treat as Hazardous Waste.

Baz Luhrmann - Everybody's Free ( to wear sunscreen)

Ladies and Gentlemen of the class of '99 If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience...I will dispense this advice now. Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth; oh nevermind; you will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until they have faded. But trust me, in 20 years you'll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can't grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked....You're not as fat as you imagine. Don't worry about the future; or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubblegum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind; the kind that blindside you at 4pm on some idle Tuesday. Do one thing everyday that scares you Sing Don't be reckless with other people's hearts, don't put up with people who are reckless with yours. Floss Don't waste your time on jealousy; sometimes you're ahead, sometimes you're behind...the race is long, and in the end, it's only with yourself. Remember the compliments you receive, forget the insults; if you succeed in doing this, tell me how. Keep your old love letters, throw away your old bank statements. Stretch Don't feel guilty if you don't know what you want to do with your life...the most ...

How to make your own sunscreen

www.hardlotion.com Renee from MadeOn shows you how to make your own sunscreen using natural ingredients: coconut oil, grapeseed or almond oil, zinc oxide, shea butter, and beeswax. According to Wikipedia: "When used as an ingredient in sunscreen, zinc oxide sits on the skin's surface ie is not absorbed into the skin, and blocks both UVA (320-400 nm) and UVB (280-320 nm) rays of ultraviolet light. Because zinc oxide (and the other most common physical sunscreen, titanium dioxide) are not absorbed into the skin, they are nonirritating and nonallergenic." The Sunscreen Song Baz Luhrmann (Must Watch - Motivational Song)

Short film based on the hit song by Baz Luhrmann - Everybody's Free to Wear Sunscreen. The words of the Sunscreen Song are taken from a column that appeared in the Chicago Tribune on June 1, 1997 entitled "ADVICE, LIKE YOUTH, PROBABLY JUST WASTED ON THE YOUNG" by staff writer Mary Schmich. Sometime around Thursday, July 31, 1997, Mary's article found it's way onto the internet in the form of an email hoax, claiming to be the 1997 commencement address of Kurt Vonnegut to MIT grads. The real address that year was actually delivered by UN Secretary General Kofi Annan on June 5. You can find it posted on MIT's website. A year later, the email re-circulated claiming to be Kurt's commencement address to the Class of 1998! The email caught the attention of Australian film director Baz Luhrmann, who is best known for two films — "Strictly Ballroom," about competitive dancing, and a 1996 remake of "Romeo and Juliet," starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes. Luhrmann eventually tracked the source of the speech to Schmich, and contacted Chicago Tribune management to buy the rights to the words to turn it into a song. He took Quindon Tarver's "Everybody's Free (to Feel Good)" song, remixed it, and hired Sydney actor Lee Perry to read Schmich's "speech". The end result became the seven-minute long "Sunscreen Song". The song received heavy airplay from American radio stations nationwide after KNRK in Portland aired an edited (about 4 1/2 minute) version in the spring of 1999 ...

It's been 10 years since this song was released, I've never really gotten sick of it, and I guess wanted to share how I lived it out. I'm not trying to tell everyone to do everything possible, but rather inspire people to live more freely - and that you can start today by doing something simple, such as dancing in your living room! How to Choose the Right Sunscreen

First and foremost, it's better to use some sunscreen (even if it's not the right one) than no sunscreen at all. But if you have a choice, should you use one with "broad spectrum" protection? What's the difference between UV-A and UV-B? Dr. Schultz will explain what the key terms on sunscreen labels mean and how to determine which sunscreen is right for you. Transcription: In this segment of DermTV.com, I'm going to help you choose the correct sunscreen to protect your skin. Why do you need sunscreen? Because the only way you can get premature lines, wrinkles or age spots on your skin is by exposing it to the sun without adequate protection. And the lack of that same adequate protection is what causes skin cancer. Unfortunately, one American dies every hour in the United States from skin cancer. The good news is that it is a completely preventable disease. All you have to do is choose and use the correct sunscreen. The criteria for the correct sunscreen are: it needs to be strong enough; it needs to feel good when you put it on so you'll be inclined to re-apply it, which is very important; and it has to be compatible with your facial skin type. What is strong enough? Two parts to that answer because there are two parts to the damaging rays of the sun. The UVA or ultraviolet A rays cause aging and skin cancer. To choose a sunscreen that will give you protection from that, choose one that's marked simply with UVA protection or with broad-spectrum protection. For the UVB or ...
