Iron And Wine 4AD Session
Iron & Wine, the work of Austin-based Sam Beam, released their fourth album, Kiss Each Other Clean through 4AD in January 2011. Somewhat of a departure from earlier recordings and representing an expansion of the ideas explored on last album The Shepherd's Dog, the record saw Beam's often stripped-back compositions development into ornate arrangements/ Live performances also saw Beam joined by a cast of musicians, helping flesh out his sound. For this beautifully rendered 4AD Session, Beam made the conscious decision to return to his roots. Taking those album tracks back to their nascent form, Beam delivered five acoustic performances that immediately make clear the craft and care that constitutes each Iron & Wine track. Pushed to the fore is Beam's languorous vocals, showcasing the seemingly effortless ease with which he is able to imbibe his music with a nuanced poetry. Filmed at Miloco Recording Studios in Bermondsey, London, the location proved truly fitting of the performance. Beam found himself surrounded by an array of vintage analogue equipment, a perfect compliment to the down-home wood-and twine classic songwriting that has continued to characterize the work of Iron & Wine over the course of four albums. Playing four songs from the new album, long time fans will also note the inclusion of the 'Upwards Over The Mountain', a track drawn from the band's much-loved back catalogue. The session provides a neat precursor to when Iron & Wine return to the UK in October ...

WASHINGTON, March 7—Under question from Sen. Sessions at a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing today, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey indicated that "international permission," rather than Congressional approval, provided a 'legal basis' for military action by the United States.

New Zealand singer-songwriter Kimbra performed a rendition of her song "Settle Down" in the front yard of the Spotify House yesterday, building an elaborate arrangement on her own with the use of samplers and loops. The singer is in for a very busy week at the festival. "I think we're playing like nine showcases," she says. "But that's what the week is all about, just cramming it all in and having a really good experience."

The Big Pink 4AD Session
Ahead of the release of their second album, Future This, The Big Pink have recorded a set of 5 songs as part of the 4AD Sessions series. Bringing to life the anthemic qualities of the new album, the session is a showcase of the unabashed step towards stadium dynamics the band have made on Future This, while also displaying the often-curveball influences that continue to underpin their best work. Filmed in 3 Mills Studios, the location was to have a coincidental resonance with the music. Based on Three Mill Island in Bromley-by-Bow, the island is London's oldest surviving industrial centre with evidence to suggest that the mills it houses were listed in the Domesday Book. The grand historical associations and JG Ballard-esque setting appears fitting of the darkened, industrial undertones that course through even the most pop moments of The Big Pink's music. Channeling the epic, immersive and otherworldy feel of the new album, the stark backdrop of the warehouse-like space was coupled with lasers used in a structural way to frame the band and change the physical surroundings. Playing several tracks from Future This, alongside spiritual cousin 'Velvet', taken from the first album, the session captures what makes The Big Pink such an intriguing band.
