Filament Eruption & Earth Directed CME May 13, 2012
A magnetic filament which was in an earth facing position has become unstable and lifted off the solar corona. The resulting eruption produced a Full Halo Coronal Mass Ejection headed earths way. Although its too early to tell but it does appear that the CME will impact the earth sometime May 15. NASA | Massive Solar Flare gets HD Close Up
Take a closer look at the flare that erupted on March 6, 2012. This movie of the March 6, 2012 X5.4 flare was captured by the Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) in the 171 and 131 Angstrom wavelength. One of the most dramatic features is the way the entire surface of the sun seems to ripple with the force of the eruption. This movement comes from something called EIT waves -- because they were first discovered with the Extreme ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (EIT) on the Solar Heliospheric Observatory. Since SDO captures images every 12 seconds, it has been able to map the full evolution of these waves and confirm that they can travel across the full breadth of the sun. The waves move at over a million miles per hour, zipping from one side of the sun to the other in about an hour. The movie shows two distinct waves. The first seems to spread in all directions; the second is narrower, moving toward the southeast. Such waves are associated with, and perhaps trigger, fast coronal mass ejections, so it is likely that each one is connected to one of the two CMEs that erupted on March 6. NASA's Dawn Defines Vesta's Role in Solar System History
During a NASA Television Science briefing, scientists discussed the findings of the first global analysis of the giant asteroid Vesta by NASA's Dawn spacecraft. The Dawn mission has confirmed Vesta's status as a special fossil of the early solar system and revealed a more varied, diverse world than originally thought. Dawn has shown Vesta is the only known intact, layered planetary building block with an iron core surviving from the earliest days of the solar system. It therefore more closely resembles a small planet or Earth's moon, not another asteroid.

An M5 flare and a CME (coronal mass ejection) unleashed a moderate proton storm of radiation and particles into space on May 17, 2012. The particles began smacking SOHO's LASCO C3 imager within 15 minutes of the flare: they appear as white streaks or what we call ?snow?. The CME is the billowing whitish cloud that heads off to the lower right. The next day another CME blossoms out to the left of the Sun. In these images the Sun is represented by a white circle, with the Sun blocked out by the blue occulting disk so that we can observe the faint structures in the corona beyond it. The bright object slowly moving left to right below the Sun is Jupiter. That video covers about 2 days of activity.

Keep your eyes to the skies this weekend—a special solar eclipse is headed our way. The annular eclipse, which has the moon getting directly in the way of our view of the sun on Sunday, is the first of its kind since 1994. But it won't be a total eclipse because the moon is closer to Earth than usual; instead you'll see a ring of fire around the moon. The phenomenon happens twice a year, but is usually only visible by a small fraction of the Earth's surface. This eclipse will be visible in China and Japan on May 21 and for the first time in 18 years by continental western states, California, Nevada, and Arizona, but not the East Coast, where the sun will have already set. Those in the Northeast will have to wait for the total eclipse in 2017. For those who will get a glimpse of the annular eclipse this weekend, though, don't forget mom's advice. If you don't have a solar filter, a pinhole projector, or some special solar-safe viewing glasses, you better refrain from staring—otherwise the next eclipse might be a lot harder to see.

Millions of people across Asia were watching the sky as a rare 'ring of fire' eclipse crossed their skies. A 'ring of fire', or annular eclipse, appears when the Moon is further away and does not prevent all sunlight from getting through. During an annular eclipse, as the Moon aligns with the Sun, it appears as if there is a black hole in the middle of a burning disc -- its name comes from annulus, which means 'ring' in Latin. This time, the eclipse started on Sunday night (GMT) in China and Japan, and over the next four hours will traveled more than 10000 km across the Pacific Ocean and onto the United States. But only those lucky enough to be in the 300-kilometer-wide corridor were be able to observe the eclipse. On average there are about four annular eclipses every five years. However, according to NASA scientists, the feature is actually a little-understood, but frequently observed, type of solar activity called a "prominence," and the way it is situated beneath another solar feature gives it its otherworldy appearance. The thread extending from the lower left edge of the sun in the video is known as a "prominence," a feature containing cooler, denser plasma than the surrounding 3.5-million-degree Fahrenheit corona, said Joseph Gurman, project scientist in the Solar Physics Laboratory at NASA Goddard. This major event measured X 5.4 at 00:24 UTC and triggered a strong R3 Level Radio Blackout. A coronal mass ejection was captured shortly after and is likely to be headed earths way. more information shortly. So far three M-Class flares have been recorded in the last 12 hours. M1.4 at 13:29, M1.3 at 24:04 and an M1.2 at 01:30 this morning.
