LINK: tinyurl.com The Sensations, a quartet from Philadelphia, PA, were one of the first groups of the rock and roll era with an all male background and a female lead. The group formed in Philadelphia in 1954, with Yvonne Mills lead, Tommy Wicks tenor, Alphonso Howell bass, and one other forgotten member, and appeared in amateur shows as the Cavaliers. In 1955, the unique makeup of the group caught the attention of Atlantic Records and the Sensations began a three year association with Atlantic's Atco subsidiary. The first two singles by the Sensations were old standards that were given major musical overhaul. In November, 1955 the Sensations first single "Yes Sir, That's My Baby" was released and by February 18, 1956 it had reached #15 on the R&B charts. On November 17, 1955 they appeared at Philadelphia Town Hall with Ray Charles. The follow up to "Ain't She Sweet" was released on April 14, 1956 reaching #13 R&B in May. These were followed by "My Heart Cries For You," "Little Wallflower," "Kiddy Car Love,"and "My Debut To Love." When the Atco contract expired Yvonne retired to marry (Yvonne Baker) and raise a family. From their last album before Eric's first solo venture, this was the first release, too long for traditional AM stations, the radio version was much smaller than the 5-plus minute version I have here. A new line-up couldn't save the band as they broke up a short time later. Enjoy! One of my favorite 70's bands! I saw Eric's solo tour with the Beach Boys exactly 3 months after this album found its way to the cut-out section on the heels of "All By Myself" Eric blew The Beach Boys out of the water!

The Sensations - Born To Love You
This was originally recorded by The Temptations and released on the Temptin' Temptations album in November 1965. The Sensations originally consisted of Jimmy Riley, David Issacs, Harold Dego Davies, Cornell Campbell and Buster Riley and came together on the dawn of Jamaicas Independence in 1962. It was not until David Issacs and Cornell Campbell left the group that the majority of their recording work began. Then Jackie Paris (Drums) Rod Dougie Bryan (Rhythm) and Harold Dego Davies (Bass) brought their talent in music and vocals together. Their rich mature vocal harmonies can be heard on Studio one, Duke Reid, World records Labels and many more, complimenting such artists as Johnny Osborne, Alton Ellis, Leroy Sibbles, Jackie Mitoo as well as their numerous classics such as Born to Love You Those Guys and Baby Love.

The first breakout on the record by The Sensations happened appropriately in their hometown of Philadelphia late in the year. That started a region wide run of popularity in the Northeast and the record hit the R & B charts by late January helping Atlantic set all time sales records for the nine year old R & B record company. In February of 1956 the record by The Sensations was pointed to as a perfect example of "sectional popularity" as "Yes Sir" was a huge hit in some parts of the country (the Northeast) at the same time it was almost unknown in others (the South and Pacific Northwest). By the middle of the following month, Atco readied the group's follow up to their initial hit. Atco # 6067 is released, this time featuring Yvonne Mills on lead on both tunes. Once again both songs were ballads and the 'A' side was again a version of an old pop standard. This time it was "Ain't He Sweet" with Mills on lead and Howell on bass again leading the way. The big difference was in the flip side tune this time with the song "Please Mr. Disc Jockey" which was attuned to the times with the radio dedications as a way of professing love, as a theme. By April Atco saw the light and began supporting the 'B' side as the sales winner. In June of the year The Sensations hit the big time with an appearance at New York City's Apollo Theater with a revue headed by Dr. Jive (Tommy Smalls).

Sensation Headquarters Amsterdam received an amazing email from Kevin Göteborg from Sweden. Kevin is probably Sensations biggest fan. He created the Sensation show The Ocean of White on exact scale with LEGO! Kevins visit to Denmarks first Sensation in the Parken Stadium in November 2008, inspired him to created this incredible masterpiece. It took him 27 very long days, including design, and over 11.000 pieces of LEGO. The whole construction was built in exact scale and is very detailed. Just view the movie yourself. The Sensation team is overwhelmed by Kevins creation and like to thank him by inviting him to the premiere of the new show on the 3rd of July in Amsterdam.
