Skunk kits are able to spray from birth, but the resulting chemical plume is not nearly as strong as that of an adult. Our beautiful baby skunk
We raised a litter of baby skunks in the summer of 2009. Nine skunks in all. Goober however was almost dead when we got him and nursed him back to health. He used the cat door to go outside and loved to play with toys and feet. He eventually joined his wild brothers and sisters and left for the wild three months ago. I imagine everyday that he is now happy and healthy and living free and wild like he was supposed to. We were so lucky to have him in our lives. I will miss him and I hope he decides to visit in the spring. I will always love Goober!

Dog Meets Skunk
I was following a wild baby skunk around filming it when my dog got in the way. Suzie is a rodent killer by nature. She's killed many chipmunks, rats, squirrels, moles, and even a quail in the 11 years I've had her. She lives to hunt! But as you can see, she net her match with this little critter.
Baby skunk leg wiggle
This baby skunk is one of a litter of three, and is now about three and a half weeks old. He has just been fed and is enjoying some grooming from "mom" (who has had her pre-exposure rabies shots. Never handle wild animals unless you have been trained - even if they are adorable). Physical touch is beneficial when the babies are very young, but since this skunk will be released into the wild when he is older, it will soon be "hands off" so that he doesn't become too tame or friendly towards people.

mdc.mo.gov Pioneers called this small black and white animal a polecat, but North American Indians gave it the name we use today skunk. The skunk's reputation precedes it, and so can its smell. Though the skunk itself is a clean animal with little body odor, it is able to produce an incredibly foul scent that is long lasting and distinct. The scent producing glands are under the skunk's tail, and by using muscle control, the skunk can accurately shoot its oil based musk up to ten feet. There are two species of skunks in Missouri, the more familiar striped skunk and the lesser known spotted skunk.

baby skunks playing. These were found so they were not pets. I had them for a short time only. They did not spray when they were that small. If you find orphaned skunks (and you really need to be SURE they are orphaned) you need to find a licensed rehabilitator.
