11 Second Nissan 240SX SR20DET Dyno Runs

I wanted to get a baseline dyno run in before installing my built motor. This is a completely stock SR20DET with a larger turbo, injectors and supporting mods. Stock cams, stock head gasket, everything inside is OEM. It also has a very poor tune, one other reason why it has low numbers. However, I did manage to run an 11.95 @ 114 MPH with this setup so far...

SR20DET Compressor Surge

Compressor surge is a phenomenon experienced when boost pressure inside the intake tract builds up and has no convenient relief method. This is usually caused from the throttle plate closing quickly. Changing load conditions (off throttle) resulting in varying amounts of exhaust gas can also simulate such conditions. In such a case, the pressure takes the only way out through the turbocharger compressor housing. The unique sound is caused by the pressure charge encountering the spinning compressor wheel on its escape from the engine. Compressor surge goes by many other names such as compressor stall, turbo dose or dosing, pigeon, turbo flutter/chatter and sometimes mistakenly wastegate chatter. The car was thoroughly warmed up before filming. The boost controller has been disabled allowing the car to run directly off wastegate pressure. The body panels have been removed due to a slowly progressing facelift. For more info on my car: www.fizzerkart.com/s14.html Props to Salman, my cousin, for introducing me firsthand to this wonderful, ridiculous phenomenon and also to Quail from sxoc for doing this s**t ages before I did. ;-D

Cirrus SR20 Landing CQX 2-13-10.mov

This video shows the approach and landing on runway 24 at Chatham Municipal Airport (CQX) at Chatham Massachusetts on Cape Cod. It was a very nice winter day with light winds and a high thinning overcast as I flew from Norwood down to Chatham. The flight down was from Norwood to Plymouth (OWD to PYM) and then across a corner of the Cape Cod Bay. This route took me north of the Cape Cod Canal and the airspaces for both the Cape Cod Coast Guard Air Station (FMH) and Barnstable Municipal-Boardman/Polando Field in Hyannis (HYA). This video starts during the approach to the left downwind pattern for runway 24. It was my first time at Chatham and I probably stayed a touch high and fast on the way in, due to the hills, trees and water tanks. Probably could have made some adjustments, but as this was a new airport for me, I think I kept it hot. So as you will see there is a good amount of float on this landing while I burned off some speed. The touchdown was soft and in general it was a nice approach and landing, but as usually plenty to learn from. There are three cameras on this video and I experimented with some different placements. The main nose camera is up near the front window for a wide angle view of final approach. The secondary camera gives a bit of forward view, but is mostly aimed at me and the panel. And the third and smaller camera is looking off the wing. Not sure I would go with this arrangement every time, but its a good option for a change. I placed one elbow ...

Cirrus SR20 OWD to PSM 5-1-11

This video is a real time trip in an SR20 from take-off at Norwood, MA to landing at Portsmouth, NH. It begins as I work through a final checklist before take-off on Runway 10 at OWD. I believe I was taking my time before calling the tower because another plane had just landed but had not cleared the runway... also perhaps because there was no one behind me. I took off on Runway 10, then banked north on my way to Portsmouth or Pease (PSM). On this flight as I do with all my cross-countries, I used Flight Following so you'll get to hear a few hand-offs and a lot of ATC calls. There are also a few traffic warnings along the way which make for some interesting listening. I get cleared through the Hanscom airspace (BED) and then climb a bit and head northeast to PSM. The controller there had some calls that I'd never heard (unique phrases), but it all made sense and the landing was a nice one. I love heading into those large runway airports where the site picture makes everything seem like it's gone into slow motion. There are three HD cameras and ATC audio on this video and I should note that I had my squelch set wrong, so you can't really hear the first hand-off from Norwood to Boston soon after take-off. I eventually adjusted the squelch after just a few minutes, but for the early part of the video I tried to edit around the open mic cockpit noise to minimize the impact. Enjoy!

1JZ 240SX S14 Swap Project - SR20DET out 1JZGTE in

First start up of a Nissan 240SX S14 with a new 1JZ swap. Swap was done by my 18-year old son. He took the old Nissan SR20DET engine out and put a Toyota 1JZGTE engine in. He diligently worked on the swap on and off after school. He completed the swap in about 3 months. He practically did it all by himself with some occasional help from friends. It was not easy. He is very proud of his work, and I am very proud of him. Background: Heading Out To The Highway Artist: Judas Priest

Cirrus SR20 Landing OWD 1-16-10.mov

This video is the return trip from the meet-up at New Bedford in the SR20 on January 16, 2010. Its a short clip starting with the second call-up to the OWD tower two miles out. There are only two cameras in this clip and the audio is not as clear as I would like, but the HD looks good and since I had it recorded, Im sharing it anyway. Also, for some reason there was a constant hum on the tower frequency possibly due to an incorrect squelch setting. I have left the important communications up full, but the rest of the usual cockpit commentary is at a lower volume to minimize that constant static. This landing was better than the firm one earlier that day at EWB, but for some reason I carried some excess power after the roundout. Didnt really notice it at the time, but its clear in the replay. The touchdown was fine but there was probably no need to float as long as I did. As usual, this video is good for me to learn from and hopefully youll get something out of watching it too.

