Bill Nye on Teaching Science Like Comedy
Science education should be arranged so that students have more hands-on experience, says Bill Nye.
Redefining Science Education
Inquiry-based science curricula require that students engage in active investigations coached by a teacher. The purpose is to guide students in the understanding of different scientific topics, which can result in attaining the necessary knowledge and practice of how to think like a scientist. We will examine inquiry-based science education from kindergarten through college -- what it should look like and why we should care. Japanese jr. high radiation education: Science education or brainwashing?
The Japanese Science and Education Ministry (MEXT), is mandating a new curriculum which includes radiation education to be taught at schools across Japan. MEXT doesn't only mandate education standards, they define specific material and teaching techniques in many cases. This video analyzes the new radiation education curriculum. This is the same ministry that is responsible for setting some of the sky-high radiation "safety" standards with regards to the Fukushima disaster. This curriculum is aimed at junior high school and is thus compulsory education that all children in Japan will receive. Japanese junior high school is grades 8-10. Augmented Reality Sandbox with Real-Time Water Flow Simulation
Video of a sandbox equipped with a Kinect 3D camera and a projector to project a real-time colored topographic map with contour lines onto the sand surface. The sandbox lets virtual water flow over the surface using a GPU-based simulation of the Saint-Venant set of shallow water equations. We (the UC Davis WM Keck Center for Active Visualization in the Earth Sciences, www.keckcaves.org) built this for an NSF-funded project on informal science education. These AR sandboxes will be set up as hands-on exhibits in science museums, such as the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) or Lawrence Hall of Science. Science Bulletins: Whales Give Dolphins a Lift
Many species interact in the wild, most often as predator and prey. But recent encounters between humpback whales and bottlenose dolphins reveal a playful side to interspecies interaction. In two different locations in Hawaii, scientists watched as dolphins "rode" the heads of whales: the whales lifted the dolphins up and out of the water, and then the dolphins slid back down. The two species seemed to cooperate in the activity, and neither displayed signs of aggression or distress. Whales and dolphins in Hawaiian waters often interact, but playful social activity such as this is extremely rare between species. The latest Bio Bulletin from the Museum's Science Bulletins program presents the first recorded examples of this type of behavior. Visitors to AMNH may view the video in the Hall of Biodiversity until February 9, 2012. Books are pretty good camouflage! We couldn't motivate kids to come out and watch, so we shot the first rocket for a small group of kids. After hearing the rocket and all their friends screaming and laughing they came running. The principal then instructed me to give an impromptu lesson on what rockets are, and why they are used to the whole school. While I gave the lesson, Stevo taught all the teachers how to reload and fire the rockets. In all, we did three shots and left the materials with the teachers for another day. The science teacher in particular was so excited he couldn't ...
