Simulation of Evolution by Natural Selection
Response to the argument that this simulation proves ID: Isn't this simulation intelligently designed? Yes, but so is any simulation of anything. A simulation requires an understanding of the physical laws involved. ID proposes that physical laws aren't sufficient to generate the complexity of life. So the argument that this simulation proves ID seems to boil down to this: A simulation of physical laws generating complexity proves that those physical laws cannot generate complexity. Please consider the absurdity of that argument before responding. ---- This video shows results from a research project involving simulated Darwinian evolutions of virtual block creatures. A population of several hundred creatures is created within a supercomputer, and each creature is tested for their ability to perform a given task, such the ability to swim in a simulated water environment. Those that are most successful survive, and their virtual genes containing coded instructions for their growth, are copied, combined, and mutated to make offspring for a new population. The new creatures are again tested, and some may be improvements on their parents. As this cycle of variation and selection continues, creatures with more and more successful behaviors can emerge. The creatures shown are results from many independent simulations in which they were selected for swimming, walking, jumping, following, and competing for control of a green cube. Simulated process screen printing separations w/ spot process Part 1 of 2
So separating colors for simulated process screen printing can be a difficult task at best. And you often need years of experience to get it right when doing it manually in a program like Photoshop. Here's a video that explains how to separate colors for printing in photoshop and also shows you what the software Spot Process does. Hope you find it helpful :-) Part1
Evolution IS a Blind Watchmaker
READ THIS In this video I deconstruct the broken watch straw man argument used by creationist / ID supporters to attack evolution. I had to pack a ton of information into this video so you WILL need to pause it periodically. The basic premise of the argument is that a bunch of parts will never randomly assemble into the correct arrangement to form a properly functioning complex. Once again, creationists / ID supporters miss the basic concept of evolution entirely. No biologists believes, nor is there any evidence that complex systems form spontaneously in one fell swoop. That would be creation. Systems evolve through many intermediates, one step at a time, slowly building up the complexity. Here I deconstruct their straw man argument. Basically, I simulate clocks as living organisms. Selective pressure is focused on their ability to accurately tell time. NO goal is imposed on the design (you can tell this because every simulation ends with a differently constructed clock). And it works. Clocks evolve through a series of transitional forms: Pendulum, Proto-clock, 1-handed Clock, 2-handed Clock, 3-handed Clock, and 4-handed Clock. Gradually the complexity is built up. These labels I have assigned to the transitional forms have nothing to do with the simulation itself. They are names I assigned so that we could analyze what the population was doing. The clocks are just clocks, living in their world, trying to tell time as accurately as possible. One thing I wanted to address ...
Precomputed Wave Simulation for Real-time Sound Propagation of Dynamic Sources in Complex Scenes
We present a method for real-time sound propagation that captures all wave effects, including diffraction and reverberation, for multiple moving sources and a moving listener in a complex, static 3D scene. It performs an offline numerical simulation over the scene and then applies a novel technique to extract and compactly encode the perceptually salient information in the resulting acoustic responses. Each response is automatically broken into two phases: early reflections (ER) and late reverberation (LR), via a threshold on the temporal density of arriving wavefronts. The LR is simulated and stored in the frequency domain, once per room in the scene. The ER accounts for more detailed spatial variation, by recording a set of peak delays/amplitudes in the time domain and a residual frequency response sampled in octave frequency bands, at each source/receiver point pair in a 5D grid. An efficient run-time uses this precomputed representation to perform binaural sound rendering based on frequency-domain convolution. Our system demonstrates realistic, wave-based acoustic effects in real time, including diffraction low-passing behind obstructions, sound focusing, hollow reverberation in empty rooms, sound diffusion in fully-furnished rooms, and realistic late reverberation [Nikunj Raghuvanshi, John Snyder, Ravish Mehra, Ming C. 6.8 Magnitude Earthquake Simulated by Underground Nuclear Explosion!
This guy has a better write up on it than me, but mine is a newer upload so it's a little higher in quality. www.youtube.com Cannikin (5 Megaton Nuclear Device Amchitka, Alaska). Excerpt from "Atomic Journeys: Welcome to Ground Zero". Mind you, the footage is directly above the epicenter, whereas the epicenter of most earthquakes (like the one in Japan) are like a mile or more below the ground and a few miles off-shore. (Don't quote me on that, though). I don't recall how deep this one was buried, but I think 1-2 miles is about right. (Don't quote me on that either!). (Formerly: "Best Explosion Ever!! Underground Nuclear Explosion! Amazing Upheaval!")
Value at Risk (VaR): Historical simulation for portfolio
This example is a portfolio of three stocks: GOOG, YHOO, and MSFT. Process is: 1. I calculated for each stock the historical series of daily periodic returns (bottom left, below). 2. For each historical day (eg, Friday 7/18), I calculate the portfolio gain/loss as if I held the current portfolio on that day. This is the essence of the idea: run historical returns through the current portfolio allocation. 3. This produces an historical series (right column, green) of simulated portfolio returns. Now I can treat as with the single-asset; eg, if I want 95% VaR, then I need = PERCENTILE(range, 5%)

Voronoi Fracture and Shatter Lab Tests - Blender & Bullet Physics
Series of simple voronoi fracture and shatter tests created using Phymec Tools. Scenes were all setup quickly, simulated in real-time, and rendered overnight. Didn't bother much with details or texturing. Rigid body / shard count kept reasonably low for these simple tests. These are primarily intended to be simple illustrative examples for some of the uses for voronoi fracture and shatter tools. The only real issue I've faced creating these is that I wasn't able to reliably retrieve from BGE the correct pre- and post-collision (immediately before and after) linear and angular velocities of rigid bodies involved in collisions in order to accurately calculate the post-collision velocities. For more information and link to my open source voronoi fracture and shatter code for Bullet Physics see my previous real-time video demonstrations for voronoi fracture and shatter tools use: www.youtube.com All scenes rendered using the 100% OpenCL (xPU) accelerated SmallLuxGPU v2 (PathGPU2) render engine in SLG Live! mode, typically @ 20 secs/HD frame, no delay between frames. Only de-noise in post. Glass on ground flicker rendering issue is likely simply due to coincident surfaces; unfortunately I didn't notice until after it rendered, sorry. Simulating a Lenz2 Turbine with OpenFOAM
This video shows some output I generated when I simulated a Lenz2 turbine with the turbDyMFoam simulator of OpenFOAM. The partial revolution took about 20 hours for a 64 bit computer to calculate. Besides doing pictures and diagrams, the software can also calculate torques and forces so you can measure the power output of the simulated turbine. I still have much to learn about the use of this program. The wind in the simulation is 15MPH (6.7 m/s) in the +X direction. The turbine is moving with a TSR of 0.8. OpenFOAM is a free program, but its intended to run on Linux and is extremely complicated. I'm an Engineer and normally good with computers and it took a month of my free time to figure out how to install and use this program.

JAA PPL Simulated Engine Failure & Circuits out of Panshanger (EGLG)
Took another friend up with me on today's flight - apologies for the shoddy camera work for the first few minutes! Today did 9 circuits, active runway was 11 on the left hand circuit. Also on several of the take offs practised a simulated engine failure on take off. Close to being "pick a field any field"! Aircraft for this morning was G-BUIK - a Piper Warrior PA-28-161. Used to flying Piper Archer's PA-28-181's. It handled differently and was much more sluggish than I expected. Definitely back to the Archer's next time around.
