Shit People Say... to Service Dog Handlers
Shit People Say to Service Dog Handlers These are actual things that have been said to a service dog handler on an everyday basis. For more information about Service Dogs and etiquette please go to: sdog.danawheels.net Written by and Starring: Morgan Krug Directed by: Britt Novitch with Special Thanks to Coldon Martin for help with the editing process! Closed-Captioning is, unfortunately, beyond my editing capabilities (I am very new at this) but here is a transcription of the dialogue for those who asked: Are you disabled? What's wrong with you? You can't have dogs in here! You're so lucky, you get to bring your dog everywhere with you... 'woof!' directed at dog Oh, that's a service dog? My cousin's grandfather's great aunt has a service dog. But, they're, you know, actually in a wheelchair. So they really need one. Are you blind? But what if people are scared of dogs? ...Hidden disability? That poor dog having to work like that...how could you do that to her? (whispering aside) Hey, go tell security that girl just brought her dog in here OMG, I like, didn't even recognize you without your service dog next to you. WEIRD. You look like a different person. Are you disabled? You can't have dogs in here unless you're blind. You're not blind...are you? Your dog is so well behaved! Its amazing! Are you like, epileptic? Ma'am, ma'am, you can't have dogs in here. That is so great that you get to train a service dog for some disabled person. That's really noble of you. (clicking ...

Service Dog-Training Program
www.wright.edu During winter quarter, service dog training at Wright State University officially launched with a pilot program, three pups and three students volunteering to foster the dogs during their training. Deemed a success, it continued into the spring term with four new canines and the help of 4 Paws for Ability, an assistance dog placement agency based in Xenia, Ohio. The agency has trained and placed about 600 dogs since 1998. Service dogs are trained best in public places with a wide array of environmental settings, and exposure to many different kinds of people. It's particularly important that the animals are comfortable in school settings for long periods of time, as many will accompany youngsters in the classroom. Agencies like 4 Paws are quickly learning that college campuses fit their training needs perfectly, and schools like Wright State that already feature a robust accessibility culture are an even greater fit. Her role changed to SURFice dog & she started to fundraise for quadriplegic surfer, Patrick Ivison, who she met the night before this video was filmed. The intention was for the two of them to surf a wave together on their own surfboards. At one point, when they surfed into shore, Ricochet jumped off her board, and onto Patrick's. It was her decision to surf tandem with him! Once the video went viral, she turned it into a platform to help more people/animals & she's raised over $53000 in the last year. Eatery that banned service dog closed
CASCADE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) - Don Julio's the Cascade Township restaurant that ordered a man to leave his service dog in the lobby in defiance of state law, is closed and the phone number disconnected. It is unclear at this writing if the closure is permanent or temporary. As Target 8 reported on November 7, Frank Eckl and his family -- including his service dog, Spruce -- went to dinner at Don Julio's. But the manager said the dog had to stay in the lobby. "She [the manager] said we were more than welcome to stay, but patrons in the restaurant and the manager didn't want dog hair in the restaurant," Eckl told Target 8 at that time. "I was shocked that we were asked to have the dog leave and we could stay."

NEADS Service Dog Tina
Video of my service dog Tina for her graduation. I have had her about 6 months now. A major part of Tina's training (about 6 months) was done by guys at the JJ Moran Correctional Facility in RI. Neads works with several facilities in the New England area. This program benefits everyone and is just one of the reasons I chose them over other programs. Another thing that I liked about the program is that they arranged for me to fly from Michigan and stay on the campus for 10 days. A lot of other organizations I looked into gave me the impression that they give you a dog and say "good luck". During the time there I was able to work with her trainer and learn the basic things that Tina can do. The majority of the 10 days was spent training me what to do. For me the best part was going to the prison and meeting her trainers there. Steve, Joey and her other trainers all did such a great job with her. I went with 3 others in my class, a RI news crew filmed the visit: ww.abc6.com Tina was placed with me through a sub program there called Canines for Combat Vets. First and foremost I want to say that I was not injured in combat. I am a t-3 paraplegic (paralyzed from chest down) and receive my health care through th VA. The program is open to veterans like myself and more importantly to those who were injured in combat. I am so grateful to have her and intend to make as many people as I can know about NEADS and the Canine for Combat Vets Program. I have been in the chair for 7 years ...

Service Dog Demonstrates Counterbalance And Momentum Assistance
DeeDee, my greyhound service dog, demonstrates how she performs counterbalance and momentum assistance during a recent outing to a family lake house. The counterbalance was a little hard to show because it was obvious to DeeDee I wasn't falling, lol, and I don't have that task on a command simply because my falls/balance issues are so unpredictable. But she quickly figured out what I was doing, because this is a trained task and she's familiar with the training methods. The momentum assistance was a little easier to show, though the camera angle was a tad difficult to get right, and I got a little out of breath trying to talk while walking. During momentum assistance, DeeDee provides a specific amount of pull on her harness. She is careful to match my speed, and will put more forward pressure on the harness whenever we face a steep incline or hill, then ease off as things level out, as they did in this video. Towards the end, she signaled that she needed to potty, so I ended to video and gave permission. I figured nobody wanted to see that, lol. Both of these tasks (counterbalance and momentum assistance) are a tremendous help to me. Without them, I could not go out alone, and would be limited to very brief outings in a wheelchair with family. My service dog gives me independence and freedom. You can't put a price tag on that. :-)

Do Service Dogs Ever Have Fun?
The burning question for people we meet out in public seems to be, "Does he ever get to just be a dog and have fun?" Well here's your answer everyone!
Training Service Dog Retrieve: Teaching the Hold with Tugging
Check out my "take and give" video which comes before this video. Teaching the 'hold' part of the retrieve involves more than duration. Follow this series of videos with actual training footage to find out what other criteria are involved! As in training the take and hold, any smooth object can be used. It is usually best to start with an unfamilar object, rather than a toy the dog has previous history doing unwanted behaviors with (shaking, chewing, not bringing back etc). We now work on sharing holding the object with the dog so she learns it is the holding, not the carrying of the obecjt that is most important. if you allow the dog to hold the object by herself too soon, you risk her developing bad habits like tossing it is her mouth, dropping it, etc. By having your hand on the object, you can feel if she is engaging in any of these behaviors and also the amount of pressure she is exerting. If she is holding it on her own, you can't always see it happening. Increase duration slowly and look for the singla that tells you they have their 'aha' moment! Usually once you get past 2 seconds, the longer durationas are easier! Use a soft sounding clicker and hold it away from her ears if you can.

Service Dogs in training and a "service dog" at Ikea
Ollie (poodle) and Iris (German shepherd) are almost two years old and visit Ikea. Ollie has been in training for 1 yr 9 months, Iris has been in training for 5-6 months. At 4:50 we run into an unmarked "service dog" at the end of a flexi lead who is in another aisle from the person he is purportedly helping. Note that the person grabbing the leash is not the person being helped! It is the other lady in the lighter sweater who is totally oblivious, and who the dog ignores. The person grabbing the leash said that the service dog is for the lady in the light sweater, and that she is Deaf.
