Lacing a Rear 32 Spoke Wheel, 3 Cross | How to Build a Bicycle Wheel
In this tutorial we show you how to lace the drive side spokes of a rear bicycle wheel. It's important to remember that on the rear wheel the drive side spokes are slightly shorter than the non-drive side, due to the dish of the wheel. You should also prep your spokes with linseed oil or spoke prep before lacing. When lacing the drive side spokes start at the spoke hole next to the valve stem hole. Make sure it is a hole that is drilled towards the drive side of the hub. Most rims have slightly offset drilling, so the spoke holes will angle slightly toward one side of the rim or the other. When lacing, each set of spokes will be placed every fourth hole. So when lacing the outy drive side, you place a spoke every fourth hole on the rim, with three holes in between.

Build a Bicycle Wheel: Spoke Cutting with Hozan Spoke Threader
thebiketube.com For the 32 hole rear wheel you will need 18 spokes of a certain size for the drive side and 18 spokes of a certain size for the non-drive side. To get these spokes you can either purchase spoke blanks, or cut them and thread them yourself with the Hozan Spoke Threading Machine. In this video we'll demonstrate how to do that using 310mm spoke blanks. After setting up the Hozan and marking your spokes, all you need to do is clamp your spoke into the Hozan and start turning the lever. The Hozan has a "tap" that forces the threads into the spoke in a process similar to cold forging. This is better than actually removing material, which would weaken the spokes. As you thread the spoke into the Hozan, it will follow the existing threads on the spoke, you will feel more resistance while turning the Hozan as it starts to create new threads. Make sure to calculate the distance you need to thread the spoke, because you do not want to add any more threads than you need. In the video we needed to thread on another 11mm, and then cut off some of the spoke. After you hit your thread mark, back the spoke out of the machine. The next step is to cut off the excess spoke material. First thread on a nipple. This will straighten out the threads when you remove it after cutting the spoke. Make sure it is a brass nipple and not an alloy nipple, because a brass nipple is harder than the spoke material. Thread on the nipple until only the amount of excess you need to cut off is ...
Lunartic Cycle Bike Without Spokes
The aim was to use a hubless wheel to create a compact bicycle, with the benefits of a large wheel and belt drive. Hubless wheels have appeared in bicycle concepts already, and were first invented by Sbarro. However, few concepts have made it to prototype and when only used for aesthetic purposes, the disadvantage of extra cost out weights the visual gain. Lunartic uses the hubless for a reason; to house the working parts, reducing the wheel base but not sacrificing conventional riding geometry. Lunartic is supposed to be as compact as possible without folding or being awkward to ride, however there is the potential for the front wheel to fold up into the rear or for that space to be used for a laptop back, motor or dynamo. This first prototype proves the unique theory behind the design but will require further development before being ready for mass manufacture.

In this first video we will determine the spokes length we need to build the wheel. First select your hub and rim. We selected a 32 hole Mavic Open Pro and a Specialzed S-Works 32 hole hub. The most common method of determining spoke length in the age of the internets is to head to an online spoke calculator. In this tutorial we will be using United Bicycle Institute's (UBI) spoke calculator. (Wouldn't want to be a Divided Bicycle Institute!) In order to deterimine the spoke length the factors you need to know are: 1. Wheel or Tire Size: (Road wheels are typically 700c, Mountain 26") In this case we're building a 700C road wheel. 2. ERD (Effective Rim Diameter): This is either posted on the rim itself, brands like Velocity and others have a sticker on the rim that will tell you the ERD. Most quality rims have this. Unfortunately Mavic does not, but usually its online somewhere. 3. Hub Flange Diameter: This is the measurement of the hub between two holes directly opposite each other on the hub flange. Measure from the middle of the hole to middle of the opposite hole. This is where a caliper can be really helpful. Since we are building a rear wheel, the dish of the wheel becomes a factor. So Buckethead has someone send me some mp3's of his new album without any comment or album art. I am struck by the "Spokes" track and I *instantly* visualize animated Hieronymus Bosch in my head. I scan a few of his paintings in and make a 15 second test animation. A week or so later I drive to Buckethead's secret headquarters and play him the test. He freaks out and takes me into his recording area, right there on the wall is a huge Hieronymus Bosch poster. Buckethead had been imagining the painting coming to life when he wrote the song. This was one of the most effortless things I have ever done, it felt like it was meant to be. The paintings were by Hieronymus Bosh with some additional artwork by Frankenseuss. Photoshop by Scott Halford, Dan Meagher, Gina Festagallo, Cristie Henry and Girafa. Music by Buckethead and Dan Monti.

A really cool opening drum fill to a song called Spokes from Allan Holdsworth's 1989 release Secrets. There are a few other songs Vinnie plays on this album and they are way out there. He has the craziest most inspired ideas you've ever heard. It's been pointed that I missed a hat splash near the end. Also, this whole pattern is played 5 over ever 3 16th notes. ie the "one" beat of the right hand plays starting on beat 2 of 4/4 time signature: TWO e an AH three e AN ah four E an ah ONE e an AH two e AN ah three E an ah FOUR! The last flam is on beat 4. song starts on the following one. If I ever dig up my transcription, I'll post it somewhere.
