Liquid Magnet Sculpture

A ferrofluid (from the Latin ferrum, meaning iron) is a liquid which becomes strongly polarised in the presence of a magnetic field. Ferrofluids are composed of nanoscale ferromagnetic particles suspended in a carrier fluid, usually an organic solvent or water. The ferromagnetic nano-particles are coated with a surfactant to prevent their agglomeration (due to van der Waals and magnetic forces). Although the name may suggest otherwise, ferrofluids do not display ferromagnetism, since they do not retain magnetisation in the absence of an externally applied field. In fact, ferrofluids display paramagnetism, and are often referred as being "superparamagnetic" due to their large magnetic susceptibility. True ferromagnetic fluids are difficult to create at present.

The Augmented Sculpture Project

About the project (written by the creator, Pablo Valbuena): "This project is focused on the temporary quality of space, investigating space-time not only as a three dimensional environment, but as space in transformation. For this purpose two layers are produced that explore different aspects of the space-time reality. On the one hand the physical layer, which controls the real space and shapes the volumetric base that serves as support for the next level. The second level is a virtual projected layer that allows controlling the transformation and sequentiality of space-time. The blending of both levels gives the impression of physical geometry suitable of being transformed. The orverlapping produces a three-dimensional space augmented by a transformable layer suitable to be controlled, resulting in the capacity through the installation of altering multiple dimensions of space-time." I did not create this video. If you are the owner and want it removed, please contact me.

Interactive Kinetic Steampunk Sculptures by Marque Cornblatt

For centuries the use of tools by humans has been used as a marker - one of several gauges of that particular quality that define humans as unique and self-aware beings. Over the millennia, the development and use of certain tools has effected the quality of life so profoundly, that one can scarcely imagine life without their use. Language, social structures, medicine, electricity, mass communication. There exists in our culture the promise of technological solutions to every need, problem and issue associated with the human condition, from the basic needs of food and shelter, to more sophisticated requirements of the human animal - fast food, financial credit, internet dating, artificial hearts, and MTV. Attempts to meet these needs with technology comes in a variety of forms - from AT & T providing lengthy and complex exchanges of information without the customer ever speaking with a live operator, to computer controlled medical implants monitoring and performing an increasing number of metabolic and physiological functions in the human body. The conceptual cornerstones of "that which makes humans unique" continue to be challenged and defeated. Internally, in the case of medical advancements, and externally - as demonstrated by the increasing number of "human" interactions which no longer have two humans participating. Identity and self-awareness are no longer the exclusive terrain of human beings. We live in the age of the "transhuman" being.

Thinking Chair - Arthur Ganson

There is a small rock outcropping on a favorite trail in the woods near my studio. I often find myself deep in thought, walking in slow circles around the edge of this stone mound. For me it is a walking meditation, where each cycle finds me back in the same physical place but in a slightly different emotional place. One day I found a loose rock with a flat face and the idea for 'Thinking Chair', a self-portrait of this experience, came into being.

The Book Sculptures of Su Blackwell

"I often work within the realm of fairy-tales and folk-lore. I began making a series of book-sculpture, cutting-out images from old books to create three-dimensional diorama's, and displaying them inside wooden boxes". "For the cut-out illustrations, I tend to lean towards young-girl characters, placing them in haunting, fragile settings, expressing the vulnerability of childhood, while also conveying a sense of childhood anxiety and wonder. There is a quiet melancholy in the work, depicted in the material used, and choice of subtle colour." Paper has been used for communication since its invention; either between humans or in an attempt to communicate with the spirit world. I employ this delicate, accessible medium and use irreversible, destructive processes to reflect on the precariousness of the world we inhabit and the fragility of our life, dreams and ambitions." (Su Blackwell) Music by Budd, 'How vacantly you stare at me'.

Amazing Sculptures

FIND OUT MORE AT : www.rightshighway.com Robert Erskine was born in London. From an early age he displayed an enquiring disproportionate disposition towards all things mechanical. At 4 years of age he successfully locked, without keys, the family's late 50's Kelvinator fridge and aged 6 he started dismantling the family car. He then progressed to using his father's medical instruments, (his father was a doctor and none too pleased), as stone carving tools and a personal turning point took place in 1967, aged13, he was taken to St Paul de Vence, Provence, to visit the Maeght Art Foundation. The exhibition was of paintings by Marc Chagall and a memorial exhibition of sculpture by Giacometti, who had recently died. Enquiring as to the meaning of a huge banner across the road to the museum proclaiming the word 'SCULPTURE', he was told to go inside to see. The exhibition confirmed that what he wanted to do was 'make sculpture'. At high school he had his first exhibition, which consisted of 8 large abstract carved blocks of plaster. After completing high school he studied sculpture at Kingston School of Art and Design, Kingston Polytechnic, gaining a BA(Hons) degree in fine art sculpture, and completed post-graduate studies in sculpture, gaining an MA in fine art sculpture, under Professor Reg Butler at the Slade School of Fine Art, University College, London. Trained in stone carving, ceramics, drawing, metal working, and welding, Robert often works in wrought and welded ...

Kinetic Art - Sculpture in Motion

Kinetic art is art that depends on motion for its effect. The motion can be provided in many ways - through wind, electricity or by relying on a bystander to provide power, such as cranking a handle. Sculpture in Motion is an exhibition of Kinetic art at the Atlanta Botanical gardens that runs through October 31st 2008. 16 of the most prominent kinetic artists are showing 25 different kinetic sculptures that harness the forces of nature. Wind power, solar power, sound waves and even human energy are used to create beautiful movement that changes over time. "Installations were starting to happen in the 60's and 70's when I was beginning and I think that really influenced me", artist Kristina Lucas told us. "I'm not really content to make a little object that just sits there but something that you can immerse yourself in and walk around and be a part of is just more interesting." Susan Pascal Beran told us about the appeal of the unpredictable. "I love wind motion and water motion when it is most random because it gives my sculptures the depth of an ever changing composition and an ever changing dance. It also reflects the flow of the planet. It's like riding a wave - you just have to be there in the moment and I think that's what my sculptures do. They just allow the viewer to release and relax and get outside their stressful little worlds."

Voltron Lion Force Balloon Sculpture by HappyCabbie of YouTube

clicktotweet.com See more balloon sculptures like this one here www.youtube.com Learn how to make balloon figures here www.youtube.com Also be on the look out for my balloon instructional DVD coming in January 2011. This Voltron sculpture is made from over 200 Qualatex balloons and took 30 hours to construct. It stands 6.5 feet tall. It has complete articulation. Its head can rotate 360%, as can its arms. Its legs can swing forward and back. Furthermore the lion heads at the hands and feet can open and close so they can hold weapons. It's wings can swing 360% and can fold in half just like the original toy. Voltron was a cartoon series from the 1980's. It featured 5 robotic lions that could form a super robot. The toy was made from quality plastic and die cast metal. The cartoon series has been rebooted several times and there is plan of a movie in the works. However early sketches of the new movie has a very Michael Bay look to them. I hope public outcry stops this design from coming to reality.
