Britain is the latest country to be hit by large-scale strike action over its austerity measures. Schools, hospitals and local government offices have all been hit by a day of action called by unions representing public sector workers in the UK. It's over a government move to reduce their pension entitlement. Al Jazeera's Laurence Lee reports from London.

Palestinian Hunger Strike Ends
Via Reuters: "Most of some 1600 prisoners, a third of the 4800 Palestinians in Israeli jails, began refusing food on April 17 although a few had been fasting much longer - up to 77 days. Their protest centered on demands for more family visits, an end to solitary confinement and an end to so-called "administrative detention", a practice that has drawn international criticism on human rights grounds. Palestinian officials said Egypt had drafted an agreement in Cairo with representatives of the Palestinian prisoners, and that inmates met during the day and had agreed to the terms. There was no immediate word from the prisoners as to whether any had actually ended their strike. An Egyptian official involved in the talks said that under Monday's deal to end the strike, Israel had agreed to end solitary confinement for 19 prisoners and lifted a ban on visits to prisoners by relatives living in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip...".* The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur breaks it down. Rare and Deadly Tornado Near Tokyo - May 6, 2012
sheilaaliens.net "A tornado tore through a city northeast of Japan's capital on Sunday, killing one person, injuring dozens of others and destroying scores of houses. Firefighters and medical teams rushed to the area after the tornado struck Tsukuba city, 60 kilometers (40 miles) from Tokyo. The city is a science center, with dozens of research and academic institutes, but the tornado appeared to mostly hit residential areas. A 14-year-old boy died after being injured by the storm, Tsukuba Medical Center said. More than 30 other people were injured, including at least 10 who were being treated at hospitals, fire officials said. Details of the death and injuries were not immediately available. Public broadcaster NHK showed rows of houses without roofs, apartment complexes with smashed balconies and shattered windows, and tilting telephone poles that could barely stand. It said about 200 homes were damaged. Tokyo Electric Power Co. said 24000 homes were without electricity as lightning added to the storm's damage. US re-starts deadly drone strikes in Pakistan
A US drone attack has killed at least 4 Islamic militants in Pakistan. The missiles, which struck late last night, hit an insurgent compound in North Waziristan, on the Afghan border. This comes just two months after an American air strike killed two dozen Pakistani troops, adding to the already tense relationship between Washington and Islamabad. The White House said the November attack was an error, but Pakistan rejected the findings, saying the strike was deliberate. A 6.0-magnitude earthquake has hit northern Italy, reportedly killing at least six people and injuring 50 others. The quake struck some 36 km northwest of the city of Bologna and was followed by a powerful aftershock. Local officials say one man died in the locality of Bordeno when a warehouse collapsed during the quake. Two others were killed in a cave-in at a ceramics factory in Sant'Agostino di Ferrara.
