'Cop brutality fuels fire of student anger in Canada'
160 protests within just two months - and Canada's student uprising continues unabated. And, with new clashes on Thursday night, the standoff over tuition fee hikes is turning increasingly violent. Centering on the country's second largest city of Montreal, clashes resumed after talks collapsed between student leaders and authorities. Riot officers charged, maced and detained dozens of protesters, while the police chief publicly complained that his forces were worn out. The students are incensed over a tuition fees rise which the government says is necessary. But journalist Bernard Desgagne, says heavy-handed policing will only provoke the students further. Students tear-gassed in clashes with police in Canada
In Canada, riot police used tear gas and stun grenades to disperse hundreds of students protesting outside a government building in central Montreal. At least two demonstrators and two officers were injured in the violence and seventeen people were arrested. Students are angry at a planned 75 percent rise in tuition fees. They've been demonstrating almost daily since declaring a boycott on classes over two months ago, with the government refusing to back down. Citizen journalist Bernard Desgagne says that the situation is getting more violent and that the police reaction towards protesters is too brutal. Montreal students occupy University of Quebec
the video courtesy MontrealManif www.youtube.com The Quebec government announced it would suspend the current semester for many college and university students after around one hundred protesters marched through the hallways of the Université du Québec in Montreal Wednesday morning expressing their anger over the rise of the tution fees. The striking students forced the cancellation of some classes. Some protesters broke into the classrooms and grabbed the students by an arm telling them to get out. None of the protesters reportedly were carrying guns, neither anyone has been arrested. The several weeks long stand-off has created considerable social disorder. Via Mike Riggs at Reason.com: "23-year-old Daniel Chong sat down with NBC San Diego to recount the five days he spent handcuffed in a DEA holding cell without food or water after he was arrested at a "4/20 party." During that period, Chong, a student at UC San Diego, was forced to drink his own urine because his cries for help, for water, and for food went ignored, or perhaps unheard, by DEA agents. Toxic, Smoking Barrel Washes Ashore in FL; Students and Teachers Fall ill - May 17, 2012
sheilaaliens.net Hollywood, FL - This NBC article suggests that those who were affected at the school (May 16) were simply experiencing mass hysteria and/or mass FAKING it so they could get out of class. Right, the teachers too? "Two teachers and 13 students wore blue covers and rode a special county bus to Hollywood Memorial Regional Hospital where they were inspected by crews in Hazmat suits before being treated and released Wednesday. Hospital officials checked the teachers and students in the parking lot to make sure they weren't carrying contaminants, before allowing them into the emergency room. Valarie Campbell, a ninth grader, watched things unfold inside her second-floor classroom, Room 944. Campbell blames a few mosquitoes for causing the uproar that drew police, firefighters, and Hazmat crews. Some students "just wanted to get out of class," she said. They started scratching, she added, but noted that her teacher had red marks from bug bites. School leaders have not officially identified the cause of the skin irritations and authorities say they may never know what caused the disturbance. "You have symptoms that obviously manifested themselves and for an undetermined cause," Hollywood Fire Chief Joel Medina said. "We can't explain why there would be an irritant, especially isolated." School officials had the campus cleaned before students returned Thursday. Though they said the hallways are safe for students, some reluctantly returned to class. "I don't want to ...

Teacher Screams at Student for Disrespecting Obama! Free Speech!
"Didn't Obama bully somebody, though?" The teacher started to get angry and said: "Not to my knowledge." A couple of students relayed the story about Obama admitting that he bullied someone when he was younger. And that seemed to light the fuse on his teacher's anger. A couple of the students exchanged words with the angry teacher. "Stop! Stop! Because there's no comparison. He's running for president. Obama is the president." As one student attempted to argue for a fair, two-sided debate on the history of the candidates, he was shouted down and talked over by the teacher. She continued: "You got to realize, this man is wanting to be what Obama is. There's no comparison." Once again, the students pressed for equal discussion of the histories of both men, with one saying: "If you're gonna talk trash about one side, you gotta talk trash about the other." The teacher just seemed to dig her heels in deeper and press her defense of Obama telling the defiant teen: "You will not disrespect the president of the United States in this classroom." Again the student persisted and invoked his First Amendment right. "I'll say what I want." The still unidentified teacher read the student her rules...her Obama rules. "Not about him, you won't!" The back and forth continued and the most strident of the two students reminded his teacher that President Bush was constantly treated to negative statements about him while he was in office: "Whenever Bush was president, everybody talked sh-t ...

Black school teacher tells a student he can be arrested for speaking ill of President Obama
SPENCER — After reviewing a video in which a North Rowan High School teacher tells a student he can be arrested for speaking ill of President Barack Obama, the Rowan-Salisbury School System said it can be a learning experience. Meanwhile, an expert on politics at Catawba College says the social studies teacher just doesn't have her facts straight when she insists speaking your mind about a president can get you charged with a criminal offense. Although two students provided the name of the teacher, we are not publishing it because officials within the school system would not confirm her identity and she could not be reached for comment. The video captures audio of the dispute but does not show the teacher or anyone else. It appears to have been shot with a phone or other device as the camera pointed at the ceiling the entire time. Rowan-Salisbury spokeswoman Rita Foil confirmed the teacher is still employed with the district and has not been suspended for disciplinary reasons. One student asks, "Didn't Obama bully someone though?" The teacher responds: "Not to my knowledge." In response to the Romney story, conservatives have recently been pointing to a passage in Obama's book, "Dreams from My Father," in which the president writes that while in grade school he shoved a little girl, the only other black student in his grade, after other students called him her boyfriend. When the student tells the teacher that Obama admitted to bullying a girl in school, the teacher goes ...

$1 Trillion Student Loan Debt Day April 25 2012 NYC 1tday Occupy Student Debt Campaign
Filmed April 25, 2012. A national day of action marking the day US student loan debt topped $1 trillion. Students from NYC schools, and universities rallied at Union Square in solidarity then marched to Wall Street. The Occupy Student Debt Campaign calls for all existing debt to be written-off in the spirit of "jubilee", debt currently crippling generations of students and impacting the national economy. In solidarity, many people wear little red squares "carré rouge" symbolizing people in debt, or simply against debt and austerity measures. At Cooper Union, a solidarity protest brought attention to the administration's plan to charge tuition for graduate students. Two people were arrested at that demonstration; one person was arrested simply being at the wrong place at the wrong time. www.youtube.com The protest featured a puppet of Board of Trustees Chairman Mark Epstein pulling the strings of Cooper Union President Bharucha before Bharucha breaks free to sign a pledge upholding the school's mission statement. Male Student Suspended for Dressing Like Girl - NBC's Shomari Stone Exclusive.
NBC's Shomai Stone Exclusive: A male student was suspended from a southern Maryland school for wearing girls' clothing, and the incident has sparked a big controversy in Calvert County. Warren Evans, an openly bisexual student at Calvert High School, was suspended for violating the school's dress code by wearing a skirt. Evans says the school is discriminating against him and does not believe he violated any dress code. "I don't think so. Why not? It didn't say anywhere in the code of conduct or dress code that says boys can't dress like girls," Evans commented. The school district's dress code policy states schools can regulate dress or even hair lengths. Students at the school told News4's Shomari Stone that female students wear skirts of the same length that Evans wore, but they were not suspended. School officials will not comment on the suspension. They did say the dress code applies to all students, regardless of gender. Some parents agree with school officials, saying it's a distraction for their kids when a boy dresses up like a girl in the classroom. Others simply say it's not appropriate. But Evan's father disagrees stating, "Some people aren't tolerant of that type of thing". Soure: www.nbcwashington.com
