This song comes to combat the dulling effects of the statistics of each day and to remind us that the memorial is not for a number but for people each one who is unique.In this light it is understandable why the torah views a census as an abomination and King David was punished for counting the people. However, if this is case why does Gd command Moshe to count the people in our Parsha? Gary Patterson Spiritual States & the Brain: On Thursday's show, world-renowned neurologist Dr. Kevin Nelson discussed his thirty years of cutting-edge research in the field of near-death experience (NDE), and how spirituality is experienced in the brain. "In many ways, near-death experience is the dominant spiritual experience of our time, it's how we touch what we consider to be divine," he said. Yet, with his focus on brain function, he suggested that the concept of life-after-death is a non-science issue that relates more to an individual's faith. Interestingly, he reported that by stimulating a region of the temporal parietal area of the brain with an electrical current, and out-of-body experience can be produced at the flip of a switch. He outlined some of the "borderlands of consciousness," states that fall between consciousness and unconsciousness, when the brain is not getting enough blood flow. For instance, when a person faints or goes into cardiac arrest, sometimes their eyes remain open, and they are seeing and hearing what is going on, even if they can't communicate. In today's morning satsang, Paramahamsa Nithyananda (Swamiji) takes inquiries from Inner Awakening participants. One attendee asks how best to inspire others to receive Paramahamsa's teachings. Paramahamsa replies that when we offer ourselves in compassion and desire to help others, those who are interested will just catch fire. A second attendee asks for explanation of "inner space" and wants to know when she will experience inner silence. Paramahamsa answers that when we close our eyes, what we feel as "me" is our inner space; and that silence can be experienced whenever we truly wish it. The final questioner wants to know whether greed is a danger on the spiritual path. Paramahamsa replies that if greed motivates us to progress on our path, doing required practice and exercise, then it is useful. Otherwise it is just negative selfishness.

'Cosmos and History' Mircea Eliade, a leading scholar of religions during the twentieth century, contrasted two conceptions of time. Cosmic time is circular whereas historical time is progressive. The cosmic conception of time was prevalent in ancient times and reflected the world of nature in which the seasons reoccur each year. Despite being a fascist anti-Semite, Eliade credited Judaism with the conception of historical time. However, as Franz Rosenswieg notes it is more accurate to define Jewish conception of time as being like a spiral staircase-- both circular and progressing upwards. A careful study of the Holidays in Pashat Emor validates this more complex approach.
