SPECIES : THE AWAKENING
Species 4: The Awakening Movie Review by: Meh We all know that SciFi films are not exactly the top of the bar when it comes to movies, or horror movies for that matter. I am here however to stun you all. As bad as Species 3 was, Species 4 is actually kinda fun. Thats right Species 4: The Awakening actually has some merits. Great special FX, good acting and even the expected low grade shooting styles have been stepped up. This is an MGM SciFi movie not a LionsGate SciFi movie. You can interpret that however you like. The premise of the movie is a young woman discovers she's actually the genetic crossbreed between human and alien. She discovers her loving uncle is in fact the man who made her, and they set off on a cross country trek to Mexico to find out why she is sick. Species is one of those franchises that has gone down the toilet very steeply as of recently and I am happy to say that although #4 is nowhere near as good as the first film was it is night and day better then Species 3. Its action packed, the FX are nicely done and their is a good enough body count to keep you horror hungry horror fans happy. Species 4 has a cast of B actors who do a great job at carrying the story and the level of CHEESE in the plot and characters was kept to a bare minimum making for overall a well put together made for TV sci-fi horror film. I think that folks who like SciFi Network films will love this movie and people who hate them will actually say 'Hey this aint half bad'.

JAGUAR - Species Spotlight
JAGUAR (Panthera Onca) The jaguar is the Americas largest feline predator. This endangered cat (estimated population= +/-10000) has one of the most powerful bites in the animal kingdom which it uses to crush the skull of its prey. The jaguar is often confused with the leopard which lives in Asia and Africa. The black jaguar is very rare. In jaguars, the melanism is dominant and in leopards the color mutation is recessive. Melanism is the occurence of an increased amount of dark pigmentation. Some feel the black coloring of jaguars and leopards seems to take place more when it helps the cat to be dark such as in dense forest and jungles. Threats to this amazing cat include habitat loss and fragmentation of its range. While international trade in jaguars and their parts is illegal, the cat is still regularly killed by humans, particularly in conflicts with ranchers in Central and South America. On February 25, 2009 a regular colored spotted Jaguar (Macho B) was caught, radio-collared and released in southwest Arizona. Sadly, on March 2, 2009, was recaptured and euthanized after he was found to be suffering from kidney failure. Macho B seemed to be the only Jag that was seen in the US in some time. Some feel that the stress from the captures and sedation caused his weak kidney to fail. It is always risky to knock out a big cat. www.euronews.net Scientists are calling it The Sixth Mass Extinction; species are dying off faster than at any time since the dinosaurs disappeared 65 million years ago. It is estimated that around 30000 species become extinct each year. In January, 100 EU researchers and policy experts met at Copenhagen University to discuss this biodiversity crisis. It is thought that previous mass extinctions were due to natural causes: asteroids, volcanic erruptions and climate evolution. The current mass extinction is primarily caused by humans.

The Endangered Species Act is a good example of such a law. In this video, economics professor Don Boudreaux examines the Endangered Species Act, and uses it to explain how policymakers' good intentions sometimes go awry. While the law intends to preserve threatened animals, it actually has the effect of giving landowners strong reasons to kill any endangered species they find on their property. This phenomenon is known as "shoot, shovel, and shut up." Boudreaux implores us not to judge a policy by its intentions, but by its results. We can't assume a policy will be good just because the intentions of the policymakers are good.
