We're going to run through the following tests to determine how long it takes to do certain tasks on the iPhone, for the sake of comparing it to other platforms. Make sure you check out Adam Lein's similar video using the Palm Treo 800w. Here are the tasks: - Launching programs: email, contacts, calendar. Because of the iPhone's screen to screen animations, this task took much longer than the Treo 800w, actually, 6 times longer. - Launching Google Maps from the home screen. Because the iPhone's home interface is iconic based, there is no digging for programs as there are on other smartphone platforms. And since you can move the icons to a desired location, you can place your mostly used programs on the first pane. - Launching a Favorite. If you wanted to, you could make an entire home screen pane list all of your favorites because the iPhone lets you save websites to the home area. This makes it super easy and quick to launch favorite websites. - Launching media player and playing a playlist. The home screen button can be programmed under the double click action to start iPod, go to Call Favorites, or go Home. Here I set it to go to the iPod, which made it easy to go to the media player from any program and quickly start a playlist. - Adding a new contact. At times, the Contacts program can become slow and unresponsive. SSD vs 7200RPM HDD - Speed tests
A comparison of a solid state drive and a standard 7200RPM hard drive. The computer on the left has Windows installed to an SSD and the one on the right has it installed to a standard HDD. The difference in Windows start-up time is about 27 seconds to 36 seconds and for starting up Microsoft Word it's about 3 seconds versus 10 seconds. The computer with the solid state drive is noticeably faster with just a clean install of Windows and the trial version of Office on both. Same exact specs on both machines (other than the main drives). Time Warner Cable rigging Internet speed tests?
This video appears to show irrefutable proof that Time Warner Cable in NYC is rigging its internet speed tests to cover up its poor performance. We conducted this test several times before making this video and were able to produce similar results. The test shows three independent speed tests online showing our download speed between 2-6 Mbps, while Time Warner's test mysteriously registers speeds above 25 Mbps. Something's not right. (As a note, day-to-day internet usage confirms that the independent speed tests are farily accurate, as we often have trouble watching YouTube videos, streaming music or staying reliably connected to our office networks.) Context: In early summer 2010 we began subscribing to Time Warner Cable's new wideband internet service, which promised speeds of up to 50Mbps down. We have been consistent disappointed with the service, as it consistently fell well below that mark (as you can see in the video.) We have had Time Warner out for service several times. We have called dozens of times. We have filed complaints with the local Better Business Bureau. Ultimately, we feel like we have no recourse -- there's no viable competitor in the NYC area. Discovering that it now appears that Time Warner is purposefully misleading its customers only serves to rub salt in the wound.

Windows Speed Tests (Vista, XP, 2000 &98)
Unscientific testing of the startup and shutdown times of 4 versions of Windows, done in Virtual PC 2007 under Windows Vista. Screen recording software was not used to free additional system resources. The actual boot times are probably irrelevant, since any operating system will run slower when running in a virtualized environment. Just compare the "ratios" between the times for a slightly more accurate picture of the systems' performance. Apologies for the low quality, as at the time the video was uploaded, Youtube allowed a max video size of 100mb, and the video was heavily compressed. (I was 14 years old at the time this was made, so please excuse the crudity of some parts)

This is Adam Lein with Pocketnow.com. We're going to try some tests I made up to see how easy it is to perform certain tasks with your smartphone. These tests assume you've already learned how to use your phone and are proficient with its functions, so get your phone out and follow along with the video to see how you do. First we'll try accessing programs like email, contacts, & calendar. I'm not going to test making phone calls since you probably know different people than I do, but email, contacts, & calendar programs are pretty standard on smartphones. If you think it will make your results faster, feel free to pre-load your applications into memory. - Launching programs: email, contacts, calendar That was pretty easy. You're probably saying that's not fair because the Treo has 10 customizable application launching shortcuts. Okay, I'll give you that. Let's try launching a 3rd party program that's buried within the interface. Something that doesn't have a shortcut key and is not right there on the Start menu or home screen. How about Google Maps? If you don't already have it installed just visit Google.com/gmm and there's sure to be a version available for your phone. If you're timing yourself, measure from the time you turn on the phone to the activation of Google maps. Start this RCFreehold episode off with CD's Stryker doing a speed flutter. You won't believe how fast it's actually doing this until you see the full speed clip. Next is the Glider we saw recently, where the motor spun off it on power. This time the motor stays on the plane until the 2nd crash, first one spirals in nice and soft. After that a quick look at my Trex 600 E sans canopy right now, after a crash and torque tube upgrade. Need a canopy standoff post. Just kicking up some dust with the ground effect after our field was whored out to the movie industry and they didn't both cleaning up. And finally the two speed tests, CD's Pulse 25e with a Turnigy Motor and 4cell, vs. the Parkzone Habu stock with gear, and the same 40C 4 cell. I'll let you watch to find out their two speeds. Next speed test with the Habu I'll take the gear off too. Thanks for watching, hoping to get more speed tests soon too, the Sundowers, and the TURBINE, P60 powered Bobcat. Should be interesting to see what it's doing, and how high it goes too with the GPS onboard.
