The Isley Brothers Shout
Like its parallel series R&B Spotlight, Soul Breakout 59 continues its story (started last year) of rounding off the hits and displaying the development of soul music in the US charts from the chosen year. 1959 was a big year for the development of Soul Music with artists such as Sam Cooke and Jackie Wilson doing a great deal to pioneer the sound whilst musicians like Ray Charles took it upon themselves to develop the form merging fifties R&B with gospel-powered vocals. These artists and more are featured on this new compilation which also has authored notes by the respected Record Collector journalist Mike Atherton. LINK: tinyurl.com First formed in the early '50s, the Isley Brothers enjoyed one of the longest, most influential, and most diverse careers in the pantheon of popular music -- over the course of nearly a half century of performing, the group's distinguished history spanned not only two generations of Isley siblings but also massive cultural shifts which heralded their music's transformation from gritty R&B to Motown soul to blistering funk. The first generation of Isley siblings was born and raised in Cincinnati, OH, where they were encouraged to begin a singing career by their father, himself a professional vocalist, and their mother, a church pianist who provided musical accompaniment at their early performances. Initially a gospel quartet, the group was comprised of Ronald, Rudolph, O'Kelly, and Vernon Isley; after Vernon's 1955 death in a bicycling accident, tenor Ronald was tapped as the remaining trio's lead vocalist. In 1957, the brothers went to New York City to record a string of failed doo wop singles; while performing a spirited reading of the song "Lonely Teardrops" in Washington, DC, two years later, they interjected the line "You know you make me want to shout," which inspired frenzied audience feedback. Lulu Kennedy-Cairns, OBE (born Marie McDonald McLaughlin Lawrie, 3 November 1948, Lennoxtown, East Dunbartonshire, which was then in Stirlingshire), best known by her stage name Lulu, is a Scottish singer, actress, and television personality who has been successful in the entertainment business from the 1960s through to the present day. She is famous for the title song from the James Bond film The Man with the Golden Gun, in North America for the film theme "To Sir, with Love" and in the UK for her first hit "Shout" and her Eurovision Song Contest winning entry "Boom Bang-a-Bang". Lulu grew up in Dennistoun, Glasgow, where she attended Thomson Street Primary School and Onslow Drive Junior School. She lived in Gallowgate for a while before moving to Garfield Street. At the age of 12 or 13 she and her manager approached a band called the Bellrocks seeking stage experience as a singer. Bahrain: Shouting in the Dark
February 2011, and the Arab Spring is in full swing. International TV cameras are lapping up events in Cairo and Tunis, celebrating the overthrow of one despotic regime after another. But out of sight, in Bahrain, another uprising is underway. Foreign journalists are banned from this island kingdom, but unknown to the ruling Khalifa family, one undercover crew were capturing the horrific carnage of a revolution forgotten by the world. Out of the night the police swarm around the protestors, unleashing hell. Inside the Salmaniyya Hospital, the victims scream and writhe in agony. Doctors fight desperately to save lives, but for some the scene is too much to bear. "We call for help here in Bahrain: we call on the US, EU, all Arab countries. It's chaos here. It's unbelievable..." one doctor pleads to the camera. Defying a government injunction in order to treat the huge numbers of wounded protesters, they are accused of "fabricating" accounts of injuries and become the target of cruel oppression. The Bahrainis had enjoyed a brief taste of freedom as they rallied together, making banners and painting murals. The white tower of Pearl Roundabout in the heart of the capital became a symbol of hope. One of my favorites!! ----- This shout, at full power, allows the player to shout a powerful freezing force in front of him/her (AoE about 20 feet). When this force strikes an opponent, it will simply freeze the creature into an "ice statue" form. The enemy will be completely immobilized and will fall on the ground. The effect will last around 20-30 second, depending on the strength of the enemy: where a bandit will be frozen for 30 seconds, a giant will be frosty for 20 seconds. This shout clears all weather and mist. If its raining and you wish to have a beautiful summer sunshine, go ahead and make it so.
