Unemployment on the rise in Spain
More than five million people were unemployed in Spain last year. The country's latest unemployment figures were to be released on Friday. The ratings agency Standard & Poor's announced on Thursday that it had downgraded the country's credit rating. With 38769 people having lost their jobs in February, and the new rating indicating an unlikely loan repayment for the country, trade unions are gravely concerned about an increase in unemployment. Al Jazeera's Sonia Gallego reports from Madrid.
Point Break: 'Spain last nail in Euro-coffin'
Eurozone finance ministers have agreed to boost the EU's rescue fund to 800 billion euros, to help countries like Spain recover from their crippling debt woes. Spain's financial crisis has prompted the government to announce its biggest austerity measures in over three decades. The country's vowed to cut 27 billion euros from its budget this year. It comes after tens of thousands of protesters hit the streets on Thursday, to fight against labor reforms. RT interviews economist and professor at the ICAI School of Engineering Manuel Balmaseda, who insists that the economic disaster that heavily indebted Spain has found itself in is clearly a consequence of Spain joining the euro. Drought hammers Spain, Portugal
www.euronews.com Large parts of Spain and Portugal are desperate for rain, nearing the end of the driest Iberian winter in more than 70 years. Spain got less than 30 percent of its normal precipitation this winter. With both countries in the middle of an economic crisis, many people feel it could not come at a worse time. Thousands of jobs and many millions of euros of agricultural output are threatened by this. Farmers who can are irrigating where rain usually does the job. Farmer José Manuel Allue said: "If it doesn't rain in two to three days, and the weather forecast says it won't, there is no solution for the crops. As there's very little water, we'll see what happens with fruit and vegetables. This latest catastrophe means a lot more people are going to be out of work in the farming sector. We have no idea how we are going to be by the end of the year." In the Mediano reservoir in Huesca, in the northwest of Spain, stored water used to submerge an abandoned church. At the moment, the front steps are dry. One year ago, on average, the country's reservoirs were 80 percent full. Weather expert Ángel Ribera said: "Spain goes through a cycle of drought. What is surprising about this time is how extreme it's been over the last three months. There hasn't been a drop of rain in many parts of Spain. There is usually a bit of precipitation at other times." Portugal is much the same. The government has just approved 90 million euros to help farmers with livestock, a hard move ...

Thousands staged demonstrations against the power of banks and for greater democracy in German cities on Saturday, while several thousand Spanish teachers and parents marched in the capital Madrid to protest against austerity measures. In Berlin the second edition of the so-called 'Occupy Berlin' protest against the financial system drew several hundred demonstrators to a march which ended at the Reichstag building, Germany's parliament, on Saturday afternoon. Protesters chanted slogans against banks as they walked past Berlin landmarks such as the Brandenburg Gate. After the massive turnout at anti-bank protests last weekend, Berlin police were out in force this Saturday but no serious incidents were reported. A similar demonstration was held in Frankfurt, where several thousand people protested against the power of the banks and for greater democracy. The demonstration was organised by 'Occupy Frankfurt' and the international pro-democracy, anti-globalisation movement 'attac'. The participants marched from the centre of Frankfurt to the European Central Bank building, and a rally was held in front of the Deutsche Bank building. Meanwhile in Spain, several thousand teachers marched in Madrid under banners reading: "Our hopes for the future were never so gloomy" and "For sale", referring to cuts in public education that they say will lead to fewer teachers being employed. Frank Lampard nets the winner against World Champions at Wembley. On the day the Lord Mayor's Show took place on the streets of London, it was far from a let down as a hardened and determined display from the Three Lions saw them inflict a rare defeat on a strong Spanish line-up. The match-winner arrived early in the second half, when captain Frank Lampard headed home from close range and whilst the visitors made a valiant effort to get themselves back level, the true English spirit shone through with some characteristic hard work, courage and expert defending. In fact, the rearguard performed admirably for Capello's side throughout and England could claim to have been more than equal to their illustrious opponents for large parts of the match. As expected though, Spain pressed England high up the pitch from the very start which gave the defence plenty to think about, but at the same time also left swathes of room for midfielders Phil Jones and Lampard to break into when the Three Lions won the ball. With man-of-the-match Scott Parker doing a fine job of picking up the pieces in front of the back four, it was often Jones who found himself with space to run into and on one occasion his slide rule pass found Darren Bent narrowly offside in what would have been a promising position ...
