With a population of just 2 million it is one of Europe's smallest nations covering an area of less than 21000 square km's. Bordered by Austria, Italy, Hungary, Croatia and the Adriatic sea, Slovenia contains a diverse countryside with mountains, vineyards, lakes and it's own stretch of Adriatic coastline. Interview with Eva Boto from Slovenia
Powered by www.eurovision.tv Eva Boto is just 16 years old, but managed to ward off competition from 31 other acts to secure her place as Slovenia's entrant in Baku with the powerful Verjamem. Eva Boto was born on December 1st, 1995. She lives in the small town of Šentjanž pri Dravogradu which lies in the North Eastern part of Slovenia, 120 kilometres from the capital Ljubljana. She is now a second-year student attending the Ravne na Koroškem High School, but she is already thinking about continuing her studies in Graz, Austria, or London where she would like to study soloist singing. She has been singing since a very early age and practices daily in her specially designed music room at her home. At 10 years of age, Eva entered an international singing competition in Austria and won. Later, she performed several times at the FENS Youth Musical Festival, where she was twice the winner. Eva Boto was only 15, when she applied to audition for the Mission Eurovision contest. The national broadcaster RTVSLO produced this series of programmes, which started on October 2nd, 2011 and ended this February, with only one goal in mind, to choose the singer who would represent Slovenia at the Eurovision Song Contest. Convincing renditions of songs from Mariah Carey, Shaina Twain, Irene Cara, Leona Lewis and Darja Švajger made a huge impression on the members of the jury and audiences alike. Massive Slovenian dust storm and dust devils!!
Slovenian storm chaser Marko Korosec chased the intense dust storms in western Slovenia in early February this year. After quite a mild winter, the pattern became more progressive and brought extreme polar airmass into large parts of Europe. Numerous countries experienced record breaking snow storms, while Adriatic coast and west Slovenia faced extreme hurricane force Bora winds. Wind gusts were often reaching 150-200 km/h which has never happened before. Usually such events occur once per 1-3 years, while recently there were 4 of such extreme Bora events in a 10 day period--certainly a historic winter! With combinations of very low temperatures, windchills were often well below -30 degrees C. Marko chased all of those events, where the most intense was the last one, causing major dust storms including dust devils/vortices as can be seen in the video. These dust storms resulted in major agriculture/property damage at the end. Numerous buildings and roofs were severely damaged, the arable fields have lost all the land for crops. Thankfully no one was hurt.

Kranjska or Krainer? Slovenia, Austria go to war over sausage

Slovenia has applied to the EU's European Commission for official recognition and protected status for the Kranjska klobasa, or "Krainer Wurst", a sausage it claims for its own. Complicating the claim is the fact that Slovenia was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire at the time. Should the EU side with Slovenia then Austria would be forced to change the name, much to the chagrin of kaesekrainer lovers in Vienna. The two countries have six months to come to a settlement in their battle over the pork-filled delicacies. Should they fail to do so then the EU Commission will be forced to make a ruling.

Last year the country's voting population rejected a bill to raise the retirement age, dealing a blow to the government's plans to control public debt. The country's actual retirement age is one of the lowest in Europe. But the new centre-left party headed by Zoran Jankovic, who won a surprise victory in December's snap elections, plans to enact a pension reform that would raise the retirement age to 65.

Thunderstorm time-lapse video from Slovenia!
Storm chaser Marko Korosec recorded a time-lapse movie of explosive, deep convection on September 12th, 2011. Marko says this was a very rare event for so late in the season in Slovenia. Very rich boundary layer moisture and cold mid levels created a great environment for explosive convection in SW Slovenia; wind field/shear was very low, so pulsating multi-cell storms were occurring throughout the day!
