"It's Your Story" - National Museum of American Jewish History

The new National Museum of American Jewish History (www.nmajh.org), opening in November 2010, is dedicated to telling the still-unfolding story of Jews in America, who embraced freedom with its choices and challenges as they shaped and were shaped by our nation. The Museum envisions its new home as a place that welcomes all people, inviting them to discover what they have in common with the Jewish experience in America, as well as to explore the features that make this history distinctive. Rising five stories above Independence Mall, in the heart of historic Philadelphia, the National Museum of American Jewish History will join Independence Hall, the National Constitution Center, the Liberty Bell and other landmarks at the hallowed site of America's birth. There could not be a more fitting place for a museum that will explore the promise and challenges of liberty through the lends of the American Jewish experience.

The 50th Anniversary of the Freedom Rides: National Youth Summit

From May until November 1961, more than 400 diverse and committed Americans rode south together on buses and trains, putting their bodies and freedom on the line to challenge the Jim Crow laws that enforced racial injustice and inequality in public transportation. These Freedom Rides changed the Civil Rights movement and demonstrated the power of individual action to change the nation. Today, middle and high school students across the country join together electronically for a National Youth Summit on the Freedom Rides and activism. Freedom Rides veterans Congressman John Lewis (D-GA), Diane Nash, Jim Zwerg, and Reverend James Lawson share how they became involved in the Freedom Rides and how their lives were affected by them. They join filmmaker Stanley Nelson (Freedom Riders) and scholar Raymond Arsenault to discuss the meaning of the Freedom Rides and the role of young people in shaping America's past and future. Students are encouraged to participate in the discussion through email (nmahweb@si.edu), Facebook, Twitter, and the conference portal, and are asked to think about themselves as makers of history. Presented by the National Museum of American History, the National Museum of African American History and Culture, and the National Endowment for the Humanities, in collaboration with Smithsonian Affiliations and American Experience/WGBH. Additional support generously provided by Booz Allen Hamilton.

Conner Prairie Interactive History Park - Ball State Video (Spring 2012)

Conner Prairie Interactive History Park truly has something for everyone. As Indiana's only member of the Smithsonian Institution Affiliations Program, you know you're getting a fun (and educational) experience at Conner Prairie. Located just 25 minutes north of downtown Indianapolis, Conner Prairie features an indoor museum as well as extensive outdoor exhibits. From Civil War reenactments hosted throughout the year to their new (2011) 1863 Civil War Journey section, to the Lenape Indian Camp, everyone can find something fun do do at Conner Prairie. Kids will love the ability to interact with (and pet) young animals in the Animal Encounters section of the Park. If your kids are a bit older, they'll enjoy seeing a real blacksmith crafting all the tools used at Conner Prairie. Each summer, Conner Prairie hosts the Indianapolis Symphony for a series of concerts - the Marsh Symphony on the Prairie (2012 schedule here - www.connerprairie.org and in the fall, the Apple Store opens up and sells everything apple-related - fritters, carmel apples and much more. While you're at Conner Prairie be sure to check out the 1859 Balloon Voyage which sends you on a tethered "hot air balloon" ride 350 feet above Conner Prairie. On clear days you can see downtown Indianapolis and miles in every direction. Check out another video about Hamilton County here: youtu.be

Decision Making Under NAGPRA

This video will explain what evidence is used to determine cultural affiliation by a museum or federal agency under NAGPRA, discuss how a decision is reached, and review what occurs when there is a dispute over a finding. Federal agencies and museums must comply with NAGPRA if they have possession or control over native American human remains, funerary objects, sacred objects, and objects of cultural patrimony. For purposes of NAGPRA, federal agencies do not include the Smithsonian Institution. Museums under NAGPRA are any institution or State or local government agency (including any institution of higher learning) that receives Federal funds and has possession of, or control over, Native American cultural items.

Closed minded, fellow scientists refused to respond if he spoke to them and wouldn't even greet him in hallways. Why? Because he allowed an article, approved by a panel of scientists, to be published which promoted intelligent design rather than the religion of Darwinism. He didn't write the article. Derrick Gardner: Jazz Is Intoxicating with Steve Kuhn - Live at Jazz in July UMass

Jazz in July UMass Faculty Concert, July 20, 2011 featured trumpeter Derrick Gardner, pianist Steve Kuhn, bassist Avery Sharpe and drummer Steve Johns. Jazz trumpeter, Derrick Gardner, inspired by the finest hard-blowing funky bop bands of the 1960‟s, is working to extend that great tradition as a composer, arranger, performer, leader and educator. With extraordinary, creative natural talent, Derrick quickly made his mark upon arriving on the New York jazz scene in 1991. There he began a top-flight career that has taken him around the world performing internationally with the Count Basie Orchestra, (1991-present), Frank Foster‟s Loud Minority Band, Harry Connick Jr.‟s Big Band, The Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra and Swiss tenor player Roman Schwaller‟s European Sextet. Among his performance locales are Europe, Scandinavia, Russia, Japan, South Africa and Thailand as well as many premiere venues in the United States. Over the last 18 years Derrick has worked with a tremendous litany of artists that include late Dizzy Gillespie, George Benson, Frank Foster, Jon Faddis, Nancy Wilson, Tony Bennett, Joe Williams, Rufus Reid and Clark Terry just to name a few. Mr. Gardner formed his own sextet, The Jazz Prophets, in 1991; it continues to be the primary vehicle of his distinctive, hard-driving music. The band‟s three-man horn line, consisting of himself, tenor sax player Rob Dixon and Derrick‟s brother, trombonist Vincent Gardner of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, has ...