Cirrus SR20 landing 3B0 12-19-09.mov

After about a month of weather delays from late November to early December, I finally managed to get the plane and the weather to cooperate with my schedule. I had planned to meet some friends (flying from the New York area) at Brainard in Connecticut, with me making a stop along the way at Southbridge, MA. When the beginnings of a major storm grounded my friends, I decided to head west anyway and make that stop in Southbridge (3B0) as planned. It would be a new airport for me and one that a friend had recommended for both its proximity to Norwood and its nice little restaurant. I was basically heading due west as I approached 3B0 and the winds were light but out of the north, which favored runway 02. So I stayed to the north and got west of the airport to position for the 45 for the left downwind to 02. This video starts with my call on the 45 and the airport clearly ahead. Again this is a two camera HD shoot with radio comms included. You'll hear some radio from nearby airports using the same frequency, but Southbridge was basically quiet on this day before the snowstorm, so you'll mostly hear me. The landing was fine although I could have held it off a little longer. The pattern was pretty good although you'll hear me mention that I'm a little low just after abeam the numbers which I corrected. Because of the main camera placement on this flight, you should be able to read some of the instruments for altitude and airspeed etc. A nice flight into a nice little airport ...

Cirrus SR20 OWD to SFM 1-23-10.mov

This 10 minute video is edited from a 75nm cross-country I made on Saturday, January 23, 2010 from Norwood, MA to Sanford, ME. I was flying to Sanford (SFM) to visit Jack Hodgson, host of the Uncontrolled Airspace Podcast at his home airport and I had a beautiful day for flying, especially for January in New England. I used flight following for this trip and as you'll hear, I was cleared into Boston's Class Bravo Airspace, direct to Sanford which for me was a solo first! Norwood's position on the southwest side of the Boston bravo has meant that I've mostly flown west and south. Northwest requires some special planning and communications, which is what I was looking for from this trip. The first half of the video is the departure from Norwood (OWD) and the series of ATC hand-offs through the Bravo and up the coast to Maine. I made good time, even with a bit of a headwind. (The return trip I was quite fast.) The last half of the video is the approach and landing at Sanford in more detail. There was a lot to enjoy and learn from this trip and for those of you interested in ATC audio, this one will be particularly interesting. The only thing missing from the sequence is my over-flight of Sanford to get a sense of the airport and let some of the pancake breakfast traffic land ahead of me. I should also mention that the ATC audio during the middle portion of the video has a little more static than I would like, but you can hear what's going on and I have tried to minimize the ...

Cirrus SR20 Landing IJD 12-19-09.mov

The second airport I visited on December 19, 2009 was Windham in Willimantic, CT. I had never landed there before, so this was another first approach for me. The traffic pattern was very busy so I circled a few miles away until things seemed to settle, and then I set-up for the 45 to runway 36. That's where this video starts. It has gotten a bit bumpy by this time, which you will see and hear in the video. Runway 36 is the shorter of the two runways and I had been hoping the winds would be light enough for them to be using the longer runway 9. But they weren't and so I joined the pattern for 36. You will hear a King Air call for runway 9. He landed after I cleared the active, and I had to wait for his landing for my taxi-back. Anyway, it was gusty and so I carried a little extra airspeed on final, but the runway was short so as a result, the landing was a little flat and fast resulting in some nose wheel bounce. Got the plane stopped in plenty of time, and didn't waste any runway, but as I watch this video now, I keep wanting to pull power a few seconds earlier. I think the gusts got to me a bit. Anyway, not perfect but a fun airport to visit and looking at the video, a great learning experience. As with the Southbridge video shot on the same flight, two HD cams and Unicom audio. Obviously the heat was still out on this leg of the flight, which again explains the coat and cool "flying" gloves. Enjoy.

