Icehouse - Great Southern Land
When "Great Southern Land" was released as the first single from the Primitive Man album in 1982, a video for it was filmed in a disused sandstone quarry in the Kuringai National Park near Sydney. Then, in 1989, when the song met its first release as a single in North America and Europe, a new clip had to be made to accompany the overseas single. This time, the background Australian landscapes were provided by the Myall Lakes National Park on the mid-north coast of New South Wales. As befits the song, both clips were, of course, typically Australian in content, but the earlier one did feature a few Australian native animals, including a large goanna crawling across barren sandy earth. This latter typical Australian had obviously won many fans, since, when the new clip appeared there were quite a few appeals for "the one with the goanna." The result was that both "Great Southern Land" clips had to be included in the commercial video released in 1989. (www.spellbound-icehouse.org)

Released in 2001 on Housecore Records. Since Phil and Stepanie's divorce the band has disbanded. Also Rebecca Colclough is credited for additional vocals, she is Phils sister. Stephanie has since said that there are many versions of this song and that it was even considered for the Down II record. Also she says that there are around 40 more tracks yet to be released. She wrote this track on her porch and Philip loved it so much he insisted on singing on it.

Albert Hammond (born 18 May 1944, London, England) is a Gibraltarian-British singer, songwriter and music producer. He also wrote songs for others with frequent collaborator Mike Hazlewood. These include "Little Arrows" for Leapy Lee, "Make Me An Island" (1969) and "You're Such a Good Looking Woman" (1970) for Joe Dolan (which Hammond himself re-recorded in 1979, in a Spanish disco-style version), "Gimme Dat Ding" for The Pipkins in 1970 (itself a cover from the Freddie and the Dreamers album, Oliver in the Overworld), "Good Morning Freedom" for Blue Mink, "Freedom Come, Freedom Go" for The Fortunes in 1971 and "The Air That I Breathe" which was a hit for The Hollies in 1974. Tens of thousands of southern Sudanese are returning from the north before south Sudan's referendum on Sunday regarding its plans to separate from the north. The government of south Sudan financed and organized many convoys to bring its people back, the first of which carried over 6000 people. Many of them are seeing their homeland for the first time. Southern Sudanese fled to the north years ago to escape the the south's civil wars. Many of them say they were treated as second-class citizens in the north, and are delighted to go return to the south, even though many face poverty. Al Jazeera's Casey Kauffman went on the road with Marco Toot, a man tasked with bringing thousands of southern sudanese back home to vote.
