Seeing Where the Microwaves Are in a Microwave Oven
Microwaves are absorbed by wires creating current in the wires which can drive a neon lamp like this guy en.wikipedia.org I drilled a grid into a piece of plastic and slipped in the bulbs, leaving the wires to hang out like antennas. As the plate turns, the bulbs go into and out of places where the microwave energy is denser, illuminating the bulbs. No, it doesn't seem to hurt the microwave. You can find out more about how to make this by going to kossover.squarespace.com Edits: I do seem to suggest that microwaves are only absorbed* by things that conduct electricity. That's not true, of course. The changing electromagnetic field of the microwaves will oscillate anything that has a charge or is polar. I was trying to point out that microwaves can move electrons in wires. Even slightly salty water does seem to heat faster in my poorly controlled experiments, though. "Absorbed" isn't quite the correct term, I know. Oh, and kids, don't try this at home without your parent's permission. Many things do not like going into a microwave and will catch fire or spark or both. Your parents will be mad, and the fire department will be annoyed as well. UPDATE 25 April 2012: Because many people ask, Gracie is doing well these days. She is getting ready to turn nine and moves a lot slower, but she is still a good dog and a great friend. I'm uploading this for family. This was the day I came back from Kandahar in Sept. 2005. Life has changed since then. But Gracie is still a good dog. UPDATE: (11-13-2009) - This is crazy. I posted this years ago along with three other clips of my wife in Haiti for my parents to see (Jen does medical missions in Haiti and runs a clinic in Cap Haitien). They still have like 400 hits a piece. This clip had like 30000 hits two days ago. I'm not quite sure where this attention is all coming from. Full Moon - Bad seeing - Atmospheric turbulence
This is Full Moon through a Vixen 80mm binoculars, redorded by a Casio digicam. There is a strong turbulence in the atmosphere. It is like watching the Moon from the bottom of a swiming pool. Astronomical seeing is a term used in astronomy to describe the distorting effect of the atmosphere on the images of astronomical objects. The seeing is caused by atmospheric turbulence yielding density variations that distort the optical path traveled by light rays from objects outside the atmosphere. The seeing measured by the best angular resolution possible under given conditions. The best observing conditions are seeing a diameter of 0.4 "arc seconds in high-altitude observatories on Mauna Kea or La Palma, in the low-altitude observatories is usual for the seeing never go down 1" or higher, depending on the local turbulence. The seeing depends strongly on the wavelength used in the observation being greater for shorter wavelengths and smaller and even negligible in long wavelengths (far infrared and radio). Adaptive optics techniques allow imaging in the visible with a resolution higher than the limit imposed by atmospheric seeing, but usually only on visual observations on small fields. Designed by the French astronomer Antoniadi, is also called Antoniadi scale and is between the Roman numerals I to V, using Roman numerals to avoid confusion with other astronomical parameters. America: Dramatic news reporter on CNN. Long Island, New York..... CNN Meteorologist Rob Marciano provided that staple of severe weather coverage: That of the reporter standing out in the elements struggling in high winds and rain. It's intended to be very dramatic, and to be sure Mr. Marciano was being dramatic. "We are in, right, now...the right eye wall, no doubt about that...there you see the surf," he shouts trying to be heard over the wind. "That tells a story right there." "It's been truly remarkable to watch the power of the ocean here." Along the bottom of the screen CNN has emblazoned "Breaking News: Irene Batters Long Island" on its news ticker. But there's something funny to notice when you watch the video: Check out the people in the back ground. People are walking back and forth chatting with one another. One woman is walking backwards, her hands in the air. A guy on a bicycle cruises by. Sure, the weather in the video is cruddy, but one hardly expects to see people out and having fun in the sort of extreme weather the CNN reporter is characterizing. The coverage was intended to give us a sense of the danger of the storm, and yet that danger is not at all clear from the way the people around the reporter are behaving. "Shameless" and "brazen" are the only words I can think of to describe these antics. All the more so in that the reporters and producers and anchors responsible for the coverage lack the self-awareness to realize how silly it all looks ...

I wrote a story of a boy and girl who fall in love, there are no names, no named geographic places- and they have 3 children, and the 1st born son dies in some faraway war... it has 12 songs and this is part of it, that's all. But a young man, from the US Virgin Islands, as the young do..., noted that with all the anger and vitriol on YouTube, he said all he saw was "CAMARADERIE TRANSCENDING NATIONALITIES", and that I see also, so thanks to all you very Human Open Hearts out there, you are to be commended. And especially to the families who have lost their once little boys and girls, husbands, wives, mothers and fathers... And the Soldiers from all over the world who send their respect and love. Neelambari tells Arundhadhi that she likes the Arundhadhi who is like a ferocious cheetah and not the one who is like a cow. Drunken JP gets off from his room, Neelambari meets JP and warns him to behave in a very careful manner with Arundhadhi. Shanmugarajan advises Arundhadhi to make JP accept Arundhadhi as her wife. Shanmugarajan then asks Bhanumathi to help Arundhadhi get her need. Arundhadhi feels afraid. She feels bad after entering JP's room seeing JP. JP after seeing Arundhadhi, tells a poem.
