Africa's Largest Slum: Kibera
Kibera is located in Nairobi, Kenya. Kibera is known as an illegal settlement, and is therefore not included in Nairobi's public services. Over 1 million people are not receiving the healthcare, schools, city cleanup, adequate restrooms, etc., because they are part of an "illegal settlement." People in Kibera live in 12ftx12ft homes. These homes house up to 8 people or more. At any one time, 50% of all women 16-25 years old living in Kibera are pregnant. Most of these pregnancies are unwanted, resulting in abortions, but not in clinics of course. Brazil struggles to secure slums
In preparation for the 2014 World Cup, Brazilian police have been working hard to cut crime. Their target has been the gangs that run the shantytowns. Al Jazeera's Gabriel Elizondo reports from the Rio de Janeiro slum Complexo do Alemao, where the police have reclaimed control. About 1700 soldiers and 150 police now patrol the slum, but drug trafficking is still continuing.

What is a Slum?
Slums are defined as a heavily populated urban informal settlement characterized by inadequate water supply, squalid sanitation, non-existence of waste disposal arrangements, insecurity of health and educational services, dilapidated habitation, and insecurity of tenure -- many of these, if not all, violations of basic citizens' as well as human rights outlined by the UDHR Today, 1.5 billion people today live in these conditions denied their basic human rights. In fact in Nairobi, Kenya, 75% of the entire city lives in slums. This is not just a problem. It is a human rights crisis that needs to be exposed. The Supply exists to expose these injustices and to help communities fight them through education and empowerment Our mission is to build secondary schools in these slums and implement a human rights based education so that these children can not only know their rights but also fight for them. But in Portugal, the poverty-stricken area of Cova da Moura, which sits on the edge of Lisbon, the country's capital, people live destitute lives. Since the 1970s, the area has become home to some 6000 people. But now big real estate developers are planning to send bulldozers into the Cova da Moura to tear down many homes and replace them with new buildings - against the residents' will.
