The Smithsonian's National Museum of American History

Taken in July 2009. This is a sample of what is inside the museum. I did not get to take pictures of everything due to time constraints, but there is enough here that you get the picture. These are photos of the main entrance with a CP3O from "Star Wars," a lot of first inventions, a Thomas Edison exhibit, a transportation exhibit, Kermit the Frog, Oscar the Grouch, the ruby slippers from Wizard of OZ, and lots of Abraham Lincoln items. Definitely worth a trip to see.

Shanthi, the National Zoo's Musical Elephant, Plays the Harmonica!

When the elephant keepers at the Smithsonian's National Zoo hear the sound of a harmonica, it's not the radio they've left on. Instead, it's the Zoo's 36-year-old Asian elephant, Shanthi, who, unsolicited, has a propensity for coming up with her own ditties using whatever instruments the keepers have provided. These include harmonicas, horns and other noisemakers. The Zoo has captured some of Shanthi's most recent capriccios on this video. The keepers provided the instruments after they noticed that Shanthi, more so than the Zoo's two other elephants, likes to make noise with objects. According to keepers, she will use her trunk to cover anything with a hole in it and blow until it makes a sound—and will often coax the objects to get different types of sounds from it. She taps objects with her trunk and flaps her ears against objects that make noise. Now they give the melodious pachyderm noisemakers as a form of enrichment. Shanthi is the mother of the Zoo's 10-year-old calf, Kandula. Asian elephants are endangered in the wild, where 30000 to 50000 Asian elephants still live in the forests of south and southeast Asia. Visitors to the Zoo can watch an elephant demonstration, which sometimes includes Shanthi's musical skills, at 11 am most days at the Zoo's Elephant Trails.

Contemporary Art Conservation at Smithsonian's Hirshhorn Museum

Latex, chocolate, soap, and video game software are just a few of the non-traditional materials that have inspired contemporary artists. While they embrace the modern, synthetic and technologically advanced world in which we live, some of materials present significant conservation problems for museum conservators. Gwynne Ryan, a conservator at the Smithsonian's Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden discusses the challenges museums face with this issue: Should we keep art locked away to make it last? Or let it be experienced as it was intended while accelerating its natural degradation? For more information about the Hirshhorn's conservation program, visit: hirshhorn.si.edu

Cambodian Cinema from 1960s Highlighted at Smithsonian's Freer Gallery (Cambodia news in Khmer)

A grandson of the late Cambodian film maker, Vann Chan, screened on Sunday a trailer for a documentary about Cambodian cinema in the 1960s and 70s at the Freer Gallery of Art, Smithsonian Institute, in Washington DC. Davy Chou, maker of the new film "Golden Slumbers,'' showed film clips and told the audience about the history of Cambodia's golden age of cinema and of the success of his grandfather's work at Vann Chan Film Production. He spoke about an array of Cambodian screen stars and filmmakers. Davy Chou, whose parents are Cambodian and who grew up in France, hopes to complete the documentary before the end of the year. Chou says he was shocked when he realized how his grandfather's legacy is being forgotten. Nearly all of the film stars from that era were killed by the Khmer Rouge. Many cinemas become karaoke parlors, hotels or were taken over by squatters. And a lady occupying his grandparent's home said to him and his mother "Oh I saw those films but we threw them away!"

Blue Crab Science at the Smithsonian

Nothing says summer along the mid-Atlantic coast like blue crabs, whether it means a lazy day out catching crabs with the family or diving into fresh crab cakes at your favorite restaurant. But blue crabs are more than that...they are an integral part of the Chesapeake Bay's ecosystem and its economy. The long-term research of the blue crab at the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center looks to not only better understand blue crab migration and its role in the Bay, but to have that knowledge translated into sound management policy, so that crabs may continue to play their important role in our environment and in our economy

A History of Pop-up and Movable Books: 700 Years of Paper Engineering

Ellen GK Rubin discovered pop-up and movable books when she began reading them to her sons over 25 years ago. Today, she has more than 6500 books and thousands of uncataloged movable ephemera. While at Yale Medical School's Physican Associate program in 1987, she attended the Sterling Library's exhibition on the history of movable books. It was there that she learned about the scholarly dimensions of her passion. Ellen now lectures and writes about her books, conducts workshops, and curates exhibitions. In 2000, she co-curated Brooklyn Pops Up! The History and Art of the Movable Book at the Brooklyn Public Library. In 2005, two exhibitions from her collection were mounted. The first was at the Bienes Museum in Ft. Lauderdale, FL of the work of Vojtěch Kubašta, the Czech artist and paper engineer. Its catalog, with a pop-up, won an ARLIS award. The second was the exhibition, Ideas in Motion: The History and Art of the Movable Book held at the Sojourner Truth Library at SUNY-New Paltz. In 2004, Pitspopany Press published Ellen's The Hanukkah Puzzle Book: A Book in Eight Parts for Eight Days of Fun! Ms. Rubin has appeared on The Martha Stewart Show, CBS Sunday Morning, and Japanese Public TV presenting the history of pop-up books from her collection. She is a charter member of the Movable Book Society and writes for their newsletter and is a member of the Grolier Club. Ellen hosts her website, The Pop-Up Lady. to disseminate information on the subject.