Nissan 200sx S13 SR20DET Night Ride Chill Drift

Just a few "safer" onboard sequences from last nights ride (which some would consider practice). The car is a S13 Nissan 200SX (180sx in japan, fastback version of the Silvia) with a SR20DET Red Top engine. It's currently being built and it doesn't have many upgrades at the moment. The pre-turbo gasket is leaking badly so I'm losing precious spool & boost (only goes from 5000 rpm onwards and 0.4 bar of boost max instead of 0.5 stock). The tires in this video are at the end of their life. Diff is welded, rear subframe collars, custom hard suspension, fmic, 76mm exhaust and CAI. That's about it. Hopefully my next vid will be much nicer. I don't condone such driving on public roads, we just don't have a choice - no tracks here - and if you're going to do it at least do it at 3-4AM so nobody is put at risk. Music is a Lounge/Chill remix of ATB's Behind. Cheers and take care. Octav

This is a short video i have just thrown together with photos and videos of the entire build process of my car. At this stage the car is only running on a run in tune and to date has currently made 181hp on 6.5psi of boost. i will update this once the power tune has been done. the car is running a rebuilt sr20det with a 5 speed transmission using a r32 gtst rear extension housing, running a Microtech LT10S ecu computer with X4 Ignition module, boost is controlled by a Turbosmart eBoost2 and is vented through a Plumb Back Turbosmart BOV to keep the police happy. The car has had a custom bare metal respray with Ford Focus Electric Orange 2pk paint and the finish is straight off the gun and yet to be buffed. 6 Point half cage in the back with sparco fixed back seats in the front paired with g-force 5 point cam lock harnesses to keep everyone safe and sound. Hilux diff conversion in the rear for strength. a 2½" polished stainless mandrel bent exhaust system keeps the exhaust note very streetable but yet still sounds great. This car is a bucket of fun to drive and stay tuned for more videos including possible strip footage... Thanks for watching

Cirrus SR20 Landing EWB 1-16-10.mov

This was my first flight of the new year, from Norwood, MA down to New Bedford (KEWB) and back. It was Saturday, January 16, 2010 and the occasion was a fly-in meet-up of the Northeast Pilots Group (NEPG) for lunch at the Airport Grill restaurant at the New Bedford airport. This video is the approach and landing at New Bedford that day in the SR20, N168SR. I hadn't flown in a month because of weather and the holidays and so a few things were rusty, but for the most part it was a normal flight. I had a data problem with the connection between the GPS and the moving map in the MFD, which corrected itself mid-flight. Other than that, it was a nice day for flying in January and a great meet-up event. The video is a little longer than some of my others because it begins just before my initial call to New Bedford. By this time, the controller had begun to realize that he had a number of in-bound aircraft and you can tell his calls are very tight, wanting to keep the frequency clear. Several other members of the NEPG will hear themselves on the frequency as I make my approach. This video is another making use of three HD cameras and ATC audio communication. It marks the first use of a new Panasonic camera with a wide-angle lens attachment. This camera is the primary nose camera and was mounted again off a suction mount on the rear passenger window. I will be playing with this placement in the future as I got a little too much vibration especially on the runway. The off-wing shot ...

SR20DET NVCS gone bad

These are the sounds a badly worn NVCS sprocked is making in a fully build Nissan SR20DET Black Top engine. NVCS sprocket had aprox 170.000km on it when it started to go from fairly unnoticable to plain bad during a course of about 1500km. It is happening because the rubber seals inside it starts to fail. You could buy a new sprocket which could last next 150.000km, or 15.000km (and the sound is back). There are some reports of people succesfully replacing the rubber seals for cheap fix tho. Even with the sounds the performance of the engine remained the same. NVCS stands for Nissan Variable Cam System. I hope this video will help people with similar problems identify the weird sounds our engines are making from time to time. Other similar sounds may be produced by bad lifters, main bearings, timing chain and the solenoid activating the NVCS. You will find a lot more information about these issues in various forums around the internet. Sorry about the poor mobile phone video quality.

Cirrus SR20 SFZ to OWD 12-5-10

This is the video of the return trip from KSFZ to KOWD from December of 2010. Because it's such a short trip and my video duration on YouTube has been extended, I was able to get the entire trip into one complete video. You'll see the departure from the uncontrolled field, North Central State Airport in Pawtucket, RI; the entire short hop (16 minutes) to Norwood Airport, and the landing there on runway 35 as the sun was getting low in the winter sky. You'll also hear several scratchy calls from N13151, the Cessna 172 I also fly, as it gets into Norwood just ahead of me. Not a lot of action here, but since it was a real full flight, I thought it would be interesting to post this way. There are three HD cameras and full audio on this video.
