Creating realistic clothing for SecondLife from start to finish!
CLICK "SHOW MORE" BENEATH THIS TO READ HOW THIS WAS MADE! In this video I'm showing how to create a realistic turtleneck sweater for a SecondLife avatar. Note that the video is timelapsed; what you're seeing here took four hours, not a few minutes! I'm using (in order): - Blender to create the turtleneck, upper- and lower arm sculpties and to bake the shadow maps for the aforementioned sculpties; - DeepPaint3D to texture the sweater with reference photos by www.3d.sk - this is the 'Anastazie' photo reference; -Adobe Photoshop CS4 extended to liquify and resize the reference photos so they will actually "fit" the mesh of the avatar (while working with DeepPaint - I'm exporting / importing the projection paint layers to do that!); also, I'm using Photoshop to create the inital textures from the PSD files that were the resulting output from DeepPaint; - PhotoImpact, to remove the alpha channel on the textures where it's not needed (yes I know; that can be done in Photoshop too; it's just a habit of mine to do it in PhotoImpact ;-) ) and also to create a 'protecitve' alpha channel for the sculpties; - The SecondLife Phoenix Viewer for the final uploading and assembling of the Sweater in SecondLife. Second Life with Shadows on an Android phone
Using Splashtop Remote on a HTC Desire Z (Android 2.3) to control a windows 7 PC running the Dolphin viewer 3, Graphics card ENGTX275. This setup allows the phone to act as if its running SL itself and with shadows and DOF!! On a local wifi it works with small enough lag to be actually above expectations, there's a tiny delay between pressing the keys and the avatar start walking but it's easy to get used to. I'll give it a test from another location soon but if it's the same drop in fps as i had with a remote system running SL through logmein.com it's likely to get too slow for flying. Using Kinect and OpenNI to Embody an Avatar in Second Life
USING MICROSOFT KINECT AND SECOND LIFE TO EMBODY AVATARS: GESTURE & EMOTION TRANSFERENCE We are developing methods of recognizing social gestures in order to explore the transference of emotion and gesture between a virtual world and the real world. Thai Phan, an engineer at the MxR Lab, has developed new software, using the OpenNI toolkit as a foundation, which utilizes Kinect to read gestures and triggers corresponding server-side scripts within Second Life. These methods may allow the user to feel a deeper emotional connection to the social gesture performed by their virtual avatar, regardless of the bond which already exists between the user and his recipient.
