Nylon 6,10

The preparation of nylon 6,10 by an interfacial polycondensation reaction is demonstrated. The monomers are a 6-carbons diamine (hexamethylenediamine) and a 10-carbons diacid dichloride (sebacoyl chloride): the two reagents dissolved in separate phases polymerize at the interface. The rinsed thread of nylon thus obtained is very similar to the raw material prepared on industrial scale.

Production of Nylon-6,10

Production of Nylon-6,10 from a Sebacoyl Chloride/Hexane solution suspended on top of a 1,6-diaminohexane aqueous solution. At the interface of these two mixtures, a polymer (Nylon-6,10) is formed and will continually form when the interface is interrupted or removed. When all of the 1,6-diaminohexane is consumed, production of the nylon stops.

Nylon Polymer Extraction

This solution is of two immiscible liquids. The top liquid is 4.4g of hexamethylenediamine disolved in 50cm3 of water and the bottom liquid is 3.0cm3 of sebacoyl chloride dissolved in 100cm3 of tetrachloroethylene. Nylon-6,11 forms at the interface.
