Louis Michel Irigaray - Jeiki, Jeiki (With Irrintzi)
The Basque and the American West, now there's a story. In 1972 Dan Peters, the Director of The Western Idaho State Fair called me and ask for my help in putting together a "Basque Night" during the coming fair. I contacted the Basque Center in Boise and they agreed to participate and asked me to put it together. Long story short Louis Michel Irigaray, The Basque Balladeer became our headliner. Here is cut one from his album "A Shepherd Sings". The album was recorded near that time at the Buck Owens studio in Bakersfield, CA for SH Records. SH Records was Scherry Harrah, the ex of Bill Harrah, the casino mogul. Louis's family is a prominent sheep ranching family in the High Sierra country. Louis had been an actual sheep rancher. On the album credits Louis writes: "My special thanks to John Branstetter, my faithful guitar man & arranger." Other muscian credits appear to be the 1970's version of the Buck Owens Buckaroos: Don Rich, Guitar; Doyle Singer, Bass; Jim Wiggens, Drums & Jim Shaw, Piano & Organ. Incidently, an irrintzi is a high pitched sound of joy or celeration in the Basque culture. The Irrintzi was not in the original recording. I dubbed it in. As an interesting footnote Dan Peters played the newsman in Clint Eastwood's movie Bronco Billy. At the time Dan was the Sports Director at KTVB-TV in Boise.
First Steps in BORDER COLLIE SHEEPDOG TRAINING - Teach a herding stock dog to round up sheep
Info: www.herding-dog-training-border-collie-sheepdog-dvd.com This is a preview of our brand new 2xDVD sheepdog training program First Steps in Border Collie Sheepdog Training - a training DVD for beginners which shows you how you can start to train a dog for farm, trials or ranch working with the absolute minimum help from other people. If you are interested in training a dog to work sheep, a smallholder, potential sheepdog trialler, hobby sheep keeper, smallholder, farmer or even a budding sheep rancher this brand new 2xDVD set, clearly explains the natural instinct of the Border Collie Sheepdog and how (with patience, determination and simple preparation) it can easily be programmed to develop into a really useful working dog. The time honoured (and probably easiest) method of starting a young dog is to use an experienced dog to keep the sheep in the middle of the field. But this method's of no use to beginners who don't have an experienced dog (or access to one), so in First Steps in Border Collie Sheepdog Training the dogs are all trained WITHOUT THE USE OF AN EXPERIENCED DOG.

Bud Purdy - Idaho Ranching and Conservation Pioneer
Among the ranching community, Bud Purdy is considered an Idaho legend. He's been a lifelong cattle and sheep rancher based out of Picabo, Idaho, adjacent to Silver Creek, the blue-ribbon trout stream. Bud Purdy started working on his grandfather's ranch in Picabo in 1928, and settled there for good in 1938. He used to hunt ducks with Ernest Hemingway, and he hung out with a lot of Hollywood celebrities, including Gary Cooper and Jimmy Stewart. But ranching always has been Bud's passion. He and his family have raised beef cattle on the ranch for many years, and they also have struck a careful balance in managing their lands adjacent to Silver Creek. In the 1990s, the Purdy's donated a conservation easement along Silver Creek to The Nature Conservancy. Watch the video to get a glimpse of the full story.

Occasionally, they mistake a pet hiking or biking with their owner as a predator. This television spot was created by the Idaho Rangeland Resource Commission asking you to Care for Idaho's rangelands and Share them respectfully with others.

Livestock's Role in Spreading Weeds and Pinion-Juniper
Retired USDA researcher Steve Monsen explains how overgrazing by cattle and sheep throughout the Great Basin, beginning in the mid-19th century and continuing to the present day, has initiated a cascade of environmental changes that have disrupted vegetational communities and extremified their fire regimes, resulting in the replacement of native vegetation with weeds that are noxious, toxic, or nutritionally deficient for wildlife as well as livestock. An interesting side note: Steve Monsen is a direct descendant of Mormon sheep ranchers who helped settle Utah in the 1850s. Had his rancher father not persuaded him to attend college, he would have continued in the family profession.

150 mile wardrobe: local fiber, real color, Gandhi economy
Except for notions (buttons, zippers, etc), everything in Rebecca Burgess' wardrobe has been grown and designed within 150 miles of her home. But until putting her closet on a diet one year ago, nearly all her clothing was produced far from home, and that made her a very typical American. Over the past half century the US textile industry has been decimated. "In 1965, 95% of the clothing in a typical American's closet was made in America," Burgess writes on her blog, "today less than 5% of our clothes are made here." Upset by the outsourcing of the American wardrobe, as well as the disconnect this by the waste produced by the textile industry worldwide (it's the #1 polluter of fresh water on the planet and America's 5th largest polluting industry), Burgess decided she needed to focus public attention on local fabric, in the same way the food movement had done with local food. Inspired by the success of challenges like the 100 Mile Diet, Burgess decided to put her closet on a diet. For six weeks she wore one outfit (created from local rancher Sally Fox's color-grown cotton that Fox had milled back in 1983 before the area lost all of its mills), but then local designers, in collaboration with local farmers, began creating more hand spun/knitted/dyed pieces until her wardrobe had become so complete she even had a naturally-wicking alpaca raincoat. Rebecca calls her experiment the Fibershed Project, because like a foodshed or watershed, her fibershed- the 150 mile radius of ...
UFO Flies Radio-The Roswell Incident of 47'-Marty Martin Pt. 1
Top Secret Majic, Hour Number One: Jerry first visits with Marty Martin, the author of the radio drama, front row center and then the performance begins. In this first hour we hear about the exact time it happened and reports of a UFO Crash. Sheep Rancher Mack Brazel comes into town the next day to tell the Sheriff about the UFO debris found on the Foster ranch where he worked as the foreman. Brazel is quickly taken to the Roswell Army Air Base for a personal meeting with Col. Blanchard, the commanding officer and Major Jesse Marcel, the unit's intelligence officer. Marcel goes out to the ranch the next morning and is astounded at what he sees. Quickly it is apparent the Army knows more than they have been admitting as another saucer is recovered almost intact, about 60 miles from the ranch. President Truman and US Navy Secretary James Forrestal, a friend of Truman, are quickly brought into the action along with commander of the 8th Army Air Force, General Ramey who proceeds to start the cover up. Playwright Marty Martin was fairly close to the real facts and took some theatrical license with locations of characters and recreated conversations that were probably very close to the real thing. Marty Talks to Jerry about the play- This radio drama featuring residents of Roswell, many of the cast, had family who lived the story when it happened, when Roswell was really a small spot in the New Mexico desert that not many people were even aware existed unless you were involved ...
