Death and Taxes - Fame Festival 2010
Another street installation from Fame Festival in Italy. This one had a miniature speaker and mp3 player hidden inside the cigarette box, playing sounds of coughing. Angelo (founder of Fame Festival) and I filmed reactions to the installation as people passed by. We would have liked to have shot more, but it was right before a big festival at the church (right behind where we placed the installation) and they kept ringing the church bells. And then the brass band started up. I think that is why every parent tries to shoo their child away - "Come on, get to church!"

Serata finale del Fame Festival. Per il terzo anno consecutivo va in scena a Grottaglie, in provincia di Taranto, il Fame Festival, organizzato da Angelo Milano di Studio Cromie. Tutto era cominciato come un gioco, portare in Puglia a lavorare nel corso dell'estate i migliori street artist a livello internazionale ed organizzare un'apertura ufficiale per settembre. Oggi il Fame è una realtà conosciuta ed apprezzata in tutto il mondo perché gli spazi a disposizione ed il paesaggio di Grottaglie sono davvero unici. Al contempo, la selezione degli artisti avviene esclusivamente per invito e non segue nessun 'diktat' di moda o stile. In quest'angolo d'Italia si ha davvero fame di creatività e soprattutto si ha bisogno dell'aiuto dell'arte per coinvolgere attivamente le persone, renderle consapevoli riguardo i pericoli che incombono su di loro e le possibilità di una crescita a livello culturale. Qui si fa politica intesa come 'interesse di molti', difesa del patrimonio comune, che vuol dire soprattutto difesa dell'ambiente, dell'aria e del suolo che calpestiamo. Forse l'arte ci può aiutare a denunciare gli sprechi e le scelleratezze che governanti e faccendieri perpetrano ogni giorno e riflettendo su tutto ciò che è inequo e insostenibile possiamo pensare ad un'alternativa a livello culturale. Così è sceso giù in Puglia Blu, che l'altr'anno al fame aveva dato un'eccezionale prova della propria genialità, inventando insieme a Dave Ellis quel capolavoro di video-live-painting ...
